The cost of a set of bike lights is about the same as forty fags or a few pints. Come on parents get a grip. Even so, should we really put a price on our loved ones safety.

we just missed killing a couple this afternoon, they were belting down our hill when we fortunately came slowly round the corner, the girl skidded off and the boy just managed to stop..and thought it was funny..no helmets, the girl was very lucky..and stupid[:(!]

Outside the QEII hospital on Friday. An ambulance comes screaming round the corner and tries to pull into the hospital, blue lights flashing. It has to do an emergency stop as 3 "yoofs" on bikes try and dodge the ambulance. They found it funny.

CtyBird, I was going to start a similar thread on this subject. It is not only kids who are cycling around Hertford's streets without lights but also adult cyclists, who should know better. There have been more cyclists at night *without* lights this week than I have seen *with* lights. What is their excuse? Furthermore, the number of cyclist going the wrong way down one-way streets or just cycling wherever they want to on the pavement - incuding without lights coming towards me on a one-way street at night - is unbelievable. I do cycle occasionally, but I always use lights (if my batteries are dead I don't cycle - it's a no-brainer really) and I do my utmost to respect car drivers on the road. Why can't others do the same? As a motorist, it worries me. Sometimes, even with the sharpest look-out, I don't see unlit cyclists until the last-minute.

I started a thread on traffic on a similar subject, have had 2 similar incidents recently one in Welwyn road one in Hornsmill. They think it is "cool" to dodge traffic, they won't learn til one of their friends is injured I guess http://www.hertford.net/yoursay/topic.php?id=2126

Well.... even when not in the dark the little gits just cycle into the road without looking and then, rather than apologising, stick their middle finger up as I had to slam my brakes on (luckily I was only doing 10-15mph through a built up area with lots of parked cars in Cheshunt (near where I work). and if you hit one of these idiots, you'll get sued for every penny you have....grrrrrrrrr

See also the Cyclists thread on Traffic and Parking, and Fore Street - same thread. What's to stop them from cycling without lights, protective clothing etc? If you dare make a comment to them you are at best ignored, at worst effed and blinded at. It's seen by some as an infringement of their rights to be able to do just what they like. The shame of it is that when one of them is seriously injured, or worse - killed - it will be the motorist that's blamed. What sort of parent allows their little kids to be out in the dark, let alone cycling? I get the feeling I could reel off a very long list of the type of parent...........
