Any WWII RAF air crew in Hertford?
This has been mentioned in a thread in the Leisure and Entertainment section, but I thought it might be worth a fresh topic in Aviation.
If there are any WWII RAF air crew in the town who fancy reliving some memories and getting airborne again and flying into Shuttleworth (Old Warden) and meeting up with fellow servicemen, please email me and I'll try to match people up with current pilots for this event. I'd like to be able to give something back to local people who flew for us during World War II:

Do bear in mind that some WW11 air crew associate flying in prop planes with being shot at and most will be quite elderly now. You might get the odd refusal.

I see your point, shunt, but we just want to let people know that the opportunity is there. Those who want to take it up may approach us if they wish and ask for a place. The only refusals I can see happening will be from us, when all the seats and aircraft are fully booked!

My thought was that I'm no spring chicken myself and even my ex-RAF dad was too young to see active service.[:D]

My friend said that the first year, the current pilots were nervous about whether these elderly gents would survive the flight - let alone handle the a/c after 40+ years, but they were very surprised, as most of the former pilots took to it like the preverbial duck to water. Embarrassingly well in some cases, apparently!

I saw a Spitfire (I think) at the weekend, but it was Saturday. Yesterday was not good flying weather - believe me, we waited and waited and waited...doesn't mean that there wasn't one though, but I was in Bengeo all day and never heard a single aeroplane.

Yes, apologies, it was Saturday, visibility wasn't brilliant but I could see the outline and hear the Merlin!

I am a member of the Hertford RAFA, albeit not an ex serviceman myself, and the Branch does have some WWII ex servicemen. Those that weren't were certainly seving up to and into the 1960's, Cold War and all that, with many interesting stories. The membership is pretty 'mature' but they may well be interested. I will raise it at the next meeting which by way of information is held the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Hertford Club, anyone may come along if they're interested.

There are always free flights available, but you do need to be ex-service to get in to this particular event.
