Flooding
I know some of you are older than 21 and have lived in hertford for a number of years. does anyone know if the town or areas such as folly island have ever been flooded? or what was the max rainfal and when?

HN Station, The Subway have their fair share. Folly Island, I believe has not been flooded in living memory - I may be proved wrong. Ins. cover however, does have a premium being a flood plain area.

I remeber Cowbridge flooding and Beane Riad, no way into Bengeo but not aware of Folly Island floding, Sloop would be the man to tell you.

Folly Island used to flood but hasn't flooded since the weir was built down near Rivere in the 80's. The lockman way down the canal never used to open the lock and if it backed up enough then the island would be swamped. That's the tale I was told though ..

I did hear of one guy waking up to find his front room floor flooded on a Saturday morning.

There are many factors that contribute to flooding in Hertford. Obviously the rainfall is a key factor but there is also the matter of the sluice gates. In 2000 the sluice gates were closed to prevent flooding in the town itself but that contributed to flooding on the outskirts.

Port Vale flooded in the late sixties but I believe that was mainly due to a problem with the sluice gates or pumps not being properly controlled/watched/maintained. Floods at the North Station and in the underpasses are mainly due to poor drainage in the areas concerned and follow on from deluges of rainwater.
