Closing Shops
Real shame CIRCA is shutting in town, i bought a a radiator and a woodburning stove from them, really nice people and great service.
i think we can guess what sort of establishment will take its place..

When I first moved to Hertford, there were two greengrocers, a butchers, three shoe shops and a co-op as well as Waitrose and the fantastic fish shop in Hertford. I certainly miss the butchers and the shoe shops.[:(]

Unfortunately, the town is slowly dying off.
Day trade at least.
It will be like Hoddesdon in 10 years. the council are making all the same mistakes.

We tend to go to Brookfield Farm for the weekly shop and use the town for the pubs and dining. Not ideal but its a vicious circle that as the shops close less people visit during the day hence more closures...
Its not uncommon on Fri & Thurs night for the town to look busier than during the daytime.

Dude, would be interested to hear what mistakes you think the council are making that is causing shops to close? Surely the main reason that shops close is that people don't shop there.
I don't go into Hertford on weekdays because I work out of town, but I shop there every Saturday (and not in the supermarkets - I tend to get fish from the fishmongers, veggies and eggs from the market, have a pint and read the mercury in the Salisbury/Barge/White Horse etc.) and it seems to be thriving.
I do my "main shop" at tesco as it's just not practical to do this in Hertford as I always walk into town. So long as the town centre offers something different (e.g. gorgeous pasties from Scoff etc.) to the supermarkets, I will always use it.
As for shops closing - this happens, even in thriving towns.
You should head down there on December 4th when the European market is on and see what kind of buzz there can be in town.

Its gutted now, looking to open start of Dec i wud guess. Like i said its going to remain a Bar/Rest, but is going up-market to try a take a bite out of Barooshs thriving biz.
