Building site toilet facilities
I am not sure if this is being posted under the right section, but could someone tell me whether or not building sites must have toilet facilities by law? The reason I ask is that I have noticed on a recently started building project that there is no toilet and the builders are relieving themselves 'al fresco'. Is there anyone I can complain to at the council etc as I am not sure it will be too pleasant once the warmer weather comes...

I am not sure of the department you require but you could always call the council on 01279 655261, explain your problem and their switchboard should be able to put you through.

I would also complain to the developer/builder or anyone else who is advertising it is their development. This is unacceptable behaviour. I doubt they would do that in their own gardens.

Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996 applies as done the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (CDM).
Report it to the Health & Safety Executive; suitable "welfare" facilities should be provided - CIS18 "Provision of welfare facilities at fixed construction sites" covers.

The HSE could serve an "Improvement Notice" to say that the contractor should provide suitable facilities or a "Prohibition Notice" stopping all activities on the site until it is complied with.
The bigger the developer the more attention the HSE will take, they love prosecuting a big company to draw attention and news value to the industry.
