A Bae146 just flew over closely escorted by a private jet. I know Liz uses a 146 and and I can't image any other circumstance where a private jet would be allowed so close to an airliner. Did anyone else see it?

Could it have been some sort of filming? They would need 2 planes faily close for that I guess, sorry didn't see it though.

And while we are all being so pedantic I might as well point out that I never stated that you said the Queen was on board the damn thing. I wrote, "Why would a private jet accompany an airliner with the Queen on board?". This was simply questioning your statement, "I can't image any other circumstance where a private jet would be allowed so close to an airliner".

Royal flights are no longer advertised as it were for obvious security reasons and the old method of establishing of what was known as a 'purple airway' was disbanded some time ago. The present system is to establish temporary Class A airspace without any specific mention of a Royal Flight and these do appear quite regularly in the Notams (Notice to airmen). But in answer to the original question, I have no idea [:)]

Steve, I think the royal 146 is white with a red tail, could you discern the colour?

No Class A airspace was established over Hertford at that time on 21 March 2007, so it would not have been a royal flight. I can offer no other explanation for the flight. Practising for an airshow perhaps or RAF training; pilots all need practise at formation flying - it is not easy!

What I intended to say was: no *temporary* Class A airspace was established over Hertford; ie, below 2500 ft - the base of Class A airspace above Hertford. Sorry, I assumed that the Class A airspace starting at 2500 ft was obvious - 'you can't establish something that is already there' was probably what I was thinking at the time of posting. It's been a busy day and I rushed the post without thinking it through properly. Sally
