Unless you have an amphibious vehicle, the nearest car parking is at the end of Marshgate Drive that leads through to the Common, then a 200 yard walk to the lock.

It's slap bang in the middle of the flood plain :-)...... thank God global warming is a myth. Don't think I'll be bidding. + there's no LEGAL way to get your car up there. + just think of all those people you'd have to say a cheery 'Hello' to, because they think you're the jovial lock-keeper. On the other hand, you could make a killing selling ice creams in summer and hot teas in winter. I think that one of the mains services isn't there yet - electricity?

Eleanor yes I do remember Bert and enjoyed a few beers with him on more than one occasion. He used to sit a the table now reserved for the pub landlord - particularly on Sundays when he'd bring his family down from time to time. I'm sure if the Hartham rumours (see KingsNM above) were around at the time Bert's laugh would have been heard many an evening; I don't think I've heard a 'dirtier' laugh in my life - he'd put Sid James efforts into the amateur league!!

good old bert,,always laughing,and joking,,with a dog end,,fag,,cigarette butt,hanging from his mouth,,mostly unlit,,used to have a chat with him ,mostly around his lock cottage,,we became good friends,for a number of years,,then after not running into him for a few months,,a mutual friend told me that he had passed away,,big C was mentioned

I remember that when the owners of the Barge (the Blacketts?) moved to a pub in Hertford Heath he started to drink there instead. But I did hear that he had died several years ago..
