Does anyone have any experience of vets in Hertford. I've always been very happy with Chestnut but their prices seem to have increased in the last year and I was particularly suprised by the cost of 14 antibiotic tablets- £43.93 including VAT. If I could get a prescription I could get them for £24.48 inc VAT and postage online so there's a hefty margin in the vet's prices!

Ask the vet for the prescription then buy online. We were paying £60 a month for tablets and we found an online supply for £35, when we told the vet and asked for a prescription they matched the online price [:D]

Forgot to say[:I], the vet will charge for the prescription (not sure how much these days) but you have every right to buy the medication from any licensed outlet you choose.

We were rather surprised at the cost of vets fees after not having a pet for a few years. We reccommend insurance now...! We're with Chestnut vets and have always found them very good with the cats, even the screeching neurotic one. Their emergency call out at 9pm on Christmas day two years ago was very swift though, understandably we did have to go to the Ware site, but as the vet was driving over from Potters Bar it was the least we could do! Their after treatment care was very good, a little too good if honest, and the check up on the check up was cancelled as I couldn't for the life of me understand why the little tyke needed a check up as he was back to his normal, rambunctious self. I did discuss it with the vetnery assistants before cancelling, though. Overall, v pleased.

We are with Chesnut and are very happy with the care there. However we are currently spending £28 per month on prescriptions (for the rest of cats life). Is there an online store that is particulary recommended. bit scared of the unknown!!!

we have a long-haired cat who constantly gets his fur matted. We can normally cut the knots out before they get too bad, but when our daughter arrived last September, he got really bad. I had to take him to the vets, Chestnut, who charged me over £90 to knock him out and shave his fur on his belly. It must have taken them less than 10 mins - I shave my head every week so know how long it takes. They must be rolling in cash.

When we got our cats last year from the rescue centre The Scatching Post, near Cheshunt, they directed us to a vet in Nazeing for a free second vaccination that was already set up. We decided to stay with them because they are caring, cheap and only 15 minutes away by car. In comparison to Chestnut, probably half price for most things. We were there last night because one of our cats, it turns out, has gastroenteritis. Consultation, one week course of antibiotics, plus one week course of drugs to improve digestion, total cost £48. If you think this is a cheap and nasty back street type of practice, they come recommended by the local rescue centres and we had to wait for four kittens to be checked out which had been brought in by the Cat Protection League. The practice is called Vets and Pets and they are on the Nazeing Glass industrial site which is just a minute or two past Broxborne Railway Station. 01992 478657.

The main vet at Vets & Pets has a menagerie of animals living at his house with his family and he offers good advice with no such thing as a daft question. We were given a quality animal carrier (suitable for small dogs, cats or rabbits) free. The spanish vet at Medivet is equally friendly and she will gladly give advice also.

Hi has anyone over the last few years had a dog neutered at the local vets here and some months later found a lump on their dog and at first it looks like a cyst but later it gets bigger and it turned out to be cancer because I had two dogs done a few years ago and this happened to both of them, perhaps just a coincidence or perhaps something else?
