If you have been watching the BBC and Sky News weather forecast recently you may have noticed that they have been rather inaccurate to say the least. If you want to find out what the weather is like in our region with a more accurate nowcast this is a great place to find out, there is also forecasters on the very busy forum who forecast for the region and up until now they have been spot on they even said that the snow forecast over the weekend would not be quite as severe as the Met office were predicting. Last Wednesday I was reading the weather forum around about 7.45am after hearing that Simon Balle school would open and I read that it was going to snow very heavy in Hertford (because we were in the line of a streamer) for around 2-3 hours I also looked at the latest satellite update here http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ and here http://www.meteox.co.uk/gmapstatic.aspx?zoom=6&type=zoom&x=244&y=222 and I could quite clearly see the Snow heading to Hertford,. I took the decision not to send my children into School because of this and I'm glad I did. If the Headmasters and Headmistress of schools in the area were made aware of this instead of listening and taken decisions from a broader general forecast we would not have to go through all of the inconvenience in going to the schools only to be informed that when we get there the school has taken a decision to close like Miss. Saunders has done on several occasions now. I do find it a little behind the times with heads of schools still listening to a more broader forecast then making decisions on that especially in todays world of ICT at your fingertips. I do hope you will find the 3 counties weather forum useful in the weeks ahead because I think we have plenty more adverse weather to come. They are some experienced local forecasters on the forum aswell as folk who just post updates on the weather from across our region. Here is the Net Weather forum for the Three Counties. http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/60210-3-counties-ea-cold-spell-discussion-part-5/page__st__340 Edit: I forgot to add that all of the forum users love to see the Snow so when they use the word favourable etc. for our region remember to see it as bad news if you don't want it to Snow. Interesting, though to be fair if a headmaster/mistress decided to close/open the the school on their interpretation of one of those sites and ignored the BBCs opinion then they are opening themselves up to a lot of abuse/questions if they get it wrong....!

Frenchie the BBC go with the model projected forecast from the Met. Office taken from the 6 ghz and the 12 ghz run's and not nowcasting as I have provided, when I say nowcasting it's within a 2 hour period normally so this allows plenty of time for a decision to be made. I won't go into the details of it because it may confuse you and others, however the BBC on Tuesday afternoon had issued severe weather warnings for the West of England only, it was not until later that evening that the BBC UPGRADED the warnings for the East while the forecasters on the forum had said the evening before that it would also be in the East and not just the West. It's not a interpretation in nowcasting it is using the radar and taking into consideration alot of other things which is more accurate. Imagine this if the BBC had predicted heavy snowfall for today which they they had on Sunday would the Schools be open today I ask you? It's your and the Headmasters/Mistress decision to listen to the BBC but please give them a call if they do get it wrong as they have on many occasions including this weekend, oh and who can ever forget this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqs1YXfdtGE

Tbf, I recall that the BBC were warning of heavy snow well before Tuesday evening and on Saturday they were only predicting light snow for yesterday. However, those are interesting links Dell Boy and you seem to know more about weather forcasting than most of us. Perhaps you could become the forum's own weather expert and warn us if you think the bigger forcasters are wrong in the future! [8D]

quote:lol I will see you on the forum during the adverse weather then? The BBC forecasted lighter snow but persisting through Sunday into Monday with accumulations of between 5 to 15 cm and blowing around with drifting snow for our Region. They downgraded that warning at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning in the first live broadcast, that's the trouble they run pre-recorded forecasts during the night on the BBC and I was up well into the early hours weather watching on the radar and the forum (sad I know) and we witnessed the warmer uppers spread into the region via 3 am. However if the warmer front had of been a little later the snow and colder uppers from Holland and Germany would have gave us those measures quite easily if not more so a lucky escape. It was only 100 km's off the Norfolk Coast and when the warm front met - it broke up into the North Sea. Some of the more experienced forecasters on the forum had already forcasted this well before the BBC. Forecasting weather in these circumstances are very difficult IN DEFENCE of the BBC and Met.Office. However these weather conditions are a very much localised event what we call marginal. I have been iterested in the weather for a few yearS now but not experienced enough to give you a forecast, I would much rather believe the forecasters on the forum because I can honestly say they have been correct every time or may just have been lucky but that's different to nowcasting the weather for Hertford.[:D] Did you know that the presenters on the BBC all have there own forecast but it is the head of the BBC forecasting team who makes the final decision, incidentally he has just been given a massive pay rise, well worth it. So how much would I get for my forecast on here Admin? lol Mainly the BBC do call on the more adverse forecast during marginal situations to cover themselves and every 1 is happy if it don't happen no complaints from you or any others, but if they drastically got it wrong in those circumstances what would happen then? We all know that answer from 1987. Edit: yes the BBC were forecasting snow to the East on Sunday and Monday but the models told them it would be it the West on Tuesday Morning, only later that day from the 12 ghz they upgraded to the East again, will be interesting for the forecasted heavy snow in the West tomorrow will it spread East I suggest you look at the forum. hu hu mmmm. Edit update: very interesting for Herts. now http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/60296-3-counties-ea-cold-spell-discussion-part-6/

Admin I don't want this to become a weather forum but I must post this to back up my claim, note the date he posted this and the streamer he mentioned had Hertford included: Roger J Smith * * Cumulonimbus * PipPipPipPipPipPip * Group: Members * Posts: 3,487 * Joined: 08-September 05 * Gender:Male * Location:Vancouver BC Canada Posted 03 January 2010 - 22:19 Nick, I'm getting the feeling that rather severe conditions could develop from Tuesday onward, the distinction between what's already happening and severe being perhaps a matter of degrees (or lack of them) ... but I foresee some temperatures as low as -10 C or -12 C even in snow-covered areas of central and southern inland England as the cold feed slowly intensifies. I am also foreseeing some localized heavy snowfalls with this low pressure system developing in the southern end of the North Sea and a moderately strong NE gradient of 25-40 knots. Is there a name given to some local streamer from The Wash feeding SW or SSW, like the name for the Cheshire Gap streamer? Because that sort of effect could develop and give places around Cambridge, Luton and north of London generally a heavy snowfall event later this week? Kent and parts of East Anglia may also get hit fairly hard at times. But further north, while it may be hit or miss, I could easily foresee 20-40 cms of snow falling in some places in Yorkshire and northeast England. Northern Ireland and parts of eastern Ireland could see their fair share of snow streamers during the week. And with that ridge appearing closer to Scotland later in the week, there could be opportunities for some locally sub -20 C readings to appear (if the nights stay clear). This post has been edited by Roger J Smith: 03 January 2010 - 22:22 I know who I would listen to. Link:http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/59644-new-year-cold-spell/ [;)] Also read Nick F post further down the thread.Nick F Thursday 7th January: During Saturday, further mainly light snow showers look like blowing inland across England and Wales on the strong biting easterly winds - perhaps gusting to gale force along the east coast - which will surely produce quite a severe wind chill towards the east. Sunday into Monday's developments still are rather uncertain: an upper warm front, associated with low over central Europe, is shown by the faxes to slide in from the near continent - which will inject less cold air and moisture aloft across southern England, which will likely produce thickening cloud across southern and central England bringing outbreaks of snow at times inland though perhaps sleet along coasts. GFS doesn't suggest much heaviness of the snowfall, UKMO suggests some heavier falls.

