I did read some towns leave them up all year as it is easier than keep having to comply with health and safety. They probably have to go up early so they can be tested etc!

A bulb has already fallen out of the one between Oddbins and F.Hinds, it was then driven over by a car - tragic! [V]

I've started to notice a lot of shops putting their own decorations up now... Kudos to Arty... Walking past the shop today on my way to lunch, your sign 'The art of giving (or was it Christmas)' put a smile on my face. Although saying that...is it just me or do the decoration in the fish and chip shop across the road from the Castle Hall look a bit out of place?

More correctly the Mayor is only turning on the lights on the Christmas tree in Salisbury Square on December 2nd. The rest of the lights should go on sometime between now and then - waiting for the rest of the 51 4 foot led lit trees to be installed. And Elkiev71 thank you for your help last year. In 2004 I became the first person to be quoted in the Mercury using the words 'goolies', 'by', 'strung' and 'up' in the same sentence. Same will follow this year if anyone is caught trying to make off with the xmas tree lights.

Went through the Old Cross this evening...I miss the nodding reindeer lights that used to grace Wiggingtons... The junction looks so flat and dark without them <sigh>

I hope not too many people read the mercury and think the tree light swith on is today and not tomorrow. When the paper comes out on a friday and they say "tomorrow" you can't blame people, why can't they just say Sunday 2nd it would be much clearer!

I think the Hertford Christmas lights look terrific this year. I'm not especially enamoured with the twinkly santa/sleigh things, but the line of blue and white snowflakes along Fore Street and the blue-lit Christmas trees above the shop names look lovely. I'm so glad that the tree-holders are in use again. I also rather the like the decorations on the house behind the wall at Bluecoats - highly visible and very jolly. Well done Hertford. Mr.P - I also miss the Wiggingtons nodding reindeer.

Bah Humbug! to the house that has decorations up already. Not sure about the blue lights on the trees - I don't particularly like deep blue lights as christmas decorations. The Wiggintons Reindeer are still on Wiggintons (but there is much less Wiggintons that there used to be)
