Woohoo!!! I work right behind the airport in a shool. ATM we dont hear any aircraft noise... if they had have done an expansion that could have changed

I don't know, but we should be on our guard. I think the recent environmental nightmares (severe flooding in UK) and the fact that rightly or wrongly today "Live Earth" is being performed to make us all aware of global warming and saving our planet, should mean that we really try hard to stop the Stanstead expansion. I am not a hippy munching greeny, just someone who wants a planet for children and grandchildren and the wildlife within it (see BBC's Saving Planet to see what I mean)

Personally, I have worked on part of the EIA document relating to the expansion of Heathrow, and if the proposed "development" there is anything to go by, then the envisaged destruction and disturbance in the "Stansted area" really is quite minimal. So if the government are prepared to accept the total destruction of two historic villages in West London, I get the impression they really don't give a s*** about the residents of Hertfordshire, West Essex and the M11 corridor. This situation appears to have been worsened by the establishment of the east of England regional assembly, which has effectively disenfranchised a large part of the population in the aforementioned area, and appears set to recommend the 'devastation' of a large area to the north of Harlow and support Stansted expansion. Sorry for the rant, but this is one of those emotive issues that really does get my pulse racing and I sometimes feel the need to vent my feelings somewhere.

There will be great gnashing of teeth a weeping and wailing in some quarters. I know of several Hertford bods who have invested heavily in Luton property on the promise of the airport expansion.

Its not a problem to most residents who are kept awake/woken up by the planes!! I used to work for Monarch so love air travel etc, but there comes a point - especially with global warming and being told to cut our carbon footprints, that you have to say enough is enough...

Poor old Luton. It's regeneration and renaissance has been "next year" since WW2. Still, the lack of airport expansion is a small step in the right direction. If others start to limit the number of flights they take, perhaps it would have been a white elephant anyway in time. Since it seems impossible to get through to people that the key is not more efficient cars, but driving less, or not more efficient manufacturing, recyclng and farming, but buying less in the first place, I doubt if flying will ever return to a rare and luxury status either, until there's nothing left to run the planes on.