Todays weather forecast is not too bad according to the BBC forecast on the 10 o'clock news last night.[:0] They got it right. But no mention of possible travel disruption unless this is now becoming the norm. However the Met Office upgraded the snow for our region at 4.31 am quite a surprise they were quick off the mark there. [:0]

The Met. Office have decided to disagree with their own model runs, that's incredible this must be the first time in the Met Office history since computers were used in forecasting, the reason because the model run is not showing the East Pacific Oscillation. My guess is that they don't want to get this 1 wrong so now they are relying on model watching instead just like the rest of us and a experienced forecasters judgement with the E.P.O. taken into condideration. This has to be the most difficult period of model watching I can remember in 3 years. Things are all over the place at the moment it could go Very cold with huge huge amounts of snow or change back to a milder period. We won't know until the early hours of Wednesday so can still go 1 way or another atm. sorry I can't be much more help but it's going to be colder but how much is it going to be intense cold with snow is the question even the forecasters don't have the answer just yet. Very exciting times if we get the Norherly taking control the last amount of Snow we had in Hertford will account to nothing if this comes off.

Ok here is the latest update regarding the weather forecast for Hertford. A Northerly is heading down as I warned on here on the 22nd Jan. now you will begin to see the BBC and Sky Forecasters adding more detail into this over the next couple of days and the Met. Office will be issuing severe weather warnings for parts of the British Isles accordingly. A Northerly is usually short lived 3 to 4 days max. We don't usually get a lot of Snow from a Northerly in Hertford that's usually more confined to the coast of NE England and the Norfolk Coast but on this very rare occassion last seen in the Winter of 1947 a Easterly is tracking it's way into Britain during this time period so it's going to be very cold with sub zero temperatures and PERHAPS some Snow for Herford how much is very hard to say at this time, it may be a case of nowcasting which I mentioned earlier in this thread. We may see a little milder air topple over us for a day or 2 on Monday next week before the Easterly takes it's hold when I say hold this would block out any warmer pressure from getting into Britain the same as happened during the last cold spell, BUT a lot could happen between next Tuesday and now so we are not 100% sure on this just yet but a trend is developing on the ensemble. If the block occurs Herford and most of the British Isles will be in a DEEP FREEZE again but this time we could see longer periods and a deeper accumulation of Snow fall than last time because of the pressure build over Greenland. Hope this makes sense, so YES I would certainly get out those winter woolies for at least the short term forecast over the weekend it would be Well Worth It. Well it's nice to know you have an interest in the weather for Hertford it does help to break the ice when having a conversation with a stranger. The extreme cold Easterly block has somewhat slowed down a little and most likely will not reach Hertford until around the 6th of February but that still hangs in the balance as a number of factors can change this to be earlier or later in February. This means as I mentioned earlier a slightly milder spell of Weather from late Monday onwards until the block gets over (if it makes it). However it looks pretty wintry from the Northerly for Sunday into Monday morning for Hertford. I’m issuing this as a early warning please look out for a more detailed update in the next 24 hours.

Forecast Update: As most of you will have probably viewed the BBC Weather Forecast by now the Northerly will reach our region tomorrow afternoon and heavy Snow warnings are now being issued for parts of Britain. What does the weather have in store for Hertford and most important will it Snow? Like I said a Northerly usually gives Snowfall to coastal districts and they will see the heaviest of Snowfall in N.E.Scotland, N.E .England and East Anglia the worst affected areas. However I wont be surprised that a few troughs will develop on Sunday evening as the wind begins to change direction which may give us Snow showers in the early hours of Monday morning but they will not accumulate too much if they do manage over to our Region. Its very difficult to forecast the precipitation and troughs until a few hours before for weather forecasters in this set up so generally you will hear the term maybe a few showers making the way inland so listen carefully because the dew point is very favourable in Hertford according to my Pine Cones. Briefly: A very cold weekend with a wind-chill, frost in the mornings, sunny days and temperatures struggling above 3c. Now for the very important bit: The Lover from Russia looks like to be making the journey over to us in the next few days, the high pressure over Greenland is now starting to form just 1 of several factors that helps it on its journey, the other important factor is that a High Atlantic pressure is starting to build to our South over Spain so now I have a 90% confidence that will be over us between the 6th and 8th of February. Now the pressures building looks to be very high over the said areas, the higher those pressures rise all depends on how quickly the Easterly will get here including the jet stream so its very difficult to call a.t.m. The block will most definitely develop when it arrives but this does not guarantee Snow thats another factor which needs to occur so it may be extremely cold, dry and sunny with temperatures dropping to -16 in parts of our Region, its also worth mentioning that it may not be extreme cold either but it will dominate our weather for February so expect a very cold month overall. However a.t.m. everything looks like its fitting in for 1 hell of a beast to greet us in Hertford with a potential for huge amounts of Snow during its long stay. The longer it stalled in its current position its been most favourable for all those factors to materialise. The majority of model runs and the ensembles which are now becoming a trend looks likely that this block will stretch from Siberia over to the U.S.A. and all I can say a.t.m. is WOW these charts have never been seen for many years and dare I say its a very similar set up as the Winter of 1947. Enjoy your weekend, watch out for those morning frosts on the roads and I hope you are now looking forward to part 3 of our wonderful Hertford Winter. [:D]

Well I hope I'm wrong but most of that information has been spoken of by senior forecasters on the Weather forum for the past few hours now. What the most fascinating thing is that the guy who forecasted our last 2 Snow events here in Britain is now agreeing with us. I'm just breaking it down into plain English for you folk in Hertford to understand, its quite scary looking at the recent charts very scary indeed, I dont want 2 cause panic because it may not be that extreme as 1947 but it has to be mentioned the charts are very similar if not better (worse) where do you get your information from you dont have Pine Cones aswell do you ? lol the Lover from Russia is for 007. from Russia with love but Im sure she will pay you a visit on your doorstep in a drift lol. Edit:I have just found this blog from a BBC forecaster aswell and they usually are very cautious in the words so have a good read of it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulhudson/

It's just started to Snow in Hertford only very light and wont last long its 1 of the troughs that made it across from the East Anglian Coast. The troughs that I was explaining about earlier in the thread that can appear almost anywhere when blown inland. Its a good job its not so big, I expect many more to be blown inland over the next 3-4 days so dont be surprised if a dusting or a cm or 2 will fall in Hertford. Edit: you can watch out for them here. http://www.meteox.co.uk/gmapstatic.aspx?zoom=6&type=zoom&x=242&y=215

As I said in a earlier post Steven, Its very difficult to forecast the precipitation and troughs until a few hours before for weather forecasters in this set up so generally you will hear the term maybe a few showers making the way inland so listen carefully because the dew point is very favourable in Hertford according to my Pine Cones. Thats great Steven, thanks so I know whom to ask if I want to update my weather records. Seriously whats your views on the potential of the Easterly reaching us it is 50-50 a.t.m.? My goodness if we do get the full force of that it would be incredible with -20 uppers, a block stretching thousands of miles and the North Sea Convection being sucked in. However it may well be the air from the Continent that is dragged across to Hertford in the end, not quite as pwerfull but still cold and snowy lasting approx 4-5 days. We should know by Tuesday whats going to happen we just need the GFS and the UKMO to agree on all the other models. We are now seeing a trend including the ensembles at t-168 but its still in F1.

