The Hillside - Congratulations

Well done to Justin and Co for getting to be a full blown Michelin entry. Just goes to show what plenty of hard work, good product and a dash of customer service can bring. Well done to you all.

well done Justin! Good to see a local restaurant of such good quality gain national recognition. Maybe this will put Hertford on the map, where Jade Goody failed to do so!

Just to clear things up, as I did ask on a post here last week that mysteriously disappeared, what exactly he had been credited with? I spoke with Justin last night and although he has had a listing in the Michelin pub guide for the last few years, he now has a full listing in the Michelin Restaurant guide. Just out of interest admin, why did you feel the necessity to remove my question from this thread last week?

The hillside is not at michelin star level, and never will be. Its not what we are about.

Well done on the proper listing, Justin. We'll be in again soon. Can you expand on your quoted statement? --- GillP - Happy Birthday!

Well done on the proper listing, Justin. We'll be in again soon. Can you expand on your quoted statement? --- we are too small, we have 1 person in the tiny shoebox kitchen, the food we do is not michelin star level, service is quite informal and relaxed. GillP - Happy Birthday!

Very good news on your mention. I have always found M starred places have rather rarified atmospheres. They also tend to cost me after the event because Mrs P is always hankering after the china...[:D] Part of the reason I love the Hillside is because the atmosphere is so relaxed and informal; people aren't afraid to laugh out loud with fear of upsetting their neighbours.

(Not sure which Hillside review thread is the more active, hopefully here will be ok...) Mrs. Joby and I had dinner in the Hillside on Friday night; our first proper night out since Baby Joby was born. We were worried that we would spend the entire night worrying about Baby Joby--I believe this is common amongst new parents taking their first, tentative steps back into adult society--but the quality of the experience ensured he barely got a mention. I started with the potato and watercress soup, which, after I'd waited what seemed like an age for it to cool down, was absolutely gorgeous. The roasted hazelnut topping was an inspired touch and added real body to the soup. For main course we both had the partridge, which was cooked to perfection (always tends to end up like shoe leather when I attempt it myself) and the accompanying marrons and glazed parsnips made me think of autumn for the first time this year (food-wise, the coming months are my favourite time of year for rich, warming flavours...) As is usual we both had desserts that perhaps we didn't really need, but were glad of leaning towards gluttony. Both pecan tart and tarte tatin were gorgeous, and Mrs. Joby was particularly impressed with the calvados (I think) cream on the tatin. All this topped off with a wonderful pint of Hooegarden in the bar (standing room only!) afterwards made for a superb evening out.
