Hertford has a good range of pubs of differing types. Beer:-best at old cross tavern or white horse (Woodman at chapmore end is good too, also the Barge(can be duff on odd occasions) sportsman, and the Hillside sometimes has a good pint I think? McMullens beer is I'm afraid not very good unless you get one of their special brews. Children:- er.... Trendy :- Baroosh but dress code limits amount of clothing allowed..and who'd queue to get into a pub(bar) there are others but I'm not trendy so... Friendly:- Old cross tavern, Great Eastern special mention:- Saracens head..bad service music at blackbirds was good last saturday..if your an old git like me anyone got more info [:)]

We were made to feel very welcome at the Black Horse a few weeks back. A very mild Saturday afternoon, the town felt like it was just waking and after a good walk the pub was just right.

To use your categories, Wingnut....... Beer: OXT and the White Horse. The White Horse has a cracking porter in at the moment. I don't understand McMullens.........I want them to go off at a tangent and concoct something out of the ordinary. Children: I'm frequently told that the Millstream is very friendly but have never tried it with our son. Again, the Black Horse was good. Trendy: What? Me? I like Baroosh but don't like having to shout at to be heard by the person next to me. I had a look in No. 11 today and will try it out. Friendly: OXT, Salisbury.

Yeah, Salisbury..have some of the best, most friendly staff i've encountered. only been to millstream twice without kids. Barge would be good( for kids) if they ditched the carpark or had secure fencing..I like Woodman kids have large area to play in Rabbits play equipment etc.

The Ram looks absolutely horrible and uninviting from the front. However, the staff and the atmosphere on some nights (weekdays) is fantastic, really friendly. The landlord comes from Cape Town, and I think was a professional golfer, but got a back injury. I don't know about the beer, but I haven't heard my husband complain about it, so it can't be bad, because he does complain a lot. I do not however, recommend it for the weekend, where a completely different set of people seem to be in it, and it isn't very good. We also go to the Old Cross Tavern, which again I prefer during the week.... and the Hertford Club, which is ideal if you want a drink and a chat. And yes, you've guessed it, I am very, very trendy.[:D]

I'm glad someone mentioned The Ram as it usually gets forgotten due to it's frontage. Can't speak highly enough of the people who run it. We had some German friends stay there a couple of years ago and they absolutely loved it.

I did suggest a morning meeting at No 11 because that's where Hertbeat are doing their early morning live broadcast from on Christmas Eve but I think I can honestly say that at some time over the holiday season I shall be having one or two pints in the Old Cross Tavern. Nice to put some faces to names if you are in same place at same time.

I think it would be a better idea to have a post Christmas, during the week, Hertford Online drink, so that the pubs are not too busy, and I recommend the Old Cross Tavern on a Monday. It is very quiet then.

It doesn't alter the fact that it is a top quality establishment with a price to match, and I for one can't afford to eat there all the time. And with a new baby on the way, money is a bit tight. The beer prices aren't cheap but they are certainly comparable with some other establishments.

I can go with the Hillside getting onto a forum on restaurant reviews, and I must admit the extensive publicity is getting me to want to go the Hillside FOR A MEAL, I am totally convinced it is fabulous and delicious food etc., I thought this forum was about the 'Best Pubs in Hertford'...... the Hillside is not a pub, therefore all discussions should be strictly restricted to pubs. Or should we talk about the Hillside on the Cinema forum as well!!!! [:(!]

I haven't been to The Hillside since it opened in its new format but I think it has retained the bar area. I think it functions a both bar and restaurant. Can anyone confirm this?

I think this went a little off topic. It started off as a topic about the best pubs in Hertford and then the subject of a Forum drink was mentioned for which Justin offered his establishment. I thought that was a good offer,...........especially as I think he'll do us a deal on a tab and free nibbles!

The Hillside must be that one on Port Hill, right? Sorry I don't get to Hertford much these days but grew up there. Trying for the life of me to remember what it was called in my youth (mid-70's.) I used to frequent it even though I was under age (tut tut!) Can anyone jog my memory??

I was in the White Horse last week when the chimney caught fire. How we laughed. I'm still coughing up soot. Still think it's the best pub in Hertford.

The worst pub in Hertford, now there's a thought. I don't think there is a worst pub... they all seem to gear themselves to different sets of people. I would put the Salisbury back bar as one of the smokiest pubs in Hertford, and for my money it makes it one of the worst pubs. I will be glad when it is banned, as an ex smoker, I can accept how truly antisocial it is!!!!