I have some very important news regarding the Easterly. Ian Ferguson from the BBC weather forecasting team posted a comment on the Netweather forum earlier. Basically a member of the forum from Hertfordshire (I wonder whom that could be)citied and posted Ians blog with general thoughts about the Easterly that has caused hundreds of weather entusiasts opinions over the last few days. I posted his blog on the forum because there was a feeling of negativity among members after the 6 a. m. UKMO model run no longer showed the Easterly over Brirain in early February. This was very confusing because all other runs apart from the UKMO run have been showing it now for around 4 days. I posted Ian's blog because he favoured the Easterly taking control of our weather in February. He posted to clarify that the data output from the run which the BBC use for forecasting in future forecasting was wrong in there opinion and that the team at the B.B.C. have been in a meeting earlier today to discuss this. At the moment they are disregarding the model data in the forecast and we have learnt that the model has been wrong on several occasions so far. Apparently they have not used the data from the run for 4 days now. We had a general feeling that something must be wrong on the run because all other runs have shown a trend apart from the UKMO recently. The news came as a great relief for the forum members because of the output data we knew something must have been wrong somewhere. I think this highlights the awful forecasting earlier in January from the BBC its not there fault something is seriously wrong at the Met.Office in my opinion, wrong data is being fed into the computers and because this has been a winter a lot different from others its throwing out very contradicting, confusing weather charts. here is the link to the thread. Ian Fergusons post is half way down the page and continues for 2 further pages with replys: the other posters that commented on the subject is Snowstorm1, nick sussex, Snowman0697, mark bayley, frosty 039 and some1 called Blizzrd of oz from Hertfordsire. http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/60853-model-output-discussion/page__st__85 The Met. Office is in such a mess at the moment which I did mention in my first post on this thread. heads will role and the BBC now have the information provided to them out to tender.. dont you dare ask why dont I put in for it. lol

Weather Forecast update: Monday starts very cold and icy so be careful on the roads, temperatures gradually rising through the day to 6c feeling milder. Rain and milder weather over our Region on Tuesday. Wednesday to Friday near normal temperature feeling less cold. A battle is raging between the milder weather to the South and the colder weather to the East, which 1 wins the command for the second week in February is uncertain, however confidence is favourable to a return of colder weather by next weekend which may just allow the Easterly to make its move towards us in the second week of February.(The extreme cold Easterly still remains a threat for the second week in February uncertainly remains) I will update in the next 48 hours when I will have a more detailed forecast for next weekend and the second week of February also if the Beast from the East finally makes a move or if the milder weather takes control. Very interesting times ahead as the Easterly threat refuses to go away. The extreme cold weather from the East forcasted for next weekend has been downgraded so some good news at least.

General Outlook: The models have been all over the place during the last 8 days, they are starting to settle now and are more in line towards agreement with mild, wet and windy weather for the next 5 days. The extremely cold Easterly wont reach us in the near future however the threat remains but confidence is low atm. so good news. I will update on here if and when there is any change because the models have been a total mess recently and just because they look to be favouring milder conditions please be aware that they can change so quickly. I wouldnt be surprised in the slightest if signs show colder conditions heading our way in the next few days. I dont trust the model runs at the moment because of the eratic outputs and also experienced forecasters are saying caution must be taken. This was highlighted yesterday evening after the Met. Office held a meeting and the agreement was that the Easterly cold and a blocking of the Atlantic air could still play a major roll in Februarys weather, what do they know? lol. Summing the situation up its a weather forecasters nightmare a.t.m., weather forecasters have been far too reliant on model runs over the last few years and this winter has thrown a spanner into the works tending for the models to go crazy from 1 extreme to another. My conclusion is that this Winter is not quite over yet and I expect in the very least another very cold perhaps snowy couple of days similar to last February, so be prepared. Roll on Summer. [8D] Edit: here is a post on a weather forum from Ian Fergusson a B.B.C. weather forecaster. As I noted on my blog (and I'm still reluctant to shift my somewhat ambivalent assessment at this juncture), there's still a chance of this being a distinctly cold end-game but it's likely to be a mid-next-week transition to anything distinctly chillier here in the West (weekend transition to something more SE'ly is likely later into the weekend in the SE/E, at least if latest UKMO GM is to be trusted). The flip-flop (and clearly for some, frustrating) nature of recent deterministic model runs is all thanks to the varying degrees of ridge amplification and its eastwards progress next week, plus it's noteworthy how the spread of EC EPS and Met Office MOGREPS solutions both for the weekend and into next week show a much greater spread than the norm. But hey-ho, such is the nature of this scientific discipline and especially at such essentially 'sci-fi' range peering into the future. The UKMO' latest detailed standpoint on the 6-10 / 10-15 day period (cited partially below and due to be updated at midnight - I do stress this!) says it all, in my mind, in terms of the continued uncertainty - hence my own low-grade enthusiasm over all this until we get into the weekend and see how it all develops thereafter. Cold? Probably. Very cold? Possibly (but by no means a done deal). Snowy? Well, based on the currently declining heavy PPN signal, maybe nothing significant on the cards, at least for lowland S. British Isles.... but then hey, the detail remains so very elusive that anything is possible. In the view of UKMO Ops Centre earlier today: "Significant uncertainty extends into this period. Favoured scenario is (snip) on unsettled side and often rather cold, perhaps cold..... (snip)........the balance of EPS output suggests low pressure continuing to dominate over the Atlantic next week, leading to a more SE’ly type developing bringing frontal zones erratically into the UK, leading to occasional snow risk in the north and east". Anyway, let's see what the next (flip-flop?) runs hint towards. http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/60981-model-output-discussion/page__st__187 7th and 10th post in the thread... I think I will let you be the judge of this because its guess work what the weather has in store for Hertford a.t.m. [?] [?] Sorry I cant be of any more help. [:(]

