Here are two comments made to me about Hertford in the past week. They were from different people. 1) Hertford is the Soho of Hertfordshire. 2) Ware is the new Hertford. Interesting...........personally I would stick with Hertford.

I know there's an "establishment" in Ware High Street but I've not heard of one in Hertford. Or is this not what was meant by "Soho"?

Sorry to disappoint you Steve. The comment was made to me by another member of the forum who has the pleasure of a walk through town early every Saturday and Sunday morning. I believe the term he used was, "the place is awash with vomit and used condoms". I never knew of an 'establishment' in our locality! The second comment was made by an ex work coleague of mine who is a regular at many Hertford dens. Indeed, I believe you would recognise him. He has taken to the occasional jaunt to Ware of a Friday evening in place of Hertford........perhaps the 'establishment' is better known than I think!

Strangely enough the subject of a certain establishment in Ware cropped up in the course of a conversation in the OXT. My friend tells me that he made his excuses and left. On a more serious note there is a conversation thread amongst town traders surrounding the scenario that might happen if other East Herts towns follow Hertford's lead and open more and more bars/restaurants/pubs. Not just Ware but WGC for instance could become the new Hertford leaving us with a declining evening trade, empty premises and no way of enticing retailers back into the town centre.

Whilst I couldn't disagree with you Joby this fear was borne out of three or more impending license applications at the old tyre shop, Your Move and the Job Centre. If these open as bars etc and then fail who will be ready in the wings to take them over. Not my views but passing on what i hear.

Well i may be naive here in the wiles of town planning, but isn't the answer to refuse the license application in the first place and try and get some real businesses in there?

As far as I'm aware, licencing applications are judged on a person's suitability to be licenced, it's not a commercial procedure.

I thought "lack of need" was also grounds for refusal. Lets face it, the last thing Hertford needs are more bars and restaurants.

There are certain societies in town (not the secret type that meet in tunnels) who are trying to lobby the relevant licensing bodies into introducing a policy to govern how licenses and licenased premises are sanctioned. That there should be a licensing policy to control the proliferation of bars etc and hopefully free up more properties for retail etc. But see Steve's comment above.

I thought it was not just about licensing but that a lot of the properties in question also require change of use. Surely this needs to be authorised and there must also be both rigid criteria to be met and an ability to fit in with a town plan. Tell me there is a plan.

Town plan? Is this like the "plan" for the development of the area to the East of the town? [:D]

If there was a plan why would there be 25 or so hairdressers in town!

I believe that's historical. There's a royal charter dating back to the days of Henry IV stating that there must be a minimum number of hairdressers in the county town.
