Local Village Gastro(ish) Pubs 2008
A topic last mentioned in 2005 by Victor Meldrew ([url="http://www.hertford.net/yoursay1/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=801&whichpage=1"]see here[/url])
Can anyone recommend a good country/village/gastro(ish) pub for an evening meal? Would like to take guests somewhere nice.
Mention in a few places of "The Baker Arms, Bayford" anyone been there recently? I could do with some other recommendations too.

cowper arms in letty green. i secodn the george and dragon.
also 5 horseshoes in little berkhamstead - stunning! and they have really good set meal offer on at the moment. They also had some tasting nights, but missed those, doh!

The Fox and Hounds in Hunsdon is excellent as is The White Horse in Wareside - roaring fires and a friendly welcome [:)]

Some others you may wish to sample:
The Farmers Boy, Brickendon (renowned for quality ales eg Timothy Taylor's Landlord) and local produce (eg Foxholes Farm beef).

Sow & Pigs, Thundridge (Serves a good pint of Adnams and a full plate of well cooked food).

The Tilbury, Datchworth (I've not eaten here though have it on the "intend to" list based on recommendation - I seem to get as far as The Plough over the road and get trapped by the best IPA for miles around to be had there).

Alternatively, not really a pub, you might wish to consider Tewin Bury Farm. Recently refurbished with "ambience".

I can second the George and Dragon at Watton - try the G&D Smokey - smoked haddock, melted cheese and tomatoes in a pot served with salad and toast - it's the nicest pub meal I've ever eaten; all my family get it every time!!

I can highly recommend the Fox and Hounds at Hunsdon. Every time I've eaten here it has been superb. The steaks are always top notch, among the best I have ever tried (including places in New York). It is a little pricey but I think you get what you pay for, the wine list is also very good !! [:D] [:D]

Oooh, yeah! They've replaced the Hillside for us. Not in the same league[:)] but finding somewhere close by that we can have a nice meal in pleasant surroundings.
They have a "bin-end board" for wines which is a great idea for variety. Their specials are good, the only thing that let them down was a rather dull cheeseboard.

Although a fair trip out, Welwyn seems to have more than its fair share of decent places to eat, I'll list the ones I've tried, in no particular order.
The Wellington, varied menu excellent service
The White Hart, silver service but friendly and good food
The White Horse, THE place to go for Sunday roast, booking advised
The Stable Door, Their breakfasts are excellent
Aqua, Italian, noisy, plenty of atmosphere may want to go "Mob Handed" to make yourself heard.
There is also an Indian restaurant but as I don't care for Indian food I can't comment.
At the top of the hill there is a pub called "The Steamer" which also operates a Chinese restaurant, but I've never been.

I would say Welwyn is very local myself , dont be scared of Admins zealous ban of all talk outside the Castle Walls . [;)]
