The Old Barge

Visted the Old Barge last night for the quiz night. Its a couple of years since I went in there and I was impressed. A good range of real ale and cider as well as sveral keg continental beers. A good atmosphere and mix of ages and a fun quiz. Though I don't think an alternative name for the Ebola virus is Legionairres Disease, as the quiz master claimed.

I like the building, but they need to clean their pipes a bit more often!

I'm glad it's not just me! I had a decidedly cloudy brew in there last week.

I was in there on Thursday and had a really nice pint (or four) of Black Sheep - my mate's pints were very cloudy, but they were drinking the scrumpy cider ..... Off topic - the Quiz Master was definitely wrong on the Ebola one as a quick check on the web will show

Quite right! Legionaires' Disease is respiratory and Ebola has you bleeding from your eyes as all your innards disolve. We have often had to question his questions!

Poor old quiz master Stuart! He does it for free, for years. He's bound to have the odd slip up![:)]

having spoken to one of the barstaff i know, it appears that the new manager is cleaning the pipes far more regularly then his predecessor. I am lead to believe that when he arrived the pipes were in need of a good clean and that this is now being done far more regularly. Hopefully the problem of cloudy pints is a thing of the past.

Ahem: Stuart most definitely does NOT do the quiz for free.. Far be it for me to reveal just how much he gets paid for each quiz but it's a nice little bit of pocket money, I can tell you! But you're right that he rarely makes howling mistakes like the Ebola/Legonniare's disease one. He was awfully embarassed by that one!

I'm slipping! He used to do it for free, then it was for beer. But I'm not sure what he does it for now. He should ask for a sum, particularly after the way Tom treated him to begin with.

Whilst there a few weeks back on a Thursday jazz night - of which it is advertised outside the bar is open to midnight - somebody came in from the tables outside and requested a drink at just gone 11. The lady behind the bar whom i took to be the landlady, said as it was a quiet night the pub was now closed. In my opinion he was justifiably miffed...Yes we all know publicans can open and shut when they like within reason but if you are clearly advertising that you are serving till 12 you should do so. Also, in deciding to shut early there was no first - or last bells so customers were warned in advance of the early closure - shabby !

Just wanted it noted that the lads outside on thursday night didn't get served because they were completely slaughtered and it was easier for my wife to say we were shut than to argue the toss with them. Apologies to the other 4 customers who we would gladly have served had they asked. We're just trying to keep the pub nice, please feel free to approach us about these things, we don't bite! As to the real ale, the beer lines are now cleaned after every barrel change, but quality can change from barrel to barrel.

When in there for the first time in six mounths.(away with work) The new landlord and landlady seem to be running it ok. But seem very grumpy. No even a smile or a hello. Oh well sign of the times maybe! Almost seemed that they wanted to be some where else. Wont rush back! Used to drink there all the time shame. Cheer up.[:D][:D][:D]

Just as a footnote to this thread, it is not easy running a pub you guys. I am sure Rooster will agree as she is now landlady of the pub my parents ran for 17 years that you cannot be all smiles 24-7, it is impossible. Particularly when you are very busy. I am sure you would rather get your beer on a busy saturday night sometimes rather than some robot grinning at you. Please take these things in to account before calling someone miserable as it affects their trade. A restaurant is different as that service has to be more personable.

Went to the Jazz night this evening - not a Jazz freak but this was fantastic - Mike Carr, has played with Dizzy Gillespie (even I've heard of him) The Drummer and Sax Player were also brilliant, providing excellent entertainment for all. Next one in 2 weeks' time, if this is the standard, then you have to try it.

The next Jazz night is Bobby Graham who used to play session drums for the kinks and other famous bands. He's even had his biography printed - last time he played here it was a great night.

It certainly is - popped in there for a couple last weekend and the guest beers (one called Jouster and another which was an American Pale Ale) were superb. Considering how crap the beer in the Barge was for years, this is superb news.

Even though it's really nice to hear about customers appreciating the work we have done on beers and service, for every 200 meals that we send out that customers are delighted with, your friend has 1 bad experience and that is the one that ends up plastered all over the local forum for everyone to read and judge my pub by. Bloody disheartening.

Pretending to be someone you're not is fraudulent. Resorting to false pretences is not trying to look after your own, it's trying to dupe people. Frankly, it puts me off going there if that's how they behave. It's dishonest.

Correct, I think this is someone fraudulently posing as Shrek. The real Shrek has a Scottish accent, whereas this poster has an Estuary accent [:D] Seriously though, I think you may have missed a number of significant posts on this page, one in particular that was removed by the author but is still featured in Rooster's reponse.

