Great event again yesterday, despite being renamed the Hertford Charity 9.3K for this year only (hope whoever forgot to unlock that gate got a good kicking [}:)]) Will any photos be appearing soon?

Thank you for your support - I was devasted when the gate hadn't been unlocked especially as I checked on Friday afternoon that it would be. I took quite a few photos and in a couple of days I will put a photo gallery on the website. I hope the incident with the locked gate hasn't put anyone off running again and the referee asked that we start on the footpath as it would have been too dangerous to have 430+ people trying to get through the narrow gap. Although one or two old hands said they would have hurdled over the gate!

I saw some of the runners coming in yesterday lunchtime; whoever decided to make the finish up Bullocks Lane must be some kind of masochist - I felt like stopping and offering people a lift! Well done to everyone who participated.

I obviously put the adrenalin of anger to good use as I did a great (for me) time - 4th in my category - but I can't really feel good about it as it wasn't the full distance. You must be gutted that all your hard work was undermined by this one oversight. Never again, sorry.

First of all, I would like to add my thanks to Linda for organising the run and to all those responsible for helping out from the staff at the beginning & end to the marshalls along the way. It was my first run, and I fully intend on entering again. Okay so there was a mess up at the start, but hey sometimes these things happen. I am sure Linda and the team team did all they could to rectify the situation but alas it didn't happen. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it is dead easy for people to criticise but it could not have been easy with all those people waiting trying to get the race going. Let's also not forget the primary purpose of the event, (there is a clue in the name), 'Hertford Charity Run' is a run to raise funds for Charity. One could see there were a number of 'serious' runners and fair play to them and indeed all those who took part, but is there really that much point in getting that up tight about 0.3k / 0.5k or whatever k it was. Life really is too short to get that hung about it. Linda, after all you efforts and hard work, it doesn't help getting comments like that. It really was a great event and from a novice runner, I fully look forward to next year. Many thanks

Hundreds of club runners paid their fees to enter and are entitled to expect a well-run 10 km race. Suggesting that 'life's too short to get hung up' about being sold short mocks the effort they put into their sport. If a race loses credibility, the elite runners and clubs won't bother with it and it won't make as much money for charity. These things don't run on hearty thanks alone - you need lots of punters paying cold hard cash and they won't come from miles around for a race that isn't efficiently organised.

We are looking to set up a Charity Fun Run in the county somewhere (very early stages), Do you have any advice on whats the best way, resources & time and money spent on setting up and running this event that you care to share? Thanks

Rachel, I too was slightly disappointed with the problems at the start but I think you're over-reacting - I thought the rest of the event was extremely well organised. Good route, well marshalled, a refreshing selection of drinks & food (I think supplied by tesco and waitrose) at the finish, and a goodie-bag (t-shirt and glass) for £8/£10 is a bargain. We also had a perfect Spring day for it - what's not to enjoy?

quote:Elite runners?!? I'm not sure what your definition of elite is, there are a handful of very good runners (2 runners at sub-35 10k pace - an excellent time; in my mind elite is sub-30). If clubs decide not to show up next year because it is 20 mins late and 400m shorter than normal then that is a shame, everyone I've spoken to enjoyed the day regardless. Many thanks to Linda and anyone else involved for a great day and if it's on again in the future I will certainly be attending.

Welcome to the forum Angus, look forward to reading your contributions on many topics in future [;)] FYI I'm not a club runner. I think the organiser's defenders would do better not keep bumping this thread but just let it go. No matter how wonderful the rest of the race was, the fact is, the start was a shambles and lots of strangers around me were getting annoyed about the delay and the absence of any information about it. Most people thought we had finally started when we were just being moved up the path; people were risking injury, barging through the tiny gap and scrambling over the gate to try to get ahead when in fact we hadn't started. Lots of people didn't give a monkey's about the delay or the route, that's fine, but I'm not one of them and I'm entitled to express my views on this thread. I'm glad so many people had a great time being active and raising funds for charity on a lovely spring day. [:)]

The only other local events I am aware of are the monthly nice2tri.com 5k's (which are good but small numbers so far) and the Ware-joggers 10-miler in October (a great race last year, although obviously this starts in Ware rather than Hertford). I was up near the front at the start and was not aware that people further back were under the impression the race had begun, that is a shame.
