In recent years red tape has lead to the cancellation of local events with children's fun fair rides and assorted street entertainers. I can't imagine the amount of paperwork required these days if you wanted to walk elephants through the town.

And what about the modern pressure to be a responsible elephant keeper by bagging and carrying the poo to the nearest elephant poo bin? In fact, next time Bury Rangers moan about picking up the dog poo off the pitch I might just point out that it could be worse...

I have had mine so long I am not sure if it is still available, got it out again to get some photos to go with the family tree for my Dad's birthday today. Can't think I have seen it at the museum or HALS recently for sale though they are bound to have them in the libraries ISBN 0 9507352 1 3

I'd love to see any pictures from the Hertford in Bloom competition for that year - I bet the flowers were HUGE after all that fertiliser!

Hertford's first trunk road, perhaps? Anyway, see how bad things have become.. years ago we had a full-blown circus walking through the town. Now we just have a bunch of clowns running it.

Several copies of Hertford Past & Present available for loan at your friendly local library! There are also a couple of pictures of the circus parade in Hertford's Past in Pictures also available at your FLL!