A friend and I went there tonight for the Jazz. It was a very enjoyable evening - the quality of the live music was excellent as always As for the pub, well, the beer really is well kept, the prices aren't silly and the service is genuinely friendly And before you ask - I'm not a staff member, relative, shareholder or otherwise connected to the Barge in any way, shape or form. I tell as I find - if I thought that it was a bad pub I'd say so. Definitely worth a visit in my opinion.

Yes Dev. music was great, beer brilliant, BUT, Mrs Arkwright and I sat at the bar as you know and the bar staff are louder than the band. Personal gripe, but service should be polite and discreet and it wasn't (for us anyway!).

It's a reference to all the animal themed pubs in Hertford: White Horse, Black Horse, White Lion, White Hart, The Ram, The Greyhound, The Blackbirds, The Golden Griffin, The Warren (furrybunny's favourite). Clearly it won't last, as the demise of The Dolphin and the change of name of The Reindeer to the Hooden Horse then to The Hillside shows. Animals are soon to be off the menu. Much to furrybunny's relief.

I don't think so. Quote from Wikipedia: Theme pubs Pubs that cater for a niche audience, such as sports fans or people of certain nationalities are known as theme pubs. Examples of theme pubs include sports bars, rock pubs, biker pubs, goth pubs, strip pubs and Irish pubs. In the U.S., almost all drinking establishments called "pubs" are simply bars with an Irish or British theme.{fact}

What's with the 8-seater table near the bar always reserved with nobody sitting on it? Seems very odd to prevent larger groups of customers from sitting down, and even odder for the landlord to sit there reading a book on his own on a busy Friday evening.

I agree, very annoying for a large group to be pushed further up the lounge just because "staff" want to sit on the table nearest to the bar!

By way of an explanation. The table you are reffering to (table #1) has to be big enough for us to do all our paperwork on it in the mornings, and next to the bar so that in the evenings we can hear the baby monitor (our daughter is not quite 2 years old). We put a smaller bench seat at it so that the bigger bench seat could be used on another table to make more space for customers. When customers come in and try to seat 8 people at a 5 person table, 2 of those customers have to sit right by the bar which stops staff a) collecting glasses and ashtrays, and b) bringing food in and out of the kitchen (hot plate loaded with dinner on to unwitting customers head (very last years look)). So that when I've put the baby to bed and come downstairs I can be near the monitor without 8 customers making themselves comfy at table 1, the bar staff put a reserved sign on it for me. As for the book thing, sometimes I am just selfish and decide I've had enough of work for 1 day and decide to sit down and read a good book for a bit. I do keep an eye on the bar and if anyone isn't served by the staff pretty promptly it's book down and back to work. (PS, if there is nowhere to sit, you could come and join me - I can react quicker to customers telling me what they think of the pub to my face than on the forum. This isn't meant to be a rant - it's just the best way to manage the foot traffic at table 1 and be able to listen out for nipper. Also, try Player of games by Iain M Banks. - guarunteed to stop you working !!!

I would just like to mention that I went in there on Sunday and waited by the bar with money in hand and while 6 members of staff were cleaning etc taking no notice of me. After waiting about 3 mins some other people came into the bar and were served immediately, so I voted with my feet and left. I went to the old cross tavern in the end and found that there was better service.

That can happen if the quiz is on I've noticed but usually the service is OK. A couple of Sundays ago one of the bar staff (who saw me standing at the bar not one metre from him) ignored me and carried on talking to his two customer-mates! Then he charged me £2.60 for a pint of ... coke.

This is a very common occurrence if you're not a regular. I've been popping in every few months or so for years just to prove to myself that it hasn't changed. It is probably as cliquey as the white Horse used to be at it worst.

I was made welcome from my first visit. My second was on my own on a quiz night and was welcomed to join the Landlords team. You will always get different personalities in every place and every job, that's what makes us all so unique. Best thing I've always found is to address a problem personally if you can and it is likely to get sorted.

Compared to where?? A pint of Black Sheep is £2.55 in the Barge - a pint of (very good!) real ale in the OXT is going to be between £2.50 and £2.70 depending upon upon the ABV. You could buy a pint of AK for £2.38 in the Lord Haig I suppose (£2.30 in The Ram) I think AK is around £2.50 in The Salisbury? Then again, you if you choose to drink "Premium Lager" then you're going to pay through the nose wherever you choose to frequent!

I went there on Sunday. What a mess. The "Extra cold" beer was at best warm, then it ran out. So I swapped to Grolsh. Then that ran out. Then all the toilets were out of order. Finally, they shut it, an hour earlier than they had stated. And their was blatant cheating going in with some teams in the quiz. Mobile phones everywhere.

