Id say Hertford needs both. The quality currently on offer in Hertford is indicative of too many people trying to spend a lot of money in too few places, despite some being overpriced for the standard they offer. There is no great battle for trade, forcing diversity and innovation. Every pub and venue in the town is full, however mediocre.

So will this new hotel also be using the multi-story car park? Perhaps they and the other hotel could pay to employ someone so we could have pay on exit, in return for some guaranteed reserved places for them.

On a positive note, The one thing Hertford is missing is a KFC. Save me driving all the way to WGC. I wonder if they have ever looked at the option of moving into town.

I don't think it's free enterrise that is being moaned about (and how do you define "moaning"?). It is more about the lack of diversity engendered by a domination of certain types of establishment, in this case restaurants and/or hotels. It's a legitimate argument whether or not you agree with the premise.

That would certainly be the case, if other businesses were viable, or restuarant/bar/hotels were not. Theres a tendancy to complain that there is nowhere to buy widgets and grommets, without really thinking how often one might wish to, and whether that is enough to sustain a business. I think we are fairly lucky in Hertford to have a fair variety of specialist retail and this new venue replaces an estate agent. We've got a few of those.

i'd say yes hertford definately does need another restaurant! and as for hotels how many are there? 2? hertford house and salisbury? 2 isnt many hotels for a county town!

OK, so I questioned whether or not Hertford needs another Hotel. Maybe what I should have said was :- "Does Hertford need another Hotel priced towards what I perceive to be the top end of the (Local) Market?" Now, if these new people should decide to open a decent "B&B" style establishment at prices that undercut the other two local hotels then I think they will do rather well - and good luck to them!

I'm all for it. Diversity is a good thing and having a another option for dinner/drinks in town isn't bad. As for the hotel, I do not have a problem with that either although I wouldn't see the need to use it as that would seem lazy to me - seeing as I'm only a ten min walk from town....

i think the hotel side would probably be a good thing. I think also that hertford and surrounding areas is saturated with places to eat. Its a very tricky market at the moment, where people dont seem to have the money to spend on luxuries like dining out at the moment.

It's not saturated - you still have to book at most restaurants at all but the leanest times which means they're all busy and therefore turning healthy profits..

Is the hotel really a hotel or is it more about a restaurant that also has a hotel (if that makes sense)? Another thought is that the number of visitors to the South East in 2012 will be huuuge. So whilst Hertford will not be at the top of the tourist list it would only take a few to look at the map, see that you can get to Stratford from here, work out its pretty much in between Luton and Stansted Airports, read about a quaint English county town (hopefully they won't read this forum!!!) and it would easily fill the hotel rooms we have here!! How longs it on for?
