Suger hut Noise

Has anyone noticed the noise from Sugar Hut has got worse? I live in St Andrews Street and noticed last night the music seemed louder than usual, i believe they have had an extension and new dancefloor so i dont know if this has anything to do with it! I am all for having a good time being a young girl myself but noise like that on a Thursday night is frustrating!!!!

I popped in last week and they were running a drinks promotion, £10 for any 6 drinks equating to about £1.50 for any drink. Pints of larger or Vodka and red bulls @ £1.50 I can see why the noise levels have increased. I didn't think the council were letting companies run these sort of promotions anymore ?

Could it be because they have the windows open in the warmer weather? Pressure from neighbours ensured that the White Lion has a clause in its license stating that all windows and doors must be shut when they've got live music. It makes a huge difference.

I see on their website that they've just opened a new dancefloor. Would this have anything to do with it?

Thanks for all your responses. I will email Chris Kitts at the council and see if we get any further, we rang the police at the time and they said they were going to send environmental health round. Maybe it does have something to do with the weather and having the windows open, maybe having them closed is in their lisence contract :-S

What time does this place close? I passed by there in a car at about 01.15 on Sunday morning and it appeared two bouncers were examining someone’s Id before letting them in!

Just following on from my topic i opened today regarding sugar hut and thursday nights!!! Sorry Admin i am unfamiliar with the site and couldnt find my old post! The problem has got worse and thursday night is the worst of all! Sugarhut seems to be doing deals on drinks and attracting quite a young crowd which coincidently seems to be causing trouble all over town. I have heard from the local papers that it is people from outside Hertford eg Hoddesdon and Broxbourne. Maybe a stronger police presence on these nights would help?

There was an article in The Mercury on this very subject a couple of weeks ago. The headline was "Bar neighbours set to demand a licence review", although the story only appeared to carry remarks from just one local resident. "Nicholas Lane resident James Morrison says residents living in his street , as well as Old Library Lane and Old Cross Wharf regularly have to endure noise, vandalism and find access to their homes blocke by patrons' cars." "Simon Grant, Sugar Hut Area Manager said he would he happy to meet residents." "A spokesman for East Herts Council said: "Residents are welcome to apply to have a licence reviewed and the case will be given careful consideration on it's own merits". So I would suggest that the local residents get together and have a chat with Mr.Grant and if nothing improves then apply to the council to have the licence reviewed. As is always the case with these problems, keep a diary of all the disturbances as this can be useful when dealing with both the proprietor and authorities.

Just to play devils advocate, my guess is the bar owner would reply that what people do after they leave his bar is out of his control. In my view he would have something of a point.

I don't think they can use that as their get out of jail free card. The behaviour of those leaving the premisies is taken into consideration when the license is reviewed.

Maybe, but they wouldn't be there causing a disturbance if the premises weren't there. Much depends on the conditions of their licence and whether they are in breach. Both Sky in Ware and the late Zero's provide us with examples of what can go wrong and how it can be dealt with.

The bar owner is just money making and may say it isn't his responsibility but if we didn't have these cheap drinks nights inviting people to get out of their faces and damage properties this might not be such an issue. They are supposed to have contact with the police at all times but who knows!! My main concern is the noise - maybe they need to adapt the same rule as stonehouse has with its windows being closed after 10pm!

The problem for us is the early morning noise from the louts leaving the premises and the regular trashing of gardens and fences and anything that they can throw at each other or in the river including bird tables and estate agent boards. The solution is really quite simple. More police in the area at that time and get the MP and Councillors involved too to put pressure on the Police to have a presence during the night. Hopefully the licence issue can be looked at if enough people complain. These people do make me sick. They might not have anything to get up for the following day but the rest of us need our sleep and we don't really want to hear young women screaching and men showing what limited vocabulary they have from 1am until 3am each Friday morning. This town is perfect in so many ways, it is just a shame that some of the people have nothing in their lives so they resort to mid week binge drinking and making club owners rich and themselves poor! Doh!

Had a friend in Sugar Hut on Thursday and apparently there was a mass fight inside that spilled onto the pavement, maybe this explains some of the noise. I'm surprised the council haven't done anything about all the drinks promotions they offer, £10 for 6 drinks and free drinks on Friday before 11pm. Hertford is a great town to live in and I enjoy regular meals out with the wife and I do not want to see it ruined by a few unscrupulous bars. Baroosh, The Snug, Deco and the Hertford House Hotel seem to run good business's without any trouble and all are nice places to have a few drinks with friends. I hope the right people get to grips with the problems that seem to be starting at Sugar Hut

The police have now put a sign up outside the premises asking people not to park in Old Library Lane or Nicholas Lane and asking customers to keep the noise down. Whilst the effectiveness of this might be arguable it does however demonstrate that the problem has been acknowledged.

