Help! Does anyone have a metal detector?

Help please! My fiancee has lost her solitaire diamond/platinum engagement ring. She is devastated. As am I. We did some gardening (with a fair bit of digging) yesterday so one possibility is that is has found its way into the soil. We've looked through it today but no luck. I even bought a metal detector (costing £100 from Argos!) but unbelievably although it picks up large metal objects, screws etc when I placed her platinum wedding band (were not married yet, have just had the bands made) on the ground to test it, it didnt even register! Obviously I will be getting a refund but if anyone has a "good" detector (that we could borrow or use the services of the owner) cabable of finding such a ring, could they let me know please...

Try the Herts & District Metal Detecting Society (http://www.hdmds.co.uk/home.html). "We offer the public a free recovery service for lost items such as rings, keys and even farm machinery. Our members are only too pleased to assist with this and any donations they may receive for the service is collected and given to a charity of the committee's choosing at the end of the year. Recent donations have been to Keech Cottage Childrens' Hospice; Hearing Dogs for the Deaf; the Salvation Army and most recently the agricultural workers' charity RABI" They successfully helped my Dad when he lost his wedding ring whilst gardening.

You can hire one from HSS tool hire shop in Welwyn - near the B and Q. I used one for the same purpose, and it worked really well - I found the ring a few inches down in a flower bed.

Thank you both for the replies. Great suggestions, I never would have thought you could hire a detector from HSS. I spoke to HDMDS and a very helpful chap came round this afternoon (for free) and made a thorough search of the garden. Very sadly, no ring found but at least we now feel that this avenue has been thoroughly gone down. It has been reported to the police and now our insurers, but obviously in the unlikely event it was lost elsewhere and anyone comes across an engagement ring...we were in St Josephs church and then Hertford Tesco on Sunday morning and the Riverside garden centre later on that day.
