The Biggest

Steve, you've kept me in suspenders for far too long. Just who does own the most property in Hertford - Macmullens, the Queen, Lord Salisbury or the Knights Templar?[?]

Question for Sloop: Who owns the most land in Hertford town centre? McMullens? Trinity College? The Queen?
Found Steve's post - land!

It wasn't a rhetorical question. I know that Trinity College (Cambridge) own (or owned) a large number of freeholds in Ware, although I don't think this extends to Hertford.

I have come across a number of pieces of land owned by Lord Salisbury or what I think are his property management companies. In addition they also own ransom strips, small pieces of land that may prove valuable one day for reasons of access, etc.

I think its MacMullen's, certainly Fore Street and main roads in the Centre of Hertford, offices. I know Maidenhead Street is theres. Before the cafe at the end was there, there was an up-market ladies lingerie (that's pants to you lot!) shop, and they couldn't afford the rent to pay to Macs, so changed it to Doorstops cafe and then sold that to someone else and had a very successful undies business in Bishops Stortford, where Macs aren't!!! But I don't have official facts, perhaps our lovely Library can help. Queenie I don't think gets much of a look-in!!

And don't forget the various councils. Watch in the papers for how odd strips, 'wedges', etc, of land are under consideration for development over the next few years. The council will probably own a fair few of these. Also, McMullens have been looking into 'maximising their assets' (ooops, I mean flogging some land off). Note the Phase 4 developers sign up on the land in Cowbridge. And didn't McMullens own the land that was sold to develop the new estate off Beane Road a few years ago? And did they not also own the land sold off for the development on Brewhouse Lane? And what about........?
