Surprisingly enough, there are still many, many people out there who do all sorts of community and charitable work for absolutely no monetary return at all! (i.e. it costs them in terms of travel expenses etc.)

I do a lot of charitable/free work Kate, but would you get up at 7am for 10 squid on a Sunday to 'represent' someone who has robbed Tesco of some baked beans, and then says he has no father or mother?
What happened to social workers?

I'm going to volunteer. I received the details of the first training in the post this morning. I think the £10 is irrelevant. It's not meant as a payment, just to go towards expenses.
When I was a rugby referee the protocol was for the home club to offer the ref his expenses and for the ref to refuse them. That was voluntary too.
I really don't mind getting up occasionally to sit in with a young person who hasn't an adult to sit with them. It might even be why they are there in the first place.
I've been fortunate to have travelled round the world quite a bit and my opinion is that there aren't many places where the judicial system comes anywhere near ours. Part of that is our tradition of giving people access to representation. Despite the occasional lapse (and they seem to be high profile because they are exceptional), we should be confident that we won't be fitted up because of our political beliefs or asked for a bribe if we get stopped by the police.
Rather like exercising my right to vote, I feel it incumbent upon me as a citizen to contribute where I am able, and in this case I am. I feel grateful to be living in a society that, whatever its faults, is generally fair and inclusive.
