I just tried to dispose of a few rubbish bags which were filled over the festive period, at the recycling centre in Ware. I had seperated it as best as i could but some of the bags ended up being a mish mash of leftover food scraps caked onto foil trays and the odd bit of wrapping paper.
Having deposited the plastic, glass bottles and cans, I was halted in my tracks as i tried to throw the sacks into the general tip. The chap required me to open the bag and show him the contents. This I did and he told me that i needed to seperate the encrusted on food scraps from the small scraps of paper etc.. you get the picture.
Is it me or is this just slightly over the top [?]
(I left my wheelie bin about 2 metres too far up my pathway and so it did not get collected by our "Good will to all men" binmen) Okay it might be too dangerous for them to venture onto unknown territory but there was no notice left so i did not know when they were collecting it.
Anyway after all that rambling my point is...does anyone else feel that the poxy little green carton provided for glass/cans and plastic is entirely inadequate and impractical [?] Why can't we have full size bins for such a purpose [?] We don't need the brown one for garden waste as much as we need one for the everyday items.
P.S No i am not an alcoholic with too many bottles to dispose of but an alcoholic with not enough space to dispose of the bottles.[:)]

I asked for another green plastic basket and got one! But what I think we need urgently in herts is plastic and cardboard bins-eg cereal boxes and other such like packaging. Herts county council is so lazey when it comes to recyclingfrom the home!

Agreed. We compost small cardboard boxes but have a stack of larger, thicker boxes awaiting the long promised day when cardboard will be collected at the kerbside. For those of us who do not drive a trip up to the dump with bulky waste is out of the question so the sooner card and plastic is recycled by collection the better. It would be good, too, if the council would collect electrical goods that need recyclying, as they do with furniture etc, now that the waste regs make it impossible to dispose of such goods in any other way.

We live in a flat and have no kerbside recycling at all. We therefore have to make regular trips to the Ware recycling centre and live in a semi permanent state of having cupboards crammed with bags full of bottles, cans, tins, paper and flattened cardboard awaiting the next trip. If I didn't drive we would have to put it all in the bin. As it is, organic waste such as teabags and vegetable peelings have to be put in the bin, as does plastic packaging because East Herts only seem to have provision to recycle plastic bottles.

I also asked for another green box and got one, I have to say ourt kerbside men are very good and take the shredded paper in a black bin bag, they asked for it that way as it is easier for them and they recycle the bag.
Having said that when we had a fridge fly tipped on some land we own we had a great deal of trouble disposing of it legally as the only vehicle we could get it in was my brother in laws sign written van and even though we had phoned to ask where we should take it and were told the place in Hoddesdon they refused to take it when he got there.
He then took it to a private skip site who are not allowed to take them and eventaully afetr some more phone calls ended up back where he started, you can see why things get fly tipped!

Re. the plastic bags, i have also asked if they recycled the bags we leave in the boxes and they said that they do not have a bailing machine therefore they go to landfill!! I do not put bags in the boxes. soon there will be no carrier bags to seperate tins/glass as bags for life will take over hopefully.