As the local council has set a precident by revoking Zero's and Sky's license, where are they now on this issue? .. all seems a bit quiet in their quarter?

Both closures were supported by a wealth of evidence and came after the proprietors were given many warnings and opportunities to address the problems. It's not an overnight process. Sky had the conditions of their licence tightened in an attempt to deal with the problems there. However it wasn't until a year later that it became clear that this had not achieved the desired result and the licence was revoked.

Wouldn't a zero tolerance policy in these instances be less costly to the poor old tax payer? ...

This would depend on what the "poor old tax-payer" wants. This poor old taxpayer would not like to see the end of live music, of lively music venues, of entertainment beyond television. I would consider such a draconian approach to be a misrepresentation of my wishes. Running a club is never without compromise, however hard one tries, particularly since so many previously commercial town centres have been converted to residential flats. Tolerance of the needs of residents and businesses must both be considered. After all, both parties knew they were taking on town centre properties and presumably accepted the risks and limitations of their location. They are both taxpayers.

Not if it results in a legal challenge from the business concerned. Due process has to be followed when dealing with such issues and I doubt the council has the authority to adopt a "zero tolerence" approach.

Looks like we have a long wait then if it takes a year! Another sleepless night for us again last night. I contacted the police and was told that i cannot go to them with issues of noise, apprentley this right was taken away from them 2 years ago. They have given me a contact in environmental health so i guess this will be my next step. It's difficult to see if other residents are experiencing the same problems as our flat is on its own so you never see anyone that lives around you but i know there are flats closer than ours - surely they must have a disturbance too!

This is sad. Noise can be so hard to deal with, especially when you have disturbed sleep.. Its also hard as sound gets funnelled around in little towns like ours. Its very sad. I enjoy a good night out but you have to be considerate to other people and property. I hope a sensible resolution is found and that all parties get the result they deserve.

The Police are wrong on this one I am afraid. They have common law powers to intervene to prevent a breach of the peace and this is more likely if the noise is in the street rather than inside of the premises. You can also liaise with the Council's anti-social behaviour team and tell them you want them to consider an injunction under s.222 local government act 1972 or a closure order. Both the police and the council have adequate powers to deal with this and it is of course easier to pass the buck. Failing that, if the police or the Council don't bother to do anything write to their lawyers and tell them you are considering judicial review proceedings for their failure to intervene.

I have received a pack from the council to record noise and any disturbance which may occur for a two week period, this was through complaining to environmental health. I urge anyone having the same problem to do this. I didn't know there were meetings taking place - does anyone know how i can find out when and where they are?

I have to agree with the majority in this thread. I live in the house where the roadworks are on Cowbridge (that's another story!!) and the noise we experience on Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights can be horrendous. I'm all for people having a good time, the majority of the Fri/Sat nights I'll be out but it is so frustrating to be woken up 2/3 times a night by drunken idiots picking up cones, shouting down them, throwing them and moving the signs around and dumping them in the river. On a related note to noise, is anyone else getting increasingly frustrated by those two young lads going round on their scooters/mopeds at all hours? Not only are they noisy but they have a habit of driving about an inch from the cars bumpers in front goading them...

On Saturday night/early Sunday morning at about 2:30am my partner was woken by shouting in the street and when he looked outside the bedroom window there was a group of lads who were daring each other to kick people's car wing mirrors. My partner saw them kick one before running off. They were obviously drunk and incapable of knowing right from wrong. We have reported it. Unfortunately shouting in the street and disgusting behaviour like this is now a regular weekend occurrence along our road - we live in Port Vale. It puts you off going out and doesn't make for a comfortable nights sleep when you are worried about the safety of your car/house. Perhaps a heavy police presence for a few weeks, arresting those who are drunk and disorderly is needed?

