Anyone know when the conversion of McDonald's old premises is going to begin? I know it's only going to be another bank, but it might brighten that end of Maidenhead Street up a bit.

I haven't heard anything and HSBC is keeping mum at the moment... I agree, it would smarten the end of town up a bit...

Actually - just had another thought to my original post.. Will some vaults have to be dug out (like on Oceans 11)(topical bit..) to store all the loot and gold bars in? Would that be possible there, or don't they need that sort of thing anymore?

I was in Kerala 2 weeks ago and met an English speaking HSBC worker who was off-shift. He told me that the calls are automatically re-routed at 5.58pm to India on a Friday. He reckoned that the majority of enquiries after 6pm are simply ditched by the caller due to poor understanding of english. I hope that this new branch is a nice walk-in bank. The current one has the bank manager standing at the door like she wants to sell double glazing. Shame that when I showed her my wallet, she wandered off. The search for a Bond girl goes on. Off to the zoo.....

You won't get the banks to open Saturday, and if you do.. I'll eat my hat! Only a few months back HSBC had a notice on their front door saying they would be closed saturdays from a certain date, so sadly its unlikely. Move your account.... They only do things if you take your money... So you might get something off that, if not, you;ve gone to a better bank, Ihope, that might listen to you and not the sound of the cash tills ringing in their ears at shareholder meetings!

I spoke to someone on Saturday morning who had been a loyal customer fo the Woolwich for as long as he could remember. Although they will be moving into Barclays by the end of the month the Woolwich staff are recommending (best phrase I can think of) that Barclays also open on Saturdays as that is the best day for the majority of their customers - a sentiment echoed by my man above. First question - who goes into the Woolwich? I am sure this was a Dixons or Curry's when I first moved into Hertford. Unlikely to get permission for a coffee shop (but who am i to say that?) so what large retail group fancies Hertford. Answers on a postcard. Second why are not all the banks open on Saturdays? Fortunately for me my Banking career began as the major clearers decided to end Saturday opening and I left when they realised that they ought to have been open on Saturdays for the previous 17 years and were seeking volunteers at first. In the City there was no customers about to justify opening (so the argument went[;)]) but in a busy town centre such as ours that's the day when customers like to visit. Good to see that the library now has more flexible opening times. Last - I have heard about the reasons for the delay at the old Macs building and I have heard what HSBC plans are for opening hours etc. However, I have to get clearance from them to say anything on a public forum. See what i can do.
