Seems to be a very strong pirate radio station (94.3 ish fm) in the Hertford area wiping out Radio 4 from the Bengeo area. I don't think it will last too long with the over modulation. Time to put the hood up and go tracking [:D]

They're calling themselves SkyFM and they're on 94.2 (I get Radio 4 on 93.5). I heard an advert for a club in East London so I wonder if they're London based and it's just atmospherics boosting their signal.

A mate and I have found them! The transmitter is in the most stupid, irresponsible place going. Not sure where the studio is yet but we have a good idea. I'm not sure I should say where it is but the owners of the building have been informed.

Shall I blow their little secret wide open? As Hertford has more then it's fair share of ex pirate engineers it was a dead cert that their rig site would be found quickly. But I must admit even I was surprised at where they managed to install it, although it was very easy to find [:D]

I don't really know how they got up there, but not so many years ago tower blocks in London were accessed using standard keys (fb1, fb2 ect) which were carried by the fire brigade for emergency access to service floors and lift shafts. I dare say its all changed now but it's not always as difficult as it seems. How we found it? First off the transmitter had to be close, the average fm land pirate will use a transmitter of no more then 200 watts output. When within a mile or so of such a transmitter most radios will produce an image of the fundamental both above and below the output frequency (hence the Radio 4 interference). These images were present both in lower Bengeo and Sele Farm, a couple of phone calls revealed a weak signal in Welwyn Garden yet a moderate signal 11 floors up in Enfield. A fair assumption given the radiation pattern was that the transmitter was in the valley somewhere between the extreme north of Hertford and Ware. The transmitter aerial, which is fairly obvious to the average radio anoraks eye, was spotted up top the hospital building. A quick drive around the hospital and a wander up the stairs within with a signal meter confirmed it was the site. Anyway it's been busted and the aerial has just been removed, so that's it, for the time being at least.

Seems to still be a problem "Unknown FM" trasmitting on 90.4 seems to inetefere with Radio 1. Signal strong at the top of Welwyn Road but disappears if you head into Sele Farm Also there does look to still be a dipole on the hospital.

Unknown FM is in North London but always put a good signal out this way. There is another (official) dipole mounted to the wall towards the rear of the hospital building which I've been told is some kind of backup ambulance communication. The pirate one was taped to a vent tube towards the front edge. Maybe they have decided to chance another install, I'll have a look over the weekend.
