As most of us are now aware that recycling in Hertford starts from the 2,Nov,09 and a leaflet has arrived telling us what goes in what bin, it just strikes me how these recycling schemes seem to start in the autumn because a person who lives near by thought they would be helpful and start early and started putting food stuffs in the brown garden waste bin as per the leaflet but missed the start date and this was about 3 weeks ago and what happened was the council have refused to empty it and it was crawling with maggots and this is why I think that we have a November start date because if it was summer then the amount of maggots we will find up every street will not be very nice as these bins are not fly proof and the smell must be sickening, so come next summer I think Hertford will have a plague of fly,s so please stock up on fly spray just incase.

Just remember not to let the council bully you over minor slip ups like putting the wrong thing in the wrong container. I have it on good authority (EHDC Waste Services Manager) that there is no law to force you to recycle, therefore any fines or threats of a fine for such a thing is unlawful.

I like the way they tell you how to put your recycling rubbish in the brown bin: food scraps at the bottom, then cardboard, then green/garden stuff (if memory serves). Are you supposed to save up all the bits separately then fill the bin 'correctly' on recycling collection day!!??

Has anyone else noticed that the drainage holes are not actually at the bottom of the blue box, but on the tops of the ribs that strengthen the base. The result of this (as I found out this morning) is that the channels in the bottom retain the water until you come to move the box when it promptly drains out on to your feet![:(!] Surely the council could have run to cost of a proper lid[?] After all it is our money they're spending!

I'm confused - The leaflet I have implies I can only receycle plastic which is shaped like a milk bottle. So does that mean no yoghurt pots, shampoo bottles, etc? Also, it says no waxed cardboard such as washing powder boxes which I would not have said was "waxed". So, does that mean no cereal boxes, pizza boxes, ready meal packaging, etc or anything like that then? They seem as "waxed" as a washing powder box to me. [?]

As I see it, waxed containers is things such as drinks cartons. I think it's bad that all we can recycle is plastic bottles. What are we suppsed to do with ready meal containers, yoghurt pots and other plastic items? Bottles probably forms a very small percentage of the plastic items we have for recycling, so the rest just goes in to landfill as I understand it

When are they due to collect the blue box? As mine is overflowing with empty water bottles, so much so that I can fit the other 3 indoors in it.

What about shampoo and shower gel containers - are they actually bottles? At the moment I am only saving my 2 pint milk containers (even though they are not classically bottle shaped either). Should I only be putting plastic coke/drink bottles in there? I'm so confused, it's tempting to give up and just squash my black bin down for collection every fortnight

Don't bother most of it goes to landfill anyway. About the only thing that reliably gets recycled is glass and all they do with that is grind it up and use it in hardcore for roads [}:)]

it's a good habbit to get into though; Because at some point the stuff will have to be recycled. So may as well get the process working now. Besides; Now there are only a pickup every 2 weeks, you pretty much have to recycle, otherwise your bin will be full and they dont take any more than a bin load each time!

As we approach week two I have relaised that the additional stuff I can recycle compared to pre-ARC days is actually minimal - a couple of bottles and some toilet roll tubes. So my black bin is going to be overflowing by the time next week comes. It is already more than half full but not due for collection until next week. I was already recycling all I could and I thought ARC would be ok as there was improved recycling - but the reality is that not much extra can be taken out of the black bin because of the restrictions on the type of cardboard and plastic. eh? in what way is it too late? By recycling we not only save the planet, and do what is morally required, but we also save our own money, because it's the council that pays the landfil tax. If we dont recycle, our council tax will go up more. It's inexcusable and downright lazy not to recycle, simple as that. Roll on the fines..

It says no "waxed or coated" cardboard and gives washing powder boxes as an example. What about all those shiny printed ready meal boxes and packaging - they are surely as coated as a washing powder box? I have e-mailed East Herts for some clarification on this and some plastic questions so I will let you all know if and when they reply.

