River behind housing estate near Hertford FC
I read on the Internet that if you drive past the turning to Hertford FC (on your right) you get to a housing estate on your right and the river behind the houses is good for fishing for Chub.
I went and had a look the other week and found it and it looks a nice place to fish but there are signs saying you need a permit to fish here and has HRA Ltd written at the bottom of the notice. Does any one no who HRA Ltd is or what it stands for and does a bailiff patrol this part of the river and if so how can you get a ticket to fish it.

HRA is Hornsmill Residents Association - to which residents of Tanners Crescent, Glovers Close and Waterdale belong and pay an annual fee to for maintenance of the riverbank and the cul-de-sac. Residents have fishing rights, am not aware of the procedure for non-residents.

You have to contact Leahoe at Herts County Council.
I had an 8 pound barbel from the same stretch 2 years ago.

Thanks for the info it is much appreciated. Who is Leahoe, is that the name of a person at Herts County Council and when you caught your Barbel James007 did you get a ticket from the Herts County Council before fishing and if so how much did you have to pay?

Fishing from the Hertford town side of the river from "cuts corner" where it meets the mimram right up to the end of the first field adjacent to the allotmemts is controlled by Abbey Cross which you will not get permission to fish(syndicate). The opposite banks are owned by the council and I'm not 100% sure on fishing rights there as abbey corss will have you believe that they have rights to the river itself. The next field(opposite the houses) is privately owned and day tickets are available from a farm house I believe, however I've never fished there, although I have seen some nice fish there and the barbel breed up that end of the river in the spring. It is much shallower though so not sure what the fishing will be like in the winter. I've fished various parts of this river over the years, catching barbel to 9lb, carp to 20lb and just about every fish species resides here to good size for the size of the river. If you follow the river passed the weirand viaduct the next stretch going passed the Riverside GC is run by WGC Angling club on a season ticket. Fishing this stretch is tough but potentially rewarding. Barbel in double figures reside as do some good size carp over 20lb.

Apologies, I didn't make myself clear. Leahoe is the name of the Sports and Social Club at Herts County Council. It is based at County Hall.
After several attempts by telephone, I went to the Club one lunchtime with a view to paying them for a day ticket but was told that there wasn't such a thing. The woman said to me that as I had asked for permission to fish the stretch on the other side (HCC land) she would allow me to do so for one day.
So I did. Apart from the Barbel, I caught two beautiful carp, three chub of good size, a rainbow trout and a bream. The water quality is fantastic, hence the different types that were caught [8D]

had agood look along the river by the allotments this stretch is club water further down stream the bend where the two rivers meet and the bend behind hertford fc look very good with deep runs and nice slow even pace.
as for the stretches on the herford council side i made inquires and you can fish this free and there are no day tickets as this public land owned by hcc.

Not sure who you've been asking but if you mean the stretch right of the bridge as your facing the football club (the road side bank) I think you'll find it is not free fishing and is run the HCC social club for which you need to be a member to fish there.