You can't blame the landlords for teams' cheating. Can you imagine the mess if they tried to confiscate people's mobiles? The only thing that can be done without a stand-up row is to bar the teams from future quizzes. Creating a point penalty may also deter, but the phone user could always argue that they were on the phone to their Dear Old Mum, just checking she was ok and not cheating at all, honest guv'. We were there on Sunday night and yes, Mrs P hung on for the loos but the other lady in our team used them on more than one occasion I beleive they were fixed sometime through the quiz, though could be wrong as I wasn't using them...! We were sans phones and did rather well for four people evenifwesaysoourselves, can you veify if the winning 3 teams were seen with phones in hand? If so, we'll need to bring out the Big Brains (baby-sitters willing) for the next time!

It seems quite straighforward to ban mobile phones during quizzes - they don't have to be confiscated. If there's any hint of cheating then other people just won't take part, surely. If nothing else, it's just bad manners and disrespectful to the other teams to use a mobile phone.

With the glorious weather at the weekend and the location of the pub, not only being by the river but a walk through to town from Bengeo/Hartham, it is not that surprising that things ran out and the loos took a pounding.

Publandlord- I have a complaint to air. After riding to Ware and back on Monday we stopped off at The Barge on the way back and I sampled some of your Old Rosie Scrumpy. Somehow this had an effect on my bikes ability to travel in a straight line, or indeed to negotiate some fairly simple corners, resulting in my bike being in the A & E Dept. of Marshalls cycle shop for emergency open gear surgery! If I introduce myself will I get a free pint? Fantastic Scrumpy, cheers! [:D]

I admire a manager that faces upto it, rather than deny it. Its the true showing of someone who cares about their customer. For that very reason you will have my custom again! But I won't introduce myself, as that won't keep your customer service on their toes! If I could make one request? Pub Quiz. Please limit the teams to 6 people and no phones. Although your trade is higher on a Sunday, people like me have stopped coming on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday because our regualr Sunday has been taken over by cheating student teams after a free night. You maybe gaining a good trade in Sunday, but it is costing you the regulars on the week.

We don't limit teams as the larger teams spend so long arguing amongst themselves they generally get it all completely wrong, said teams you will have noticed very rarely win. Student types caught nursing a coke or worse still tap water for 4 hours are shown the door and told how to use it. Mobile phones are banned ( with exceptations - someones wife went into labour last week ) However we do rely on other teams to point the finger as if it's mental busy our time is better spent pouring pints, collecting glass' or generally troubleshooting toilets, cellar etc... If it's not mental busy we do like to have the one night off and actually play the quiz ourselves, we have only won once before someone gripes that we shouldn't be allowed to play! Please let Stuart the quizmaster know of any cheating, he will disqualify the teams and make a fuss on the mike.

I too live in Bengeo and I would say that the Barge would be local to me as it's only a 10-15 minute walk into town. I think you need to get out of Bengeo a bit more often Hugh. Having said that, I don't drink at that Barge because of the overpriced poor quality wine, that's all. It's an ok pub though, apart from when the shirtless chavs descend on it on sunny days. Despite living in far away Bengeo I still frequent the Old Cross, White Horse, Salisbury, Baroosh and even the Vine in Ware! Can you recommend any good pubs in Bengeo Hugh? I am sure as a student the teams we form are not the target (there must be a rogue element) as we strictly adhere to no mobile phone rules and have come second once in many months of quizzing. As to the idea of a free night i do not believe anyone really does this. most people who are not driving will drink at least a couple of pints and the rest made up for with several pints of coke and bags of nuts. As for team size it would be nice to have smaller teams (we generally have around 8) but for more teams to exist there needs to be more room and this is not possible, and some of the teams that win most often are not in fact that large.

It's not a matter of being 15 minutes away from The Barge or any other Hertford pub, the point you "Hertford Born and Bred" made. Hi landlord Both myself and my wife are partial to a good new world sauvignon blanc so until you can get something as good as Spy Valley or Jackson Estate from New Zealand and sell it for £5 for 250ml, the Salisbury, Baroosh or the Vine will always get our vote. We had a meal at The Old Barge earlier this evening. The specials board BBQ ribs were absolutely fantastic; The meat just fell off of the bone and then melted in the mouth. Delicious! The live jazz was the icing on the cake, with a cherry on top. Best value night out I've had in ages. Many thanks.

One of my most cherished memories was had in the Old Barge, the day my Son was born, the evening was spent in a lock in, two thunderstorms converged above the pub and I looked down on the wet floor thinking there was a roof leak but it was wet with my tears of joy. Wonderfull pub.