I posted this on the 28th January earlier in the thread. The block will most definitely develop when it arrives but this does not guarantee Snow thats another factor which needs to occur so it may be extremely cold, dry and sunny. Update: It will feel very cold on Monday and as we get into the second half of the week we are likely to see an increasing risk of snow showers. I mentioned earlier in the thread how snow is difficult to forecast so far ahead so I cant say for sure but it looks likely that Friday may bring us some disruptive snow to our region. I will post a update nearer the time. Its going to be a very cold month with no signs of it getting any milder as the cold weather block takes control in the coming days. I think its worth mentioning as from the 14th February it looks like we could see temperatures dropping even lower than the previous week and due to other weather patterns developing it may be a very snowy week so this is a early warning. Edit: Steve Im not messing with the thread and Im glad Admin has sorted out the database. [:D]

Notice that the Met.Office have updated the forecast this morning lol. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/uk_forecast_weather.html After studying the latest fax charts I think we may start to see snow showers as early as Monday evening, mostly rain and sleet during the afternoon turning to snow in the evening and then its down to nowcasting, its hard to tell the amounts of precipitation they will be come tomorrow evening. I will keep the thread updated. Luvly Jubly. Edit: I have just seen all the latest model runs and this cold weather has no signs of going anywhere for the next 10 days at least. The charts are very similar to the January very cold weather and snow, it will get colder each day from now and looking at the runs it looks like more persistent snow and sleet for Wednesday and Friday. Maybe its not going to be quite as cold this week as it was in January. Next week looks even colder for some parts of the country than it was in January.[:0] Im not even go to mention Saturday at the moment. [;)] Grandads beginning to get very excitied. The Met. Office have issued an early warning for Kent and East Sussex on Thursday, I wonder if the heavier snow will track across to our Region, will it snow and settle in Hertford? It certainly looks like we will get some heavy showers on Thursday and Friday, I will keep you updated but it looks like a radar watch event again. http://www.metoffice.com/weather/uk/se/se_forecast_warnings.html Back to today, a lot more precipitation than first thought coming over from the wash. The snow and sleet today wont settle but as the ground temperatures become colder this evening any fall of the white stuff will settle however the showers should move away later this evening, dont be surprised wakening up to a dusting in the morning. Ice on the roads aswell so be careful, temperatures falling to -3. Edit: There is links provided for radar watching at the start of this thread.

Weather warning extented by the Met. office this evening. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/se/se_forecast_warnings.html Hertfordshire is not included, however as you may have noticed there has been a few snow showers in Hertford today but with the wind now changing direction we should notice a decrease in snow showers over us, watch out for the ice in the morning. Thursday and Friday mainly sunny but still feeling very cold in the wind chill, the weekend continues very cold and looking further ahead it remains cold/colder next week. I will update the forecast at the weekend, a.t.m. the model runs and ensembles are showing very cold weather again next week and a lot more snow is likely. If the model runs are still showing this trend at the weekend be prepared as I said in another post earlier. However the cold front could progress further East and it may turn a little milder but confidence is low on milder weather taking control next week. Its going to be another forecasters nightmare over the next few days again because a number of weather patterns could occur in the coming days and again the main models are not in agreeement with 1 another so I will let you know what the weather has in store for Hertford in due course. We have not experienced the full force of the Easterly this week its over the rest of Western Europe Germany in particular.

It certainly looks like a unexpected longer spell of snow may well be heading in from the North Sea over East Anglia this is the band of snow forecasted for Sussex but it looks to be far too much North to me and with the wind direction changing again I wouldnt be surprised if we get a cm or 2 from this during the early hours of the morning if it continues in a Westerly direction. Its still a few hours away yet and Im monitoring it on the radar we may just catch the Northern end of this band of snow its all down to nowcasting now and I wouldnt take the BBC forecast as Gospel because things have and are changing minute by minute atm. I just thought I would warn members on here because things are realy starting to pep up over the North Sea and this has not been mentioned on the B.B.C. or Sky forecasts as yet. Im afraid its not much better for next week either cold and more widespread snow for next week is the trend on the models now. I will keep you updated but Monday night could bring us lots of snow however this may be a marginal event for Hertford atm it may be sleet or rain. I have a feeling that the upper temperatures may just be cold enough for snow like last February.

The latest model runs suggest next week will be cold, atm snow on higher ground in Scotland and the North of England, the South still looks like a marginal event with a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. Im going to wait until the weekend before I give my opinion on the weather outlook for Hertford in the coming week. The media forecasts are telling us rain in the South East from Tuesday, however there is a very cold front to our South East that may bring our temperature down a degree or 2 just cold enough to turn the precipitation into snow.
Reply ID 71883
there was snow last night actually; Although not a lot, and the rain fairly quickly melted it away. Also interestingly, there was a 3degree temperature difference between hertford in the town, and 2 miles out of town in the countryside!

