Does anyone know who owns the cattle grazing on the field that the public footpath goes through please?

Possibly Abel Smith, although I am not sure that the family estate travels that far from Watton-at-Stone. If there is is a public footpath there, try ringing Countryside Access at Herts County Council. They helped me recently with land ownership issues near Harpenden where some horses were being treated poorly and I was able to get in touch with the owner. Failing that, land registry at Stevenage (01438 788888), available on the net too. Will cost you a fiver or more to find out though. Why are you asking by the way?

I am planning to walk through there at night with a large group of people with dogs and torches. I am worried about causing them to panic. They are fine during the day but they might spook at night, so I thought I'd ask the owners' opinion.

Nora, I was running along the river path at Waterford one Saturday morning in October last year when I became aware of a commotion over towards the bridge under the railway. A guy was walking with two dogs off the lead. A collie was walking to the owner's heel, but the bigger dog was chasing the cattle. Two or three of the livelier ones turned on the dog & it's owner & before long a group of about 10 bullocks were trying to attack the big dog. The owner was having trouble fending them all off on his own so I ran over to help him by trying to distract them whilst he got the dogs back on a lead. There was an uneasy truce with the cattle walking behind the man & his two dogs. When I thought it had calmed down, I walked slowly away & then started to slowly jog back towards Vicarage Lane. The next minute two bullocks were charging towards me - the river was directly behind me & I suppose I could have jumped in as it's not that deep. Despite being absolutely petrified, I stood firm, waved my hands around & screamed at them & they backed off, but they still followed me all the way to Vicarage Lane. Since that incident, I have always had a healthy respect for the cattle over there & I always try to give them a wide berth, or stop & walk past them - if you have to go across the marshes in the dark, make sure all the dogs are on a tight leash & take a towel in case you need to take a midnight dip!

Thanks, Muddy. I also have a healthy respect for cattle, especially when you are with dogs as you read so many tragic cases of people being trampled. I walked through in broad daylight last weekend, with a dog, and the cattle didn't bother with us at all, even though we approached them. But I think it's probably wiser to take a different route at night.

Are they young heifers or steers? Heifers can seem scary with their up-close-and-personal curiosity which is exacerbated by their sheer size and not to forget feet like sharpened industrial presses, but steers can be aggressive little blighters; I second Muddy's experiences. Scaring them at night time is a high probability and personally I wouldn't want to get too close to them![:)]

I walked through Waterford Marshes yesterday and encountered the cattle. They are evil bastards. They stood there trying to stare me out. Fortunately I am made of good English stock and purposely strolled through the intimidating throng. I changed my pants shortly after

Have you tried saying Moooove over? But seriously if these cows have horns be careful as even female cows have been known to gore the odd farmer or two!
