Live Music Review

I was at the Marquee on Friday night and saw a fab band! thought we could maybe have a Live Music Review Topic? They were called Pearly, originally from Hertford they now live in London. They sounded very much like the Eels or Radiohead, they did not have a big stage presence they just played really good music with intelligent lyrics. Well worth keeping an eye out for lets hope they play in Hertford again! I give them 7 out of 10.[:D]

Not a bad idea, but I want to know what's good coming up rather than what I've missed! For what its worth John Otway is on at the Marquee soon (2 March) and he's really entertaining (Well he was last time I saw him 10 years ago!). Anyone know what the support is like on that night (somebody called Murray Torkidsen) or what the Who's Who tribute band are like (11 March)? BTW the Marquee website is http://www.marqueehertford.co.uk/

Also at the Marquee in the near future are a band who played at the recent Oxfest. I would certainly recommend going to see GrandLux on 12th March.

Sorry Ridley I do not know what Murray Torkildsen are like as I have never seen them either! but hey maybe that is a reason to go and find out! This Friday the Marquee have on Overdrawn supported by In Focus and Hanzo. Then this Saturday the line up is Streetsleeper supported by The Fractures and Indiana (and me as the DJ)[}:)]. As with most unsigned bands you probably do not know these people, neither do I but it is great to go along and discover these bands before everyone else does.

I’ll endorse Ridley's comments about John Otway, I saw him on his last visit to Hertford Marquee Club and again when he was supporting someone I went to see at the 100 Club very recently. He’s always entertaining although one can’t help being concerned that at his age he should think twice about stage diving off a stepladder. According to his website, you can join him on his world tour for £3K! Bargain. Anyway, it’s cool that he’s chosen Hertford to kick off this auspicious tour so I hope he gets a good turn out. We are so lucky to have the Marquee Club. I wish it were better supported. I went last Thursday to see a brilliant evening of cutting edge international art-punk, it was accessible, professional, really entertaining and by the time the headline act came on, I was 50% of the paying audience. I am really pleased that everyone in Hertford has such rich and fulfilling lives that they have better things to do most evenings than go and see live music in a well-run club on their doorstep but for the sake of the sad few like me who really need a good live music venue in the county town, I hope more people can make time to support the Marquee. If you like live music, anything from tribute bands and Skool Disco to ska, rock and electro-punk then please visit the Marquee website and sign up for the mailing list. Hope your set goes well on Saturday, Nicky. [8D]

Thank you Rachel[:)] You might also find it interesting that I have handed over contact details to Kev for Charakka! Big possibility we will get them in Herford again! I went to see them at the Garage last week and was talking to them about it, they said they loved the Hertford crowd and would like to play here more regularly! cool![:o)] I will keep you posted on that one!

Anyone know what Rotating Leslie are like? They're playing the Marquee tomorrow and have apparently been called the best British band since the Libertines - some tribute.

Joby, see http://www.rotatingleslie.co.uk They are local boys, all proceeds tomorrow night go to charity, they are mates with the GLC - gotta be safe as f***. You knows it. Etc. I've seen Broken Mile before (they are also on tomorrow), they are not exactly original but they are competent and professional and the singer is brilliant. Should be a good night.

Gonna try and make it down tonight to see RL. I'm in a state of unwell at the moment but it just wouldn't be rock and roll to stay in.

I'd say that's not a good start if they can't keep their details up to date.....

Yeah, that sounds about right. Several pints of kroneburg and a midnight snowball fight on the mean streets of Bengeo didn't help me, either. Worth it, though - Rotating Leslie were bloody superb.

quote:Originally posted by Drama Queen What's a rotating Leslie..? Its a speaker called a Leslie Revolving cabinet usually connected to a Hammond Organ. The speaker revolves within a large cabinet (the whole thing is like a sideboard on wheels) and provides the unique sound that Hammond organs produce. Put a guitar through it as John Martyn once did and you can get some very weird effects

See a fab band last Saturday night 'Indiana', the vocals were fantastic. Not really what you would call rock or punk, more along you kind of Keane or The Stands. Either way I would recommend looking out for them, I think they said they were from Watford.

Thursday was cool. We really enjoyed it and managed to raise nearly £400. Talking of the marquee I saw a band up there about 5 months ago called 'Killing Moon' and was blown away. They have now changed their name to 'Battle' and are enjoying lots of success (Featured in this months NME). The Marquee is fast making itself a regular place on the gig circut just like The Square in Harlow. So it's all good! Check out http://www.onewaymusic.co.uk