This is the latest model run: very cold upper temperatures to our SE heads into our Region and East Anglia during Monday evening, this was my concern in a earlier post. The precipitation heading down from the North will turn to snow as it heads into our Region during the early hours of Tuesday morning. The precipitation level is quite high. If the models are showing this over the weekend you will see a weather warning issued from the Met. Office. They wont issue any warnings this far out in timescale because it could all change. So atm Im looking at this event with foresight, this is not a forecast for Tuesday, it could all show a different set up on the next run. Edit: I posted this 0n February 6th, 'I think its worth mentioning as from the 14th February it looks like we could see temperatures dropping even lower than the previous week and due to other weather patterns developing it may be a very snowy week so this is a early warning'. The latest ensembles are showing deep cold and the UKMO charts are now showing snow for our Region. I expect snow warnings to be issued in the next couple of days unless there is a major downgrade. Next week looks likely to turn out a very snowy week in Hertford atm. Snow depths could be quite deep. [?] I will keep you updated of any downgrades or possible snow depths, imo at present it will be quite an event. [:0] We wont know for sure from the B.B.C. weather forecast until 24 hours before so watch the forecast [;)] or check here for more details. Posted this on Friday: I expect snow warnings to be issued in the next couple of days unless there is a major downgrade. There it is updated 10.49 today http://www.metoffice.com/weather/uk/ee/ee_forecast_warnings.html Sprocket it has snowed with even -2 uppers like I said its a marginal event you may need your wellington boots and brolly especially down Hertingfordbury Park and I agree it may be no more that a slushy mess. Its going to stall over our Region so it may start as rain and then fall as snow,(Met.Office link) I wont post the runs from 6am this morning because it seems to me a lot of you have access to the charts already. Have you looked at the latest runs and charts for next weekend Sprocket I dont mean the League table lol. [;)]Mind you Chelsea are doing well. Lets hope the match will be on and we can put another 9 goals past them like we did to them on that famous day 30th September a couple of seasons ago. The early warnings were posted back on the 6th February, I try to provide members on this forum what the weather may turn out like with the projected model runs for Hertford. This was not a forecast for snow I was letting the forum know in advance of possible conditions with a 50% or more confidence rate. I have said in many of my posts that things can change from this far out of a timescale. I also said that this week could be colder and snowy for many than what the Newspapers were making headlines of for last weeks weather http://www.metoffice.com/weather/uk/ee/ee_forecast_warnings.html (Kent apart) Its all down to nowcasting in these synoptics setups. [:D] Edit:looks to me that the latest models are in agreement with the human input weather forecast from the Met. office earlier the ensembles show this aswell, its a ever changing situation and I maintain my thought its purely down to nowcasting on Tuesday. oh dear [:0] The following are the thoughts of a experienced weather forecaster taken from a weather forum it explains in detail, this backs up your post what the weather will be on Tuesday/Wednesday in Hertford. I’ve been having a pretty quick look at the potential snowfall developments on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, and the synoptics behind the evolution are really quite interesting (even if they end up failing us). At this range, the various model provisions are a little up in the air and this is by no means a dead cert. However, they all seem to be flagging a similar scenario, just with slightly different positions and phasings. I’ve tried to sum up what I’m seeing at various stages in the evolution of Tuesday/Wednesday’s weather, and I’m calling upon the latest outputs (and also those of the last couple of days). First and foremost, the basic synoptics for Tuesday are pretty simple really. A cold front is moving south-eastwards across the country, forced from a parent low west of Ireland. Given the state of our part of the Northern hemisphere at the moment, it’s not surprising that any warmth surrounding the frontal system is sparse. Something of a warm sector tongue is being advected into the North Sea and southern England through Tuesday but this really will be dying on its feet. Here’s the general synoptics (based on current models) for Tuesday morning, as returning polar maritime air (rPm) is quickly replaced by polar maritime, after its brief jaunt across the UK. The interesting thing to note, however, is the surface flow across the continent through Tuesday and into Wednesday. As has been the case for quite a while now, an easterly push begins at the surface and much lower-dewpoint continental air begins to advance westwards towards our shores on Tuesday afternoon. This isn’t likely to be marked by any dynamic cloud/precipitation feature as the colder air is largely at the surface. Heights and mid level moisture do drop off though, such that 850hPa wet bulb temperatures of 4C across East Anglia on Tuesday afternoon drop close to zero by Wednesday morning, as the warmer rPm intrusion weakens. It’s as this surface air begins to undercut the Pm/rPm boundary during Tuesday night that any remaining precipitation could begin to reach the surface as snow. It’s quite an interesting feature, as it’s essentially a collision of cold fronts, with any warmer tongue of air in between lifted free of the surface and diluted. At the moment, I’d go for the situation across the SE to be the more prominent because of the larger push of cold surface dewpoints, but it’s noted that a similar boundary may form across NE Scotland. The air is already cold here so cold frontal precipitation may already be falling as snow. However, a deepening surface easterly off Norway may replicate the lower dewpoint air of the south-east, and this would only reinforce the potential for snow (especially across the Northern Isles). The current models have a number of things working in our favour, but there are a couple of knife-edge parameters that could change quickly. Firstly, it’s all about the phasing. The cold front heading south-eastwards is going to stall with time as the boundary between the rPm and Pm airmasses is moderated and the steering flow becomes aligned with the front itself. If this occurs earlier, then the arrival of the surface cold air from the east would not be meeting sufficiently heavy precipitation, and would likely die out as the rain/snow evaporates before reaching the ground. For snow, we really need the phasing of the cold front to coincide with the arrival of continental air, such that the precipitation is still sufficiently intense for snow to sea level. This will be largely dictated by the amount of mid level moisture within the narrow rPm snout ahead of the cold front. If that’s washed out pretty quickly then there just won’t be a sufficient supply of moisture to keep the precipitation going. Once undercut by the cold air, the precipitation will rapidly decay anyway, and if it’s already light when this starts to happen, it’ll be curtains for any snow at ground level. The position of the cold front is also important, and there’s currently some disagreement about how far east it will progress before it dies away (UKMO most progressive with the eastward limit of the front). I note that the UKMO are going for a standard 5cm at the moment, largely for SE England and NE Scotland. The current ECM fails to bring the front quite so far east, but still gives 2-3cm across parts of the Midlands. My feelings are mixed at the moment. I’m not seeing enough support for a significant snowfall event, but I am encouraged to see the potential snowfall amounts indicated in the two big hitting models. As an aside, the current ECM has a much bigger snowfall event across Wales and NW England on Thursday but that’s for another time. I’m not holding out much hope for Tuesday really but I would be advising people of a potential wet covering of a few centimetres in a very short space of time (as are the UKMO), allbeit locally.

Lol. what its saying is that the timing of the cold front needs to be within a certain timeframe of the heaviest precipitation around our Region (East Anglia?) If the cold doesnt reach us during that time then obviously it will be rain, the Met.Office are going on the chance of a longer timeframe because the precipitation is forecasted to stall over us in the SE and East Anglia Regions. Thats why the BBC-Met.Office are forecasting snow for us. Its not a classic set up of snowy conditions and my personal opinion is that it will start to fall as rain and sleet to begin with and it will turn to snow later Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning. Because its quite heavy PPN the snow will settle over wet ground so for a while we may have several cms of laying snow on Wednesday but slowly melting during the afternoon and freezing up again early evening. Its very close to call and thats why I keep saying its a nowcast forecast by that I mean within a couple of hours timeframe, the Met. office seem sure of it turning to snow and to be on the safe side somewhere in the SE and East Anglia will see 5 cm of laying snow.In general terms they always tend to use 5 cm as a strarting point, 1 just cant predict the amounts until a few hours before thats why its called localised accumalations. SPROCKET may be right with his views no more than a slush mess if that, however the latest runs suggest the cold hitting us just as the precipitation hits us from the North. Hmm a very difficult 1 to call until nearer the time a forecasters nightmare setup and any 1 who guesses for snow will tell you I told you so and any 1 who guesses sleet and rain will tell you I told you so. [:p] I will know more nearer the time and update on here. April brings the sweet spring showers, On and on for hours and hours. Farmers fear unkindly May Frost by night and hail by day. June just rains and never stops Thirty days and spoils the crops. In July the sun is hot. Is it shining? No, it's not. August, cold and dank and wet, Brings more rain than any yet. Bleak September's mist and mud Is enough to chill the blood. Then October adds a gale, Wind and slush and rain and hail. Dark November brings the fog Should not do it to a dog. Freezing wet December, then Bloody January again! Sorted.

