I seem to remember a similar thing with Threshers before... A 'mistake' was made whereby a downloadable and printable voucher offering 40% off, meant only for staff, got into the public domain just before Christmas. Threshers made a really big thing about this but stated that through 'goodwill' they would 'honour' all vouchers! Threshers prices are approx 30-40% higher than Tescos! But, thinking they were getting a real bargain through a mistake made by the company, a lot of people downloaded the voucher and did all their Christmas booze shopping at Threshers![}:)] Hmmmm, clever.

quote:So if you take 40% off the Thresher price, you're considerably better off than if you'd bought at Tesco. What's more some fine old manufacturers stay in business, and people keep their jobs, due to not being so vulnerable to Tesco's "sell it to us for nothing" bully tactics.

I couldn't get my champagne anywhere cheaper and believe me, I looked. This particular brand wasn't available in Tesco and all other places I checked were at least £3.00 a bottle dearer. I used the voucher on Tuesday night at the Ware branch. Even if Tesco had been able to match the price, I wouldn't shop there.

yawn, yawn, bash Tesco, yawn yawn.b-o-r-i-n-g Stay on topic please. It's a good competitive deal from Threshers, just makes you realise what their profit margins are when the prices go back up......

I interpreted the quote from Norah that you reference as "whatever Tesco does, I wouldn't shop with them" That is just Tesco bashing and not really pertinent to the discussion IMHO. You'd think we were talking about Satan rather than a successful BRITISH company that is the largest private employer of people in the UK today - and in the current economic climate, it honestly p***es me off that people think it is fashionable to run them down. Facile arguements about beating suppliers and food quality and undercutting opposition are merely a reflection of the demands of the public it serves, otherwise they (and the other major food retailers) would not make money, it doesn't after all grow on trees or just walk in through the door. I've confessed before to the mortal sin of being a former employee and a shareholder (and I enjoyed my time there very much), and until a couple of years ago occupied a senior post in another Hight Street retailer, so I feel qualified to have an opinion. What is a crying shame that 27,000 employees and their families are worrying and facing uncertainty about christmas because they worked for a much loved but unprofitable company aka Woolies who fundamentally didn't give Joe Public what they wanted until they reduced it by (up to) 50% Who's gone off topic now, oops

quote:In your haste to defend Tesco, you misinterpreted my quote. I actually said if Tesco had matched the price, I wouldn't shop there. The very fact that I had checked Tesco prices out should flag up the fact that I am not totally averse to shopping in Tesco. However, I do try to support our town centre shops and if they offer a better price or service, what possible excuse have I got for shopping with Tesco?

quote:I take your point, but you also might accept that Tesco is no less immune from critism and is likely to come up often, due to it's shear size. People may also choose not to shop there, in my case because of poor quality and high prices, not because of some right-on protest. It's margin in Uk is 5.8% and 6% overall, by the way. That is higher than many of it's smaller competitors and supports the claim that it's advertised leaders are often financed by squeezing hard pressed suppliers. Though a large employer, it is a retailer and for the economy as a whole, the suppliers jobs are of greater value. For every job at Tesco, others are lost and the result is a movement of wealth and control from the rest of UK to Tesco. Good if you are a shareholder. Bad for everyone else, particularly in a falling market. I also spent many years in retail and there is also a former Tesco senior employee in the household. NOW we're of topic![:D]

quote:Yes. Bog standard Piper H cost me £17.99 I have no doubt Threshers came out on top - it's the old "Coke and Fries" technique. Whilst in there I bought some wine which I had no idea of comparative prices for, and some jelly pizzas which were not included on the offer! However, if you are shopping for like-for-like, it's definitely worth researching. (And I do love jelly pizzas...)

Shunt, I agree and if you look at my posting history you'll see that the state of the Hertford and Ware Tesco stores really bother me. I'm a critic of poor quality & service and we are very poorly served locally in terms of supermarkets. I'd just like to see the incumbent improve their game and if the stimulus were proper competition fair play. If I could get you a non-wheat baguette that wasn't mouldy from Hertford I'd be a happy man[:D] Much of my early career was invested in deriving the margin that you talk about through business systems and process improvements, gaining competitive advantage using IT, so price cutting and sexy marketing are a contributor but not the full picture. Yes, Tesco employs many near minimum wage staff, but also funds very highly paid professional staff in Herts who fuel our local economy. Tesco is not about just the local supermarkets....there are Distribution Centres, Training Centres, Head Office buildings and Leisure facilities locally that create meaningful wealth and value locally, not to mention the charitable work that the numerous Tesco functions raise locally. Does anyone remember what happened when British Aerospace (the last major Herts employer) left Hatfield 15years ago......?

quote:Right now Piper H is £17.82 at Tesco wine direct (although you must buy 6). The supermarkets change their offers very regularly (some run for only a few days) so, one week it can be a bargain then a few days later it’s back up in price again. For example Piper was only a few weeks ago at Sainsbury’s available for £15 a bottle (and Mumm too). On Threshers: I think the 40% off offer is just pure marketing spin and not a fantastic offer at all since the prices charged in the first places start very high indeed. I buy quite a lot of fizz every month and it pays to shop around. It is very unusual that a high street off-license comes out tops (for me, and what I order, it has never some out tops). Personally, I recommend Majestic Wine – good selection of Vintage and NV and they’ll deliver to you house/work. The only down side is you need to pay for 12 bottles (but you can mix the case so it doesn’t have to be just Champagne). As a tip if you buy from a supermarket online there are always voucher codes to be found on the internet knocking more off the cost. Additionally, most will take 5% off when you buy 6 bottles in store. Just some current price comparisons: Threshers charge £38.99 for Veuve (£25.99 if you buy 3), Sainsbury are selling it right now for £24.73 per bottle; £23.99 at Oddbins. Threshers charge £54.99 for Tattinger (£36.66 if you buy 3), its £29.99 at Majestic if you buy 2 and at Tesco its £31.54 a bottle and at Oddbins its on offer at £21.99 a bottle. Lanson Black Label is £18.91 at Tesco wine direct (you must buy 6), its £19.90 in store. Threshers charge £29.99 (£19.99 if you buy 3). Mumm is £18.89 at Tesco wine direct (buying 6), its £19.90 in store. Threshers charge £31.99 a bottle (£21.33 if you buy 3). Personally, I’ll shop wherever it’s the cheapest. I’m all for supporting town centre shops but at the same time I have my mortgage to pay and so shops need to compete on price. Someone mentioned the quality of service and to be honest if I’m buying a bottle of X champagne and I know what I want then is walking in to Threshers and getting “3 bottles of Mumm please” any different to the service I would get say at Tesco and picking them up off the shelf? If I want something new then I see the value in service quality and personally Threshers is wholly thrashed by Oddbins for the expertise of their staff. They seem to employ enthusiastic and knowledgeable wine lovers and not just a shop assistant that works in a place that sells wine. hic [:o)]

Avarice, I'd agree that, normally, Oddbins is the place, especially for champagne. However, on those figures and with the 40% off, Threshers is the cheapest of all the examples given which do not involve multiple purchases, with the exception of Veuve.

*taps away at calculator* Apologies – that is correct they are marginally cheaper but as you say not on Veuve or Tattinger. Just shows how high their prices are usually that with 40% off they are just competing. Their starting price of £31.99 for Mumm NV – wow. [B)]
