Big police presents around Parliament Sq Sunday PM

Does anyone know why so many police (plus vans) where around Parliament Sq yesterday afternoon? They where there for quite sometime and had put up 'Police Slow' sign all along Gascoygne way. Traffic was a nightmare as well, like rush hour - not sure whether it was due to rubber necking or road closures. Any answers? [?]

I think they were all just standing around chatting to avoid actually looking into crimes and helping out the law abiding citizens of Hertford !

Was it for Trafalgar Day? I think there might have been something happening at the war memorial for that, which would require police for security reasons given the times we live in.

If you have a problem with the police why not create a new thread about it, rather than using existing threads to just snipe.

I'm not sure such a significant police presence was warranted. There were police outside Simon Balle and an armoured mini-bus full of policemen in Castle Street.

The police would be required to prevent any Trafalgar Day commemorations. Such a blatant disregard for the feelings of French and Spanish nationals could not possibly be tolerated. Were there any incidents in the area the previous night that may have required a forensic search?

Polive had it on good authority that someone had put piece of junk mail in one of the rubbish bins in Parliament Square. The large presence was there in case the perpetrator turned nasty during the arrest.

The police presence on Sunday afternoon was for the Trafalgar Day Parade organised by the local sea cadet's. The parade went from Maidenhead Street, along the wash, passed Parliament Square, across the A414 to Pegs Lane, Hale Road, Queens Road and then to All Saints Church for a ceremony. After the ceremony they then marched back to Maidenhead Street. To ensure the safety of the participants and spectators the Road Closure Orders were requested and granted through the appropriate channels with East Herts District Council and the police presence was organised by the Logistics and Events Department at Hertfordshire Constabulary.

What do you think, that the Police all did it for a laugh and didn't want paying for it, I mean it's not like its their job or anything? Keyboard warriors like you piss me off no end - if your going to make spurious negative comments about the Police, at least clarify your gripe instead of commenting with no explanation. My 0.2p's worth : I have lived in Hertford since birth but have lived in many areas in the South East and have had to have dealing with the Police. The Police in Hertford and in Hertfordshire generally are excellent value. After many of them have probably had to put up with yobs and low life scrapping in the town on a Saturday night, puking up everywhere, and being abusive, THEY probably didn't want to have to give up their weekend to provide a presence at such an event. There are sometimes when the police have information or intelligence that YOU are not privy to about risks and other circumstances when organising such events. This is why they were there. Of course if you know better about civil contingency planning and risk management, you could always organise it next time...

Agreed that Tulip could have elaborated on her gripe a little. But I think you are all being a little unfair, this is a forum for discussion and her question on who paid for the police presence was reasonable. I would also like to point out that nowhere did she say they did not deserve to be paid for it! Tulip might want to tell you all about the sex crazed officer that pulled her over 3 times in one week just to chat her up! Now that I think is a waste of tax payers money!

I agree to... I haven't posted on here for a while for those very reasons. It seems you cant say anything without being disagreed with, or having your grammar spell checked by other members of the forum. Tulip made what she thought was a valid contribution to the discussion, and then as far as I can see from the subsequent posts was picked on. Everyone has their right to disagree with someone, but not to be ganged up on. This website used to be a good website for information about Hertford, but it seems to be going downhill rapidly.... sorry Steve.

I cannot see what the problem is, why can't we be disatisfied with the police services....after all we pay for them! It is no different from being disatisfied with the dustbin men or the people that dig up the roads at inconvenient times? After reading the thread regarding last nights alarm that I can confirm woke me up at 2pm and did not go off until at least 4pm, then also finding out that the police were not even willing to investigate I can only say "Thank You Hertfordshire Constabulary, obviously blocking the road so that the Sea Cadets can march through town is a better use of resources?"

Why do you think the Police would be at a public event? You have 3 guesses and if you get it right you will be given the "Stating the bleeding obvious" award for which you have, on many occasions, been such a close contender. What you don't seem to realise Dude, is that you don’t know who I, or many of the people who are on this board are, or who, or what they know.... So, you carry on making your ill thought out statements, - presumably, for attention...

I'll try and simplify it for you. If you are "in the know" fine, but to expect Tulip to know if plain stupid. You jumped down her throat, only to later claim there was a hidden reason the police where there. Its a case of put up or shut up. If you aren't willing to say it, don't pick on others for not knowing.

It doesn't matter if I am in the know or not. The main reason the Police would be there is not a hidden matter. It is a matter that anyone with half a brain cell would be able to reason. It is obvious the Police wouldn't be there for fun. They would be there for a reason- a reason which would justify the expenditure to the public purse. So, no simplification is necessary thanks. Tulip posted 2 snide posts about the police. One about them standing around and chatting and failing to help the law abiding citizens of Hertford, and the second (again a close contender for your award), about who was going to foot the bill for their presence. I know the majority of the police in Hertford to be highly professional and competent, and worth every single penny they earn. Hertfordshire has one of the best constabularies and it is one of the safest counties to live in, because of the officers who serve and protect us. Petty and inflammatory comments such as yours and Tulips are not only shooting from the hip, but display monolithic ignorance to boot.

