Have to say, here's the cynic in me, due to the potential threat of Sainsbury's developing part of the Macs site.. perilously close don't you think to Hartham and the area where the skatepark was going to be... is there any correlation between the two?????? I cannot see how providing a recreational skatepark for youngsters should be thought more important than giving some of our law-breaking tennants days out, IPODS and the such like I keep reading about! Shame on our council...

Wooops sorry meant less important, I really think this skatepark is a necessary requirement and feel ashamed that us "oldies" who live in the town are letting down our youth...

Hertford's youth keep telling us that they are bored and that is why they are going around trashing the town. They have told us they need something to do - like a skatepark. Skatepark = something to do = no mindless vandalism. Maybe.

wow a one hour meeting! they are really pushing the boat outwith this one. have they even advertised this? i told my brother about this and he didnt know- thought he would be interested as have seen him wearing a 'where the **** is hertford skatepark' t-shirt.

Just on GMTV this morning, a "new female minister" who's name escapes me, was saying the govt. have £1bn pounds they want to invest in youth clubs and encouraging the youth to do hobbies and not vandalise.... and so when they have something on their doorstep in Hertford what are they doing? Dragging their feet and hoping it will go away! It won't. Why an earth cannot we get this up and running, is it that difficult? I am shocked that its deemed only an hour's worth of anyone's time, is that cos our Council is on holiday at the moment?????? Not all of the youth who skateboard trash our town... In fact its usually the ones without that do it and those that are drunk and older....

What I don't understand is that back in the late 70's we had a skate ramp built on the site on Hartham of an old open air lido type paddling pool... it didn't take long to a) get constructed and b) get used! It wasn't maintained and sadly was taken away in mid to late 80's but as we've had a ramp before why the problem now? A park is for playing on, eating, walking on, reading on, cycling on, come on just build it, get the kids burning off their excess energy and move into the 22nd Century..

Is there a clear connection between a lack of skatepark and youth crime? Do towns with skateparks have significantly lower youth crime rates as a result? Are towns with extensive youth entertainment provision havens of low vandalism? I think it more likely that politicians, faced with no real answers, spend our public money on such placibos and we grab them gratefully as a means to excuse us from responsibility for our own offspring's behaviour.

I entirely agree with you Steve. It's not even in people's lunch hour! I shall encourage my son and his friends who have not got jobs at present to attend. If no-one turns up it will be yet another argument for not having a skate park. I would take issue with the remarks made that if there is no skate park then vandalism takes place!!

Shunt, if we all had your views maybe we wouldn;'t have the swings and slides at Hartham common for the younger children to play on! Come on we moan that kids hang around, let them hang out with their mates, get fit and having fun.. I really think of the vast amounts of money councils waste and spend on fruitless enterprises and salaries of their council leader case in point, that some of that could have already paid for the skatepark!

Well I for one think the skatepark a good idea, I feel the youngsters enjoy this sport and should be encouraged! not to moan at them for hanging around Hartham car parks, whenever I have had to pass them, they all stop what they are doing, so I can pass. They are not bad kids just a little bored with the restrictions they have.

Popped in briefly this afternoon - no organisation, no structure and no-one from East Herts Council could find 60 minutes in their day to turn up, leaving it to Freestyle to try and manage the event on their own.
