I'm afraid Justin I disagree - just walk in town on a Saturday or Sunday and those dropping cigarette packets, tissues etc are not all young "skater geeks" they look to me to be in their late 20s to mid 30s and very well dressed. Perhaps you meant to say "Thatchers children"?

I think Justin is referring to the mess at Hartham Lane. There will hopefully be bins provided at this site so the skaters will have no excuses anymore. The biggest eye opener to me is on early Saturday/Sunday mornings when I've been around to start up Fun Day etc,after the evening economy has gone home to bed and seen the mess all over Hertford's streets. A couple of District employees do a fantastic job in cleaning it up and returning it to its proper state. But at 5.00am you would not believe the amount of litter outside every shop; not including the human waste!!

I believe most of the litter is generated from schoool kids meeting up after school (when its warm) and the Thurs/Frid/Sat drinking gangs that loiter around to the early hours. Ive also noticed that the wind tends to blow in the direction of the river, taking the rubbish with it. Edited by - Frenchie on 24 Sep 2004 14:12:30

Regardless of who is littering (and I believe it is children and adults alike), is there a program in place to help pick it up? I see workmen doing what they can all over town, but in my opinion (so take it for whatever it's worth...) with the amount of garbage in the streets, in people's front yards, and in the rivers would take a community effort to help. I'm glad to hear about the waste bins going in near the 'skater hangout'. I had a stranger approach me today in that very area (for the second time in 3 months) telling me what a shame is was such a beautiful area is so dirty.

More bins around the town as a whole would help. Its volume per head of population is very very low compared to much of the country.
