After a quick rummage on the internet it appears that they will only move them free of charge if you are disabled and unabled to read them in their current position. I hope there's a better response out there for you.........

yep you have to pay I had my gas meter moved outside by the gas board a few years ago, I think the price depends on where outside you have the meter moved to. Mine was directly the other side of the wall,can't remember how much exactly but even allowing for inflation etc £550 sounds a bit excessive, but then they have you by the short and curlies. The contractors move the meter, then another gas fitter,not british gas, comes later on that day to reconnect the supply,HOWEVER,thats all they do,consequently I still had a gas pipe poking out through the floor,luckily my mate is a gas fitter and came round to run the pipe in the wall to tidy it up,still had to pay him though The meter readers still knock on the door to read the meter,apparently it never filtered through to them the meter is now outside Two weeks after the work was carried out a cheque £20.00 arrived out of the blue from BG,compensation apparently,because the work was'nt carried out in the alloted time. good luck

I have just remembered that early last year we had a problem with a gas leak outside our house. It affected all 4 houses in our block and meant that the pipe from our meter to the main pipe in the road had to be changed. As part of the work the gas engineers were most insistent upon moving our meters from being in an outside cupboard to being placed upon an external wall. I did not want this to happen and insisted that they did not move it. However I recall they said it was policy.

Mine was also moved from inside to outside at British Gas' insistence! I was not fussed either way and cannot remember now why this was done, it was a few years ago and I live in a flat if that makes a difference.

Originally BG had a scheme to convert all meters to ones that could be read by remote control thus saving the gasman from having to call at each house. However I think the system was dropped when BG was sold off. But not before some meters had been moved to outside(OH was working on the techie side)
