Judging by some of the recent posts if we cant have a Genealogy section what about a Local History one? That would cover family history as well as places / famous people etc.

Sounds a good idea; just been reading the stuff about the bulidings , the "tree" streets, the famous locals (sans horses or otherwise)& Steve's pictures have fueled a lot of comment. A lot of it has been covered before but there are new members all the time & I suspect that people wirth an interest in Hertford history log onto the site from (anywhere) all the time.... Any other views.....?

You are not alone - the various threads relating to local history are usually fascinating. I especially enjoy the ones relating to "recent" history - ie things that I can remember from my misspent youth. Let's hope that Admin agrees!

OK - here's a chance for a man-and-boy Hertfordian to demonstrate local knowledge. I was told that 30ish years ago, Old Cross was flooded (with water, not economic migrants). If so, this would suggest that Port Vale would have been all but submerged. Did it really happen? Did it?

I am meeting a young lady tomorrow from Hidden Britain (lucky me - but I have a chaperone) - who can possibly point me in the direction of loadsamoney to promote Hertford as a tourist attraction. This is very odd because as anyone who lives here knows we are sitting on over a thousand years of history (my chair for instance was carved out of the first pudding stone hewed from rock submerged in The Wash). A local history section would be of immense value to help promote Hertford and for me to be able to include snippets in a brochure and AV guide that I am hoping to provide with funds supplied by an application to the Quality of Place Fund. I was very disappointed earlier this year to get turned down for a similar application to open up the River Lea. But my glass is always half full (I prefer half empty because others will usually top up the pint) and I am more hopeful this time. I will of course keep you all up to scratch.

Fabulous! That explains why we're repeatedly showered with helpful documents from the 'you're all going to drown' agency - I forget their official title. I've always thought it nonsense alongside the fact that there are all these lovely mortgage-bound people with houses on flood plains down the street... It still doesn't remove the comedy of a 'bloke I know' getting the very same drowning/wet carpet warning documents - he lives on the 2nd floor of Mitre Court. I'm sure we're meant to get a plague of locusts and stuff before it gets that acute.

I remeber this incident as I was at school at the time and coming back to Bengeo from Ware there were no buses up the Hill so we walked to Cowbridge and then there was a Flat backed coal lorry I believe that we all colambered on to be driven through the flood, I think they also used a tractor. We were told at the time it was human error with some river gates but i am not sure if that was the case.

Andrew, yes it is but will post whole thing on here tomorrow (early Friday) as i want to see what is being printed in the Mercury first. Sounds a bit odd but everything happening at once as is usual in life and i want to be able to tie everything together.

I remember very well the floods of'68,i too was at school,i also have several photos taken both at the bottom of Port hill,(including one showing people in the shovel of a JCB being ferried across)and the junction of Beane road/Nelson st/Port Vale/Molewood road....if my memory serves me well it was September...and i had just started at'Big' school(Sele)... the funny thing is..i had to cross said junction on my way home (i lived in Wellington st) and i didn`t get my feet wet....either it happened after school hours..anybody know?...or for some reason i wasn`t at school that day.... Re the photo`s,unfortunately as we are currently between houses they are all packed away in storage,so i am unable to scan them in..even if i knew how too...

There was also some flooding in the mid 70`s....once again i took piccies..i seem to remember photo`s of Gascoyne way & Horns mill being affected.

So can we have a History section then please and we can do seperate topics for each item. I didn't know wher to put History stuff as it is not covered by traffic/ community/ shopping etc. I suspect it might be of more interest that Cinema which is not very well used.

A post on 'The History of Hertford' is surely the future Admin. I am not sure whether you where born around these parts Admin, but 30's style houses built by Norris and sons, the Arcade which is now Bircherley Green, making trails in the Warren and using old lorry inertubes as dingies on the Lea surely deserve a remembrance? Bring it on, please!!
