Funnily enough we called them on Sunday to book a table for lunch. Sadly only got a machine (though they did call back after we had left) so we finished up going to the Plume of Feathers. That wasn't bad either and perfect cycling distance from Hertford.

A nice pub, but the garden's a bit tiny. It's the starting point for one of my favourite walks, although like many places locally it seems to suffer from low flying small aircraft on balmy summers afternoons. I'm yet to see Lewis Hamilton in there, perhaps he's a Plume of Feathers man.

I agree with the small garden comment, though the pub has used the external space to their advantage; maximising the much put-upon smoking clientele that, elsewhere, has significantly impacted the pub trade. If anyone likes a smoke with their pint then the Rose & Crown appear to have used the brick wall surroundings of their side entrance as a very effective sheltered area whilst not breaking the legislative restrictions. There is a smoking community, well sheltered and able to drink comfortably whilst not impacting those of us who prefer not to inhale. Mid-week, I counted 15 smokers, comfortably perched permanently outside - a drinking population not to be sniffed at in the current climate. In addition, there were more customers inside having eating or just drinking. This pub appears to be thriving. If you want a view then the village green is directly opposite and increases the feeling of external space. Those who enjoy the pastel green doors reported elsewhere on this forum will enjoy the internal pastel decor. Most importantly, the IPA and Abbot is commendable and drinkable. Downside, for me, are the TV's displaying football (just not my thing) and I did prefer the pre-pastel decor for sitting in front of the open fire in winter. Though these are not sufficient to cry out "avoid". I have not experienced the food of late though note that the current menu extends to more than a ploughmans or ham sandwich and appears family friendly. Certainly the pub is family friendly and was one of the first that the little Woody's visited.

As I live in Tewin perhaps a bit biased but the food is well priced good honest pub food. Certainly my parents enjoyed it recently and gave it the thumbs up. Incidentally, I notice the Plume of feathers has revamped their menu over the last few months and brought their prices down too - possibly to compete with the Rose & Crown. Had a good meal there too a few weeks ago.
