fish and chips

Anyone know of a good place for fish and chips locally? The best I've had around here so far has actually been the London Zoo, but I'm not going there just to satisfy a craving...

Not sure how local it is, but there are two chippies in Ware, one on East Street in the main town and another in Amwell End. Of the two I personally prefer the Amwell end one as the others have always left me and my other half feeling rather ill, but given the length of the queues outside the other one obviously some people like them!

I rate the Ware one. Dont like the Hertford one on the wash.

The East Street chippy in Ware is the best around.

I recall picking up a book in a shop a while back - called something like 'The UK's top 100 fish & chip shops', and it was included in it.

Carly's in Fleming Crescent (where the Co-op is). I'll second GillP's comments, it is good.

Apologies if this seems a bit nosey, Elizabeth, but were the Fish and Chips for your American family? And, if so, what did they think?

Yep, it was for the American folks. They loved it. The verdict was the haddock was better than the cod.

Excellent! I had some Belarussian friends over a few years back and they liked fish and chips too. They were also quite keen on the pickled gherkins, onions and eggs I gave them but they are somewhat closer to their diet than deep fried fish. I didn't get around to giving them jellied eels............but I suppose they ARE friends! By the by, my Belarussian friends love Indian food.......have your folks tried any over here?

That is praise indeed as your average Kiwi chippy is far superior to what we get here. Generally in NZ you can choose batter or breadcrumbs, you can select the piece of fish you want yourself, the chips are crisp. The food on offer includes battered oysters, mussels and scallops; puaua (abalonie) patties, kumara (sweet potato) chips - and it is a lot cheaper. I'm hungry now !!!

I think I've visited most of those named but only Carly does not have bones in his cod.

Ewoowar-sorry for the delay (I couldn't read the words "pickled onions" and "jellied eels" without morning sickness kicking in). About Indian, I think it is very good here and we get it often. The visiting in-laws had it and liked it but the Thai (Baan Th????) went over much better, particularly with my sister-in-law from Italy. I like it but I prefer the Indian here.

Congratulations! I'm just 11 weeks. Who knew when we moved here that we'd be having our very own Hertford native? I think there's another regular post-ee who's expecting in February... OK, OK, Administrator, I know....off topic.

suprisly enough all i really wanted to eat during my first trimester was fish and chips. It kinda kept the morning sickness at bay. Good thing Carly's is just round the corner. Hope your morning sickness clears quickly, i had mine til 22 weeks [xx(]
