Fight outside the Hertford House Hotel
Sad to see a rather large fight outside the Hotel last night. Having been out a few times this side of Christmas and not witnessed any trouble I was quite surprised by the size of the crowd involved.
The police had to be helped by a lot of doormen from what looked like a few different venues.
I had hoped most of the trouble makers had gone back to Ware and the new nightclub as there have been a lot of incidents back there since it opened including trouble this Thursday which took three police cars to sort out and apperently someone was also stabbed or slashed last Saturday which hasn't been reported in the Mercury yet.
Lets hope this was a one off as I feel the town has been getting better of late with a better late night atmosphere.

Oh no this will not be one off!! Having lived near Elbert Wurlings for five years this will be the least of the problems. Litter, Noise, anti-social behaviour and fights, it will all become a regular occurance!! And Nick will continue to say there are no problems because he doesn't have to live with it!!

Apparently Elbert Wurlings opened up in the basement of the HHH this weekend hence the message from earthmother above. I think the police ought to have an early visit and remind the owner of his responsibilities and of what happened at the old club sky and zeros. Hertford attracts people as it has a lively nightlife but is also quite safe - I'd like it to stay that way and hope the bars and clubs do their bit to protect that reputation.

It is definately not over 21's if my last visit is anything to go by.
Elberts always did and always will attract a very young crowd and the scenes last weekend prove that. I don't remember seeing an application for Elberts to move to the basement of the hotel, or maybe the premises always had this option.
Shame that the square now has an 18 year olds hang out to contend with [:(]

Fletch - I know where you're coming from but I don't see as its the responsibility of the taxpayer (i.e. police) to keep the club's customers in order. The owners are making a tidy profit from selling the drinks and they have to be accountable - by all means give them a warning but then close them down if they can't control their clientèle.

HHH is a dump IMHO...and has been going down hill ever since it opened..as I have said many a time on this forum...

I cant understand why the licensing justices are so weak. Quite a few years ago when I ran a pub in Hertford, you had a responibility NOT to serve drunk people. If you were found to be continually doing this you could and indeed some did lose their livelyhood. Weak management, and poor enforcement is unfortunately the norm these days, but is no excuse, and in my day we didn't employ bouncers, we just ruled with a rod of iron , and when someone was barred they stayed barred for life.

Hugh I fully agree. Having started my drinking in Hertford in the mid 70s at the tender age of 15 I knew the rules (not the law!) and behaved myself because there were limited places that would serve me and only a few of those were 'good' pubs to be seen in. The landlord was the law and you didn't take liberties or you would be barred.

Mr fixit Woolpack 1974-1984, rock bands Monday, Friday, Saturday, Rock disco Thursday and Sunday and it was all FREE, those were the days and no charge for New Years Eve unlike the modern trend today. We never had fights outside or inside the pub, as people knew the consequences.

What are they doing about the Hotel rooms? I wouldn't be best pleased if I was trying to get some shut eye and all I could hear was a fight kicking off downstairs due to the nightclub in the basement of the hotel!
Seems to me they have made a bit of a mistake.

No fights, but plenty of wheelies down the Wash accompanied by Andersen Shelter belting out rock cliches within. 50% of the clientelle were on the pavement watching the stunt show, beers in hand. The problem many of our landlords face is that a lot of their customers are strangers to each other. They don't care what those around them think and if a large enough group gets involved no amount of security will stop it easily, or without injury.

I think the landlords should accept some blame. Some of my social life is pub based in Hertford and in the last few months I can honestly say I've seen half a dozen instances of bar staff happily serving customers (usually, but not exclusively, regulars) who are too drunk to stand without difficulty. I've seen a licensee who has been known to post on this forum, laughingly serving a woman who was close to passing out.

Rachel that is the very thing I am so opposed to. Weak management who are only concerned about profit and not about their reputation. That guy is a disgrace.