The only food packaging that can only go in the black bin is those plastic food trays that supermarket meat comes in, yogurt pots which aren't bottle shaped, polythene wrapping and lids. You can take Tetra Packs to Van Hages, Sele Farm, Focus and anywhere else with the plastic recycling bins because they are collected there. Cardboard can go to Westmill or Cole Green Tip for recycling too. Actually the only difference to us now is that we don't have to store our cardboard for long periods in order to justify the trip up to Westmill with our excess recycling.

Here is the official and impressively prompt response from the Council - "Many thanks for your email. You can recycle any plastics in the shape of a bottle – as long as you remove the lids. The main value streams in plastic recycling are HDPE and PET bottles. These are established products to collect, which both have defined 'high value' and volume end markets. They are always made from the same material, regardless of the brand, and – due to the nature of producing the bottles in the first place – have a very tightly defined material product specification. Trays, tubs and other items will invariably not be of the same polymer type, and even if they were, they would be made from a different melt index flow. This means that the material will not be consistent, which is the absolute key in plastics processing. The only exception to cardboard recycling are those boxes that have a plastic coating, some of the large detergent boxes are lined because generally they are stored where their contents are exposed to damp and greeting cards (which often have sparkles and coatings) nearly all other cardboard is acceptable including cereal boxes, loo rolls etc if you are unsure tear it, if it has a plastic coating (cannot be torn) then place it in the black bin. In all this, the one action which is being ignored, is to buy less. We've been recycling for years, but it's always been only a partial solution. With the advantage of years of practice at careful shopping, our black bin rarely has more than one swing bin sized bag per week from a family of four. This leaves useful extra capacity for those exceptions (parties, decorating etc.).

Can foil & foil containers etc be put in blue box along with the cans. I know you couldn’t when the cans were place in the green box. Something to do with it clogging their machinery. I left some in a bag with the cans in the green box once and they left the whole bagful[:p] Any one know if it’s changed[?]

Lucky you I still have no Blue box! Obviously the reason to leave all the recycling then on my drive Monday morning even though all nicely seperated and but hey they did empty my brown bin (Which is full of leaves at the moment and has no room for any of the other recycling I am meant to stick in there!) Inconsistent experiences, it seems. With no instructions and no blue box, we left everything out on the normal day. The brown bin was emptied, as was the green one and the makeshift container of plastic that we put out. From this I calculate that, next week, I only need to put out the black bin.

Would someone please explain this thread to me. Makes no sense. Here on Folly Island we only have green and blue boxes which we place on our curtilage alternate Wednesdays. What are these tea caddys you are all on about? And a diary (dairy shurely). We put all out rubbish into black sacks; some prudent households still have lilac ones and even more frugal residents, orange ones. It gives the Island such a rush of colour once a week. These are collected every Thursday. It would be a wonderful boost to the reduction of CO2 and landfill tax if someone could organise a sort of recycling schedule; somewhere to deposit my PG Tips and corn flake boxes.

Our green caddys came in the blue box but as you don't have brown bins I am afraid you are sadly missing out on a whole new experience of being able to sort teabags and banana skins out with the cardboardand put it out with any food waste and garden rubbish..........colourd sacks? now thats a mystery to me if we put anything in sacks it won't get taken[:D]

Those orange bag are given out by the council for your normal black bin rubbish. We got a roll last year when the collection people took the lid off our black bin. When we asked for a replacement, the council drop a roll at our door step. The replacement black bin eventually arrive 6 months later !! I also got a impression that they are collected separately from the normal black bin. Strange.

I was annoyed last week when they collected my brown bin. I had cleared up the leaves feom my two huge apple trees and there were more than could fit in the bin, even after I got in nd jumped on them. So, i left them in a bag on top of the bin and tied the top. When they came to move the bin so they were all together, they left the bag behind. So, I went back out and moved it back on top of the bin. They very kindly emptied my brown bin and left the bag of leaves by the roadside. Bloody jobsworths!!

i'm all for recycling, but not for my dustbin becoming a health hazard (esp over the summer months). Would make much more sense to get a smaller black bin but maintain weekly collections. It'd still force people to recycle, but would prevent my children's nappies stinking out the street (and yes I know i could use reusable nappies, but i don't!)

