Place Names
Following on from Tazz's facts thread I thought this might be an interesting one.....the meanings of our local place names.
Bengeo
Is an Anglo-Saxon name which apparently means a spur or ridge over the River Beane.
Any more?

Not according to my "Origin of Hertford Street names" book. It's from port meaning gate or town, as it was one of the main thoroughfares in to town. And there's a whole host of street name origins here

Yes very good you all found the same link but that does not give you for example Mansfield Court which is named after Alderman Mansfield who was mayor and his daughter lives opposite us, I remember him.