The Met. office have removed the warnings for Hertfordshire at 10.14am, the higher risk of snow as the front stalls is now Bedfordshire,Cambridgeshire and Norfolk according to the Met.Office. This is a ever changing situation I dont think we can exclude Hertford from this atm and I expect further changes during the next 24 hrs. Here is the latest precipitation chart: It all depends on the timing of the cold hitting over us, its so difficult to forecast where it will fall as snow for weather forecasters. This weather channel has a weather radar map. It looks like a thin belt of rain/sleet/snow going eastward. We had it in St Albans a while ago, but it is clear now. Click on Regional Radar (Rain) on the map. http://uk.weather.com/weather/today-Hertford-UKXX1871?fromSearch=true

The Met. Office. have issued a weather warning for Hertfordshire, a moderate risk of heavy snow today and tomorrow, looking at the latest runs and charts we could see some snow in Hertford especially next Monday is much a higher risk atm. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/ee_forecast_warnings.html

Your welcome Rachel, its raining at the moment but the warning has been issued because it may turn to snow later in the day, the marginal situation comes into play again where ever the cold pool is when the precipitation is around. Other Regions of the country have had a overnight fall of snow and its snowing in the West atm. This may not result to anything but its best to be aware, dew points are not favourable for snow just yet however its falling down the scale now.

I posted this on the 6th February.... 'I think its worth mentioning as from the 14th February it looks like we could see temperatures dropping even lower than the previous week and due to other weather patterns developing it may be a very snowy week so this is a early warning'... sorry I got it wrong - 30 miles North of us and they have Snow 8 cm deep. Oh well I think I will give up on this thread now, Sprocket was right. Thats all folks, I wont be posting in this thread anymore because I don't want to be blamed for my wrong forecasts even though it was 12 days ago, you wont get that info on the BBC when I posted the warning. No more snow for Hertford, Winters over relax every 1 only rain. Ha ha.

I for one hope you do carry on posting Dell boy, great thread that is very popular. people want to be warned if there is a risk of severe weather that may affect their daily agenda, regardless of whether it materialises or not. This week we could easily of had a couple of dumpings but for a degree or two... like you have mentioned..so marginal! Might see you at the game saturday...weather permitting.

quote:Thankyou Sprocket, yes you are right in saying this week has been a marginal snow event, maybe I have been a bit too hesitant with predicting Winter is over. [;)] Next week somewhere in the UK will have a huge amount of snow but exactly where is difficult to say atm lots of potential in the model runs with masses amounts of troughs developing. I think next weeks potential for snowfall is more widespread so yes I shall keep posting on the thread until Winter is over and continue to keep folk of Hertford up to date. In the longger term the forecast for March doesnt look good either, no sign of Spring yet. I'm afraid the models are showing trends towards cold and below average temperatures again with no midler air getting through the block of colder air. This Sunday evening looks likely we may see the rain turning increasingly to snow overnight into Monday morning and after that who knows. We need a win on Saturday lets hope so.

I think its safe to say we wont see any snow next week in Hertford reading from the latest model runs it will be rain. (subject to change) If the low progresses 80 miles further East then we will be in the frame for plenty of heavy snow but I cant see this happening. Parts of the Midlands and Northern England are likely to have quite heavy falls of snow so if you are travelling next week be aware. EDIT: As I said subject to change new warning issued AT 16.34 Today expect further changes. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/ee_forecast_warnings.html EDIT: New update from the Met. Office http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/ee_forecast_warnings.html I think those areas that recieved snow last week are more at risk again on Monday for us in Hertford another marginal event however there is lots of precip around so lots of rain if it does not fall as snow. If you are wathching the BBC forecasts on News 24 atm they have not been updated yet according to the latest model runs, the Met. Office have the forecast more up to date. I have a feeling that human input for the weather forecast will play a much bigger part this week because the models are a muddle atm.

WARNING possible snow arriving in the next few hours on its Northern edge could possibly be a covering in the morning, it should turn back to rain and sleet. This is a very marginal situation so just be aware tonight and tomorrow morning. http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-bin/expertcharts?LANG=en&MENU=0000000000&CONT=ukuk&MODELL=nae&MODELLTYP=1&BASE=-&VAR=prty&HH=24&ZOOM=0&ARCHIV=0&WMO=

Frost's at night so gardeners beware afterall its only March, the Daffodils are late this year in flowering. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/weather/7456054/Coldest-winter-in-30-years-hits-daffodil-festival.html

Can we expect the volcanic eruption in Iceland to have any effect on our weather? I know that the plume has led to a planned closure of airspace over Scotland, but will the effects extend as far as SE England? http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation/vaac/vaacuk_vag.html

Lovely weather today and tomorrow even warmer unfortunatly it wont last into the Bank Holiday weekend. The models suggest much cooler conditions with even a possibility of hail showers but mainly further North. Sunday may be wet in Hertford but its too early to say for sure atm. A slightly better day on Monday and then back to near normal temperatures. Gardeners beware those tender plants may need some protection over the weekend. The month of May looks likely to be a very dry month with above average temperatures, so a temporary break to the good weather a typical Bank Holiday weekend cool and probably wet on Sunday. Updates later.

Currently we have a blocking over the UK and it's very stubborn to move away and allow milder air to move over us. It will be a little milder in the next few days by day but the night time temperatures will drop to around 3 to 4 degrees, so feeling quite cold. Don't put the tender bedding plants out in the garden just yet, next week doesn't look much of a improvement either a.t.m. it looks like another cold Northerly will reach us in Hertford with cold rain again at the weekend and snow on higher ground in some parts of the UK. Not a good start to May and a testing time for gardeners.

This weekend will be cold and there is a chance of sleet showers. I mentioned in a earlier post that last weekend there was a chance of hail showers and we did have a couple of hail showers all be it only for 1 or 2 minutes. Lol, yes the GFS model has been projecting much lower temperatures of late, GFS 12Z goes for a slackening northerly with sunshine and showers and frosty nights, but the northerly isn't as potent as shown on earlier runs, with sleet/snow showers at low levels on the 10th/11th likely to be restricted to Scotland and perhaps north-east England, and after that it slowly warms up. GFS showing 6 degress max. for the SE over the weekend on the latest run also but the ECM runs have been more accurate and temperatures are more likely to be around 9 to 10 degrees here in Hertford.

Thankyou, however you must remember that things can change when the forecast is 10 to 14 days away but temperatures are back to the seasonal norm over the weekend and like I said there are signs of the Azores high heading over the Southern half of Britain later in the week atm which will make it very warm. Edit: It's snowing now in many parts of Northern England. [:0] and in East Yorkshire it has been the coldest May night in at least 27 years with a min temp of 0.1C. Back to Hertford, over the next couple of nights I think you may need to turn on your central heating, overnight temperatures will be a min of to 2 - 0 degrees.