Mikol - i am with you on the moped noise....they seem to find it amusing to tear up and down the streets during the day and in the middle of the night, weaving in and out of cars and coming close to knocking over pedestrians. Why oh why do they have to rev those things so much - not like they have a £50,000 sports car!!! The noise from sugar hut during the night and after kick out is a joke and has got worse and worse. If you haven't already i would advise you to contact environmental health as i have, i think the more complaints the better. They are really helpful and i have an officer looking after my case, i think they have quite a few complaints together now so the more the better. It's these cheap drink deals that are causing all the problems in the first place...as long as they are drinking and giving the owner lots of money - he couldnt careless about what goes on in the street!

Hannah you're right, the only reason people leave in such a mess are the drinks offers they promote, Thursdays are the worst as £10 for 6 drinks is a joke. I know someone who works there and some people buy three of the wrist bands at once 18 drinks for £30 is going to make anyone roudy. All the council need to do is stop these silly promotions and the local residents will see an immediate relief from all the disturbancies and broken nights sleep.

Got the usual 1:45am~2:00am alarm call last night. It always seems to gravitate to the males roaring largely incoherent chants along the lines of 'youwhat youwhat youwhat fagger youfaggof fagof' at the top of their voices, and the females responding by, well, just generally screaming as loud as they can. From an animalistic point of view, it's all very in touch with the rutting season - although in decibels it trumps the muntjacs and foxes. There were also the predictable 'burn-outs' by a couple of cars: rev your engine at full bore for a while, dump the clutch and then see how long you can keep your wheels spinning. Amusingly, just after the second incident of these last night there was the 'weeeeeeooow' of a police siren that sounded like it might just have rolled up behind the perpetrator. So all very exciting. Until the alarm went off this morning, of course :-)

You also get anti-social driving mayhem. Walking towards Bengeo just past the library last night, some p**t shot across the road right in front of me at the entrance to Mac's Training Centre, did a rapid reverse, and then drove back towards Sugar Hut and parked on the pavement. He also had a mobile phone tightly clasped to his ear throughout.

Why should people have to move home because trashy people get drunk, urinate everywhere and fight and smash up people's property? You are what is wrong with this country right now, the bullies are protected whilst the innocent feel victimised.

Just because its a town centre and people get drunk doesn't make some of this behaviour acceptable! I've lived here all of my life and been drunk in town on numerous occasions and sometimes behaved badly myself. What I've never done is openly urinate in the street/shop doorways, smash shop windows, vandalise cars, abuse/bully others and generally make residents lives hell just because 'I' have had a good night out. To say it is acceptable just because it is a town centre is beyond belief! I remember chatting to some women on a night out in Hertford about ten years ago who were from North London and asked them why they came here when there was so much else to offer much nearer to them - they told me it was because it was safe and they didn't get harassed - that is they could enjoy their night out. I don't think that's the case any more for Hertford and its becoming a magnet for trashy kids with a few quid in their pocket who think they can behave this way and go un-checked. To counter this view I have to say that I welcome the vibrancy of the night life as during the day the town has little to offer and this is keeping Hertford alive. The problem, in my opinion is keeping the balance and maintaining Hertford as a safe and enjoyable night out/in for ALL to enjoy.

I await with baited breath the opportunity of trying to run over the clubbers who stumble about the pavement on Friday nights as I try not to run them over like skittles! Oh joy of joys.. When I go out I like to enjoy myself, not end up in hospital.. is that me being odd????

To be fair, it's become a residential area. For many years it was predominantly commercial. Otherwise, [^]

Did anyone see the length of the queue of those wanna be WAGS and football players trying to get into the Sugar Hut last night??? Must have been some re-opening! Seeing how many of them were dressed for the evening, I'm surprised the emergency services weren't called out to treat them for hypothermia! [}:)]

does anyone know if the paper Police notices stuck to the lamposts in the side street next to the library mean that you can't park there even after 6pm? If so, are they actually legal? I have to keep a beady eye out for a traffic warden or cop car now every time I take my daughter to the library in the evening after nursery.

As far as I know they are nothing more than polite requests

Ive been told that the age limit on Friday's has now been dropped to 18 from the previous 21 , not sure if this is true , but if so it shows how worried they are about their reputation , not at all it seems . Apparently it is still 21 on Saturdays .

See Sugar Hut have had their hours extended on Saturday untill 4am. I am surprised the police have allowed this as I was always led to believe the problem with later opening hours is getting people home. Can't see many taxi's being available at 04.00 on Sunday morning.

Surely not. That will drive the home owners mad. They won't get any sleep on a Saturday night/Sunday morning.

I can see that their Halloween event runs until 4am but can't find anything that says it will be 4am every Saturday. Edit: They have a temporary extension to their licence for that night only.