These two comments had me rolling on the floor! [:D] Firstly, "It doesn't matter if I'm in the know or not". Thats exactly the point. You jumped down someones throat for daring to have a personal opinion, then you claimed there was another reason for the police being there. Asked to back it up, and you begin trying to twist the conversation into some moral crusade for the police. Grow a pair and either produce your information or admit you are not in the know at all. Secondly, I don't think anyone is buying the fact that you, the king of inflammatory comments and ingnorance, is going to hand over the throne! [:D]

If someone has a question as to why the police are acting in a certain way, or indeed what they are up to - ask. Questioning is quite different to making snide and offensive comments as to what the police are doing. Was there another reason for the old bill being than Tulip suggested, ergo that they were chatting and doing nothing - well of course. So , here’s an inflammatory comment from the King then: If you think that anyone who is a policeman, has connections to the police, or any related agency is going to identify themselves or those they are connected to on this board, then you are very stupid, and the only reason you are up at this hour is because you have nothing better to do than count down the hours. I am pretty sure that a few people on this board know who I am, as I know who they are- but neither of us would confirm this on a public board. It has got nothing to do with growing a pair, and everything to do with common sense. With that I’ll leave you to your ignorance and ill informed speculation. Night...

The problem is simple. You can be dissatified with the police, sure, but how is sniping constructive? If you have a problem with the police, tell us why, rather than just posting negative remarks devoid of any qualification. Posting defamatory comments without any background just comes across as bigotry.

Hertford.net it seems is now a forum for the police authorities friends and families to stand up for their siblings career choices. I was once married into the police force and I know what goes on..........so don't patranize me with your stories of how they are some kind of elite force here to protect us, they are just normal people earning a wage like the rest of us and if they can avoid doing any real work they will do. They slope around the town in their uniforms wondering where the next free cuppa tea is coming from. They real police men who really want to do police work join police forces such as the Met or Manchester City, Hertford is for the ones that want an easy life! If you don't believe me ask an honest police man if you can find one!

I wish I had not started this thread. I simply wanted to find out what was going on as I was concerned that something bad may have happened (fire etc...). I am glad that it was for the parade and nothing more. What ever people think of the police, I doubt very much indeed that a force that size was assigned to the area unjustly.

Why do you think Buzz doesn’t reveal his real name, or the other police officers that I know post here? It is because they, like you, do not want to reveal who they are. I add myself to that list. With regards to your quote, it would have been helpful for you to have given the context in which I said that. The context was that of liability for a claim in defamation/libel, due to identifying someONE and making untrue claims about THEM. The ‘burden of proof’ as you chose to quote, has got absolutely nothing to do with passing comment on the Police service, as no one officer was identified, nor could what I have posted have been defamatory in any sense of the word. If you had any legal knowledge you would have realised that- yet it appears that it is you who is passing comment on matters which you are not informed about. I hope for your sakes that you are not a barrack room lawyer, dispensing similar advice frequently to others about matters which you don’t have the first idea about, else you might be the one having to become more familiar with the law. I think this is what most people are reading from your response... blar blar blar....I'm going to avoid answering....blar blar blar....I'll suggest you asked me to reveal myself, rather that simply justify the initial statement.....blar blar blar..what is the initial statement? I've gone off on such a tangent I don't think I can remember.....blar blar blar....I know, I'll carry on talking down to people in the hope they get so bored they forget my double standards....blar blar blar....how dare you question me, I'm the oracle of knowledge on every subject you know!....blar blar blar....I'm Cracker, Kavanagh QC and Michael Schumacher in singular human form!....blar blar blar..... Anyway, jokes aside, we run risk of this becoming the Sentenced in Reading Vs Dude show, which isn't exactly on topic. Its about the police presence in parliament sq. My query was asking you to quantify your statement, when you attacked Tulip (I don't agree with her view by the way) by suggesting there was a specific undisclosed reason the police were in attendance in Hertford. Obviously, you don't want to, or cannot quantify that statement, so we'll have to decide ourselves whether it was anything sinister such as an Al Qaeda cell within Sea Cadets. [:p]

My reading was not that Exiled was suggested this. There are sometimes when the police have information or intelligence that YOU are not privy to about risks and other circumstances when organising such events. This is why they were there. I think the last sentence "This is why they were there" might be construed as suggesting there was specific intelligence but it was not how I interpreted the paragraph. Just my 2p.

...and you would be correct Steve. Pot calling Black eh dude? Talking down to people?! Any future corrections of dodgy legal advice you dish out will be chargable £125/hr plus VAT. It was Dude that guessing about what that intelligence was. Just because I phrased it "intelligence" it doesn't mean it was an Al Qaeda plot, it could also be that an extra 20 girlguides were thinking about turning up! I dont know, and to be quite frank, I dont care. You seem hell bent on arguing semantics and doing a post mortem on everything said, something I have no time for i'm afraid. (As it happens, i'm not aware of any terror cells within the sea scouts at the moment!) Also, thanks for making other peoples minds up as to what they think - i'm sure they would prefer to tell me themselves rather than you representing their views! I was suggesting that there might be intelligence/information that the police have, which was why they were there, and would justify their presence. That is all.

He didn't choose to say "Maybe this is why they were there" or "This is probably why they were there". Its only a little difference, but it puts a completely different meaning to the comment, especially when it formed part of an attack on someone else. Its also worth noting that he did not say I had interpreted it incorrectly. Rather, that he should or could not reveal the information. It would seem a logical conclusion that I have therefore read the statement the way it was intended (and typed)?