Well the milder weather has returned but they MIGHT be another chilly Northerly in around 9 days time not to worry it wont be quite as cold as recently, the temperatures wont fall away too much IF this Northerly materializes. Next Saturday is better than Sunday for a bbq because we MIGHT have a few thunderstorms brewing on Sunday and Monday of next week a lot of convection around by then. Temperatures are going to steadily rise during the week and peak on Saturday to around 25 - 27 degrees. As for the Northerly I mentioned earlier it's still showing but I hedge my prediction that the high pressure will stay with us and it will continue warm and muggy for the foreseeable future. Why is it so warm when we have a northerly wind? Usually the warm weather comes from the south or the west doesn't it?
Reply ID 74517
quote:That's not a easy question to answer basically it's to do with pressure the low and high's and jet streams or jet streaks. I will try to answer your question. There are two major jet streams in the northern hemisphere in winter, one called the Polar Jet and is the one usually affecting latitudes around the British Isles. The second one is the Sub Tropical Jet which is usually centred about 25 north. Jet streams are caused by large changes of temperature through the atmosphere in a relatively short distance. The bigger the gradient then the stronger the winds and the reason why the Polar Jet is often stronger in winter than summer. Due to the larger change in temperature from the pole to the warmer areas further south. In summer, with the sun north of the equator this difference in temperature is less pronounced north to south. Taking the PJ (Polar Jet) it usually flows roughly west to east, sometimes almost flat sometimes with much variation in direction. You may hear forecasters talk about meridional flow-this is when the major wind pattern takes turns both northwards and southwards. Obviously this, usually, fast flowing mass of air can transport huge amounts of air from one place to another. Changes in both direction and temperatures either side of it are probably largely responsible for the development of most weather systems. In turn these are acted upon by the major troughs and ridges that are set up by the changes in the wind flow, especially its direction. Pressure. The reverse, anticyclonic or negative vorticity advection (NVA) will occur between the crest of an upper ridge and the back of the trough, due to the same process but with a clockwise (anticyclonic) spinning motion induced into the air as it runs up around the ridge. In such areas air is descending instead of ascending. Descent is very adept at killing off convection. Thus as the upper trough passes, severe weather becomes increasingly unlikely to occur. The timing of upper troughs and ridges is thus of considerable importance in severe weather forecasting. All other parameters may be in place for a big summer thunderstorm, but then along comes an upper ridge at the best time of day for storm formation and the whole thing fizzles out. The very warm/hot weather a.t.m. is moving up from Southern Europe we have a low developing from the North which will control Northern Britains weather from as early as next Monday. Here in Hertford we may just keep the milder air until Wednesday or Thursday. I mentioned the possibility of thunderstors in Hertford on Sunday in a earlier post but I think they will develop over the Northern half of Britain as the colder air clashes with the hot air. So to summarise we don't have a dominant wind force from the North and the high pressure is in place until the low makes tracks and undercuts the high pressure which in turn will spark a few thunderstorms further North. Click here http://www.xcweather.co.uk/ and you will see the current wind direction and speeds over Britain, hover your mouse over Stansted. I hope that answers your question. [:D]

It's not looking great with a very cool NE wind, max temperature's 12 to 14 degrees but it will feel pleasant in a sheltered spot in the sunshine. Night min. temperatures falling to 5 degrees, a.t.m. remaining dry but I will update the precipitation in a couple of days. It's not great Bank Hoiday weather if you compare it to this weekends heat however the warmer weather is likely to return around the 4th 5th of June so make another date in your diary for then. Let's hope it's the start of the The "June monsoon" I certainly hope so. B.b.q. weather 4 maybe 5 if you are sheltered and a 5 only if you are b.b.q ing in the afternoon because once the sun starts to set the temperatures will fall quite rapidly. The "June monsoon" is a reference to the way patterns traditionally change from blocked to zonal as we head through June, as the Atlantic in essence "wakes up". Sometimes it sets in during early June or even late May, but most of the time it takes until the back end of June, and following a spring with repeated northerly winds, it will often switch the weather pattern away from northerlies. But even if the current pattern does continue, another spell like this one, but in July instead of May, would end up very hot.

At long last we may have some decent rainfall after the Bank Holiday w/e. The June monsoon's bang on time this is good news as it's very likely the warmer weather is set to return with a prolonged settled spell of nice summer weather. Cooling off on Tuesday but feeling quite nice in the sunshine this coming week, I hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather this w/e. Caution must be taken because the uv rays from the Sun are very strong this time of year and be careful that those tender plants hardening off don't get sun scorched.

Update on next weeks weather: not quite as hot as last w/e with temperatures reaching around 23-25 degress max. by day next w/e, that's very comfortable warmth and falling to 12 degrees min. by night. A much brighter dry day tomorrow, temp. reaching 16-17 degress and like I said in a eralier post nice in a sheltered sunny location, Monday looks dry a.t.m. but cloudy. Tuesday looks unsettled with possible rain showers. During Wednesday we begin to notice the warmer weather returning lasting until the w/e. and hopefully beyond. Looking ahead at the 12th June for the England v U.S.A. World Cup game it looks like a scorcher a.t.m. subject to change. Watch this space. Phew

Next week: From Tuesday up until the w/e it will be very unsettled with rain and sunny intervals but still feeling warm with temperatures around 20 degrees. Next Saturday the warmer weather is set to return but also bringing with it possible thunderstorms next w/e, more details to follow. This Sunday I said in my last post a 'BIG 10' for b.b.q's, feeling very humid however we may get a thunderstorm or 2 if we are unlucky. It's a hit and miss situation weather forecasters can't locate where they will occur exactly until a few hours before the event. I said on the 21st May to make a date in your diary again for the 4th and 5th June, I hope you are all enjoying the great weather. I also said that the England v U.S.A. World Cup game on the 12th June could be a scorcher, it may not be quite a scorcher on that day but certainly from the 14th of June it looks like temperatures could reach 33 degrees and even higher. Some very unusual weather scenarios are occuring and this is extrmely interesting to Meteorologists. Hmmm. Update: A low is threatening to spoil the very hot weather from the 14th of June. Depending on where this low ends up over the British Isles it will influence if we have very hot temperatures or cooler temperatures with rain. I think we could end up with the heat in the South and cooler conditions in the North for the first week of the World Cup. There is a big dissagreement showing in the model runs but I think this could possibly be the the outcome. I have created my own weather forecast web page here: Please subscribe to my blog [:)] http://sites.google.com/site/accuraweather/

Its been a unsettled week but the weekend looks like settling down after Fridays showery rain. Saturday - sunny intervals, temperature 20 degrees feeling warmer in the sunny spells, b.b.q. weather 7. England 3 U.S.A. 0. Sunday the same as Saturday. Next week we wont feel the heat quite yet, mainly dry and more settled than this week but a cool breeze, temperatures hovering around 19 degrees. I don't really mind the heat, it is the lack of air-con I hate! At least in the USA (and some other countries) you can swelter in the heat outside but you can pop indoors and feel the icy blast of the A.C. inside to cool down. Also, when you have to do the ironing, hoovering (or vacuuming, sorry), and other many household/office etc.etc. chores you can, at least get a respite, but a.t.m. my basket of ironing is piling up as i just cannot face it - but know it has to be done! *J*

The prospect of thunderstorms is very slim although during Sunday we may get a little rain. Like I posted on my weather blog http://sites.google.com/site/accuraweather/weather-blog/weatherforecast it will become cooler next week and it will be much more comfortable for yourself and others that suffer from the heat. I don't think it will be too long before the heat returns but before then a few days of rain showers later next week but still feeling on the warm side. When the heat returns I think we could see record breaking temperatures, the models have been all over the place recently but the teleconnections and ensembles are showing signs of it returning. May I suggest you subscribe to my blog for further details so you can be prepared with your cold water bottles. Im sorry to have to inform you and others that suffer from the heat but it certainly looks like they will be lots more very HOT weather to come this summer, good news for others.

