H.R.C......

Herts Regional College or Herts Recreation Centre?? My Wife went to use the library at Ware College yesterday and came back bemused at what she found there: The Library (or now better known as the "Learning Resource Centre") plagued by thumping music coming from the canteen next door. Copies of Hello magazine (or some similar nonsense) provided by the college on all the tables. Pool tables...say no more. No lockers or anywhere secure to leave overcoats, bags etc. so they were spread all over the library. Computers galore but none, seemingly being used for study. Personal email and Facebook seemed de rigeur. The noise of the thumping disco music and people using mobile phones, in the library (sorry L.R.C.) no less, was so bad she gave up and brought the books home to get some peace and quiet. Oh yes, almost forgot. Nowhere to park a bicycle. Bit of a rant I know and i don't want to sound too much like an old git but this is supposed to be a place of learning not a recreation centre. What on earth are the management thinking of. Students don't need trendy teachers and surroundings. Peace, quiet and a disciplined environment surely would help these people advance. [?]

I've just completed a Masters at Anglia Ruskin University; the library there was similar to what you describe. I couldn't concentrate on writing my thesis for the chatting, phone calls and general noise, and was also lucky to get on a computer to actually do some work. Sadly, seems it's not an uncommon experience.
