Is anyone able to answer a question that has been puzzling me and my friends for some time? Why do the bouncers make you queue outside the stonehouse in the cold and wet when it is quite apparent that there is plenty of room inside for another coachload let alone the poor five people being herded outside? I would ask the bouncers but don't think they would understand the question. oh... and then have to pay to get in?????? is there anywhere else you can get a drink into the early hours?

You should put your request to the stonehouse management as the doorstaff are only doing what they are told to do...Im sure if you get there very early it is proballay free admission..PS Does the blackbirds charge.[?]Any one know

The Blackbirds doesn't charge. There is a queue as they can only accommodate a very resticted number of clients due to fire regulations. When you get in it is probably the most spacious pub in Hertford.

This is a free marketing technique they use. If folks are bothering to queue outside then from a distance it looks a hip and happening place and more people will swarm towards it. I used to fall for that back in the day.

It might look like theres lots of space inside, there are no doubt a fair number of customers out the back having a smoke. It always amuses me to see queues of people standing in the cold and rain waiting to get into these places!!

[:)] 16-24s don't mind queueing outside Hertford pubs because: a) it's cheap. Standing around outside gives you all the advantages of eyeing up the talent, chatting, hearing the music etc without having to spend your hard earned McWages on a drink. You will either have cheap booze in your bag or you will have had a skinful beforehand, at home or on Hartham or Tellytubbyland (the Castle grounds) b) you can smoke in the queue, you can't in the pub. c) you might not get in if your ID is dodgy (using an older sibling's legit ID [of the same sex, obviously!] is favourite). But even someone who has no hope of getting past the bouncers can put on their best clobber and enjoy the buzz of the queue for up to 45 minutes before getting to the front - that's when you pretend to have a text calling you away and you go and join another queue rather than face the humiliation of the bouncers turning you away. I don't believe you are qualified to state that people go for a late drink to meet people and therefore look for a queue. Where do you get this information from? I know plenty of people who like a late drink to chat with their friends and would choose one venue over another due to the fact that it did not have a queue!

Casting my mind back to my early to mid 20s I would say that people of a similar age would gravitate to the place that everyone else seemed to go to irrespective of the fact that there was no where to sit and it took most of the night to get served. I lived in Cheshunt back then. The Haunch Of Venison was a typical "local" pub. The owner stripped out all of the furniture, painted it purple inside and got a DJ. Fridays and Saturdays it seemed that the entire population of Cheshunt packed into the place. Once I hit 30, I found that a degree of comfort was acceptable. Take a look at the age of the punters queueing up outside the Stone House. No different to when I was younger, just a different venue.

Well, the Stone House isn't somewhere that you can go for a drink and a quiet drink. Seeing as there isn't an alternative venue, I would guess that there isn't the market for it.

Alternatively, if you'd like a more lively night, join the lively crowd at the Stonehouse. Bangin' tunes and dancing 'til late (be aware you may have to queue for entry).

And idiots who want a fight after two lagers. I would prefer No 11 of the Duncombe for a late drink myself. I would rather stick hot pins in my eyes than go in the Stonehouse and I certainly would not queue

Three pages of posts about queuing outside pubs? What is the Stonehouse like when you get inside?! I get the impression it is quite pleasant (for us oldies!) earlier in the week and they do good lunches. I have also heard they have got excellent staff.

Bottom bar is fine, even on a busy Friday/Saturday night. Food aint bad at all. Do not venture upstairs on a Friday/Saturday night unless you are under 25 and hammered as it is an interesting experience to say the leats.