Obviously the new system has been introduced as a result of a mixture of cost cutting and recycling obligations. I'm concerned about the fortnightly collections - not for myself, because I'm in the fortunate position of living in a household of two adults, but for other families, with children. My wife and I manage to fill the black bin easily over the period of a fortnight, despite the fact that we use all of the other 'recycling' bins & boxes PLUS a composter for vegetable waste. God knows how hard it must be for a family of four or five. I'm all for recycling etc, but this fortnightly collection idea is not good, as expressed perfectly by Bengeobabe and her nappies. It's a step too far. What if you miss a collection? Your waste in the black or brown bin will be festering for a month! A MONTH!!!! I'm hoping for a waste collection revolt [:)] What I don't quite understand is why Bengeobabe is so concerned about her nappies as her profile says she's in Bhutan - seriously smelly nappies!

We are a family of 4 too and we only fill 1 50l bin bag per week - and that is with all the plastic trays which can't be recycled. Oh and Not_Quite_So_Little_P's nappies (only one overnight) Littlest_P is in re-useable nappies.

I have just had the dustmen today who collect the brown bin and the green and blue box,s they have emptied the brown bin but have refused to empty the blue and green box,s that were just behind the dust bin and in an identical position to next door apart from the dust bin and even though there was plenty of room to access the box,s they have just plain refused to empty them, what a bunch of prima donna,s they are, I have email the operations dept today the first email at about 2.50 pm and again at 4.50 pm and no answer and I have asked them to either come and empty the box,s as they should have done or send some one out to show me where they would like me to place said box,s as my front boundry line is just the width of the path up to my front door, sorry but no xmas box from this address.

Try phoning rather than email - you never know if anyone is going to read the emails but talking to a human being is far more reassuring. Same thing happened to us the first week of the new system. I gave them a call to say the brown bin had been emptied but not the boxes. The operator said it would be dealt with by 4pm that day. OK, they didn't come that day but the boxes were emptied first thing the following morning. Sorted.

Hi the dustmen who were suppose to empty the blue and brown box,s did refuse to take them solely because of the position of the box,s the contents were correct and they emptied all the others in my street, I prefer to email these people rather than waste my time and money on the phone to them but saying that about 11.00 am today 10,Dec a very nice lady turned up either from the council or the operations dept and she had a look and agreed that the bins and box,s were in a fair position for collection and she thought it would be better if I swapped the bins for the box,s so the box,s would be the nearest to my boundry line to keep the prima donna,s happy who collect these box,s and then she took away my blue box which was full and replaced it with another blue box which I thought was very good of her. I just hope the other crew,s who collect the brown and the black bin,s do not have a tantrum when they see the new position of the bins and refuse to empty them, so now I will wait and see what they do over the next 2 collections, but they should have emptied these box,s from the position they were in as they were as near to my boundry as I could get them it was just the other bins that made them further from the boundry that they could have been but I am not going to start playing musical bins and keep swapping them around just to please some one who does not like doing his job, if I had ever refused to do my job my boss would have most certainly stuck my P45 in my hand and told me where the front gate was, there are plenty of unemployed people out there who would be quite willing to do this job, clealy this situation comes from very weak management and a bunch of jumped up prima donna,s.

Has anyone else found that their kitchen caddy gets pretty horrible and mouldy very easily? Its not very pleasant. I'd like to get some liners to go in it and have found on line you can get ones which are "biodegradeable" and "compostable". However, eastherts website specifically states that you cannot use compostable bags as the composter cannot take them?! Sounds crazy. Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the caddy in good and mould free order? (apart from emptying and cleaning it every other day of course)

Waitrose sell bidgradeable / compostible bags, which I have been using - didnt realise that you werent meant to use them! I know of other areas where the local council actively recommends using these bags - so why not in East Herts I wonder....