Erm.. I dont think so it wont last long before a breakdown next Monday. We may even get quite a lot of rain slowly moving to the South East on Tuesday next week. It will be very warm with high humidity levels today and Saturday temperature around 28 degrees but in around 10 days time we may experience a prolonged heatwave with temperatures reaching 33-34 degrees. However I did post a Heat warning on the 5th July at the top of this page and on my Weather blog on the 30th June http://sites.google.com/site/accuraweather/weather-blog/weatherforecast but this has been slightly downgraded in the last 48 hrs. I think the highest temperatures this w/e will be over the East Anglia Region. Is Hertford in the South East Region or East Anglia? I recall this has already been discussed on another thread quite some time ago on Hertford on Line. [;)] This is todays headline [IMG]http://sites.google.com/site/accuraweather/weather-blog/weatherforecast Has the Express been viewing this thread or has the Chief editor from The Mercury moved on and still viewing here, maybe they are now printing Frazers tips (page 15 on this thread) on how to keep cool? [:D] Met. Office advisory taking out of proportion i.m.o. but the high humidity will make it feel very uncomfortable not a very nice kind of heat, the wrong kind of just like the wrong type of Snow I suppose.[;)] [;)] http://sites.google.com/site/accuraweather/weather-blog/weatherforecast

Could they be a MAJOR prolonged heatwave on the way soon? I bet you wouldn't think so with the cooler conditions this week. Gemipicorn I think Iceland will be the best place to go quite soon, I may buy myself a ticket if what I have just seen actually occurs. Weather forecasters sometimes say rain in most places or they say localised rain. (Nowcasting) you can see where the heaviest rain is heading on here and you can track its path and zoom into your street in the pro version, but you can still click and zoom over Herford. http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ http://www.raintoday.co.uk/ The darker the colour is the heavier rain. Im unsure if Stevenage has had more rain than us this past year and I wont be able to tell you until I look at the recent statistics in comparison.

I actually changed the title of this thread started by me from 'Weather Forecast' to simply the title 'Weather' a few weeks ago as I thought this was more appropiate because I dont provide a weather forecast but more in the way of medium range conditions most likely expected. Today I changed the title from Weather to Weather (Eye In The Sky) as a light hearted gesture to Marilyn thats all and I didnt see the harm in that I wasnt aware of the policy and no harm was intent. May I request you to delete this thread at my request or lock it because I have taken the decision not to post on this thread again. This thread has nearly 15,000 views and Im sure a lot of members will be dissapointed I have taken this decision. Its such a shame that you allow personal insults to remain on here such as the 1 by Paul to me but take the hard line out on me for modifying the title of the thread.

I mentioned this a few months ago that we could have a dry summer here in the South East, the next couple of days should be a lot brighter and feel fresher, we have a warm front trapped in what weather forecasters call a dirty high. Even parts of Iceland are experiencing high temperatures but the heat is very tantalizing close to us (for heat lovers) and it wont take much to shift it over to us.

With winter now fast approaching the weather suddenly becomes important to most people, are we going to have a repeat of last winters extreme cold and snow? From Friday and the weekend it's looking good with temperatures reaching the dizzy high's of 24 degrees by day and sunny periods. It will feel more like early summer again however in around a weeks time it will feel more like winter and we could well see the first snowfalls of this autumn/winter. All the signs are showing that we could have another very cold winter so be prepared. Edit: Thankyou Steve, at least Im correct in saying the weekend is Friday and Saturday with Sunday being the first day of the week. [:)]

As many of you have seen the B.B.C. are pedicting snow for our Region later this evening... It looks like the band of snow will take the same track as Saturdays snow... It wont reach us until around 8-9 p.m. at its present rate... If you have a jorney from London I would advise a early getaway as the snow will hit during rush hour... As it hits us I dont think it will be heavy snow but it could still be around 2 to 4 cm settling... Take care on the roads... Wednesday looks like it could be a marginal event with rain for us... However this does not mean that milder weather will return its a low that will undrcut the cold pressure system and temperatures may not be cold enough for snow... But this is a everchanging situation.
Reply ID 78496
It's arrived very light snow it won't amount to much, sorry I was an hour out this band of snow has been very slow moving and difficuilt to track.
Reply ID 78498
Update: We could possibly see a few more cms from the band that is forming in the channel atm during the early hours be prepared. Oh dear Wednesday looks like another white out very heavy snow, as I mentioned on the snow thread the 22nd was always going to be a threat.

It looks like the heavy snow is to the North of us, the Met.Office are unsure of the track, as the band of snow heads over to East Anglia it still may give us some snow so be aware in the morning especialy if you are travelling North. [;)]

Winter always throws in a surprise just when we think the worst is over. It may not be as bad as December but don't be surprised at another very cold blast. The very cold is to the West and East of the UK with the Atlantic milder air over us atm which 1 wins the battle we have to wait and see, atm the main weather model runs are showing signs that the cold from the East will win. I will keep you updated with details closer to the time.

Will it be very cold or mild? This video explains a little more detail from my post on the the 7th and 8th of this month. A very confusing weather outlook because the massive solar flare is also causing a lot of concern for the meteorologists. Could it influence a shift in the extreme cold over Britain, we have to wait and see so don't store away the sledges just yet. http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/hi/news/newsid_9401000/9401269.stm

From Wednesday onwards the weather will improve the cloud cover and wind will decrease gradually giving way to hot sunny weather, temperatures rising up to 26-28 degrees next weekend.

Reply ID 83750
Ok 1 of the model runs is picking up on a very cold Northerly towards the end of the month this has been showing up in every run. If this was to develop into a Northerly blast it may bring us sleet or even snow showers but it will be short lived 2 or 3 days perhaps a little longer. In the meantime this week it will feel quite mild during breaks in the cloud when the sun appears, we may see a few showers by midweek but temperatures will remain above average. As for the model that is showing the Northerly well this model has been 1 of the more consistent and accurate models in recent months and I reckon the other models will pick up on the Northerly in the coming days. So a general change to milder weather and then perhaps a very cold feel towards the end of the month. Updates to follow. Edit: I think its worth mentioning that we are seeing a similar pattern emerging as was seen during the last 2 Autumns and Winters. [?]