I was in a team that won the quiz first time round at the Barge, our team was callled "We killed Kenny" and of course everyone would shout "You B*stards".Anyone go that far back ? There was a one man team called Chocolate Starfish who very nearly won it every week on his own and used to get pretty upset if he didn't. Glad its still going.

Blimey - I used to go there all the time but have been so busy at work (all you hungry Hertford people!) that I don't get out at all these days. Last time I went out, my friends texted as I was making my way into town, to say "Meet in the OXT instead because the Barge is dead" and we went to the OXT and we weere the only ones in there too! I think it was just before the end of September (payday?)

Not only have the students gone back but most 6th formers are still 17. As more get to be 18 the numbers will build up again. It was nice to have a choice of tables when we arrived last week, an unknown luxury recently.

We won it when John was the landlord, must have been way back in 1999 /2000 season , I was pretty active in running it, I used to do the league table and update it every week on an excel spreadsheet (which has nothing to do with us winning it btw) and post it in the bar. I will be available to join a team very soon and am open to offers (will quiz for beer and chips)[;)]

There hasn't been a league for about a year now, last one ended early Dec 2006. I guess the problem was that there were only a few regular teams playing compared to the ad hoc ones. We came last in that league so happy that it is just done week by week now.

So no overall winners then for a nosh up ?Thats a shame, saying that, the food was pretty ok then , like the Milky Jugs , we had a free meal on winning the league.Looking back I even think the meal idea for the winners was my own .

It seems entirely logical to me, since pub quizzes were devised to exploit a loophole anyway. Almost any other type of event on licensed premises attracts taxation, or the purchase of a special license, including pool, live music, recorded music, TV, dominoes or card game, bingo, fruit machines. On the other hand, the story did appear in the Daily Mail[:o)] and so is probably complete fiction anyway.

this really makes me irate. how much more money do they want from us? How much more do they want from small businesses - and in that I include pubs. It makes me remember the nostalgic olden days when pubs were full of miserable, silent people supping their pint before going home to cold, damp homes where they sat silently until falling into bed in readiness for getting up at dawn and going to work at the coal face. Obviously New Labour is misnamed. Gordon Brown must think that because he pulls in a bloomin' great wage then so does everyone else! I wanted that election! I was going to vote CONSERVATIVE for the first time in my life!

I thought that was funny. If I'd been Brown, I'd have used the same tactic. By allowing the Cons to push for election, he's confirmed that, amazingly, they really did have only two policies and bleedin' obvious ones at that. Now they have none and boy, are the Tories miffed! Anyway, as I said, I wouldn't be surprised if the loophole on pub quizzes was closed, simply as housekeeping, but tittle-tattle around parliament is often reported as fact by the press. It's not a huge fund raiser for government and would effect the average quiz and contestant very little. The few organisers who offer enormous cash prizes and those contestants who dominate and spoil such quizzes for income, should be taxed. Luckily, those are few and the Barge is likely to be unaffected in any meaningful way. Don't let the press wind you up, would be my advice.

It depends whether money or goods change hands as a result of the game, either directly or indirectly. Pool, since it normally requires money in the slot, is already taxed, as is any game for which a charge is made, or a prize offered.

Well done publandlord a great beer festival, had some great brews tonight, would like to sample some more. Unfortunately the behaviour of certain of your bar staff suggests I wont be coming back for a very long time! Having been drinking real ale for the best part of 20 years, witnessing a beer that is clearly past its best, being promoted by a member of staff - and being told that it is perfectly alright, does not go down well (its a pity you weren't there tonight as I know you would have stopped serving said beer straight away). To then hear bar staff audibly slagging off a beer "because it tastes weird" (the Rabbit Poacher if you must know) when it was perfectly alright raises serious worries about the competence of certain staff. However, being physically threatened by a member of staff (and one who was so wasted on Sunday when serving, he did not know what day of the week it was!) that really takes the biscuit. Sorry Simon, you have a great pub and serve great beers kept in superb condition, but I cannot frequent a pub staffed by idiots like that.

Reply ID 46609

Why would a pub landlord who was running a beerfest not be there, makes no sense to me at all as it is a once a year festival? Surely he would be there to promote his pub and guest beers. Aelle how can you say "Sorry Simon, you have a great pub and serve great beers kept in superb condition" when you say "Having been drinking real ale for the best part of 20 years, witnessing a beer that is clearly past its best", being in the same pub?

Reply ID 46611

Sorry Hugh, I must defend the landlord here. He was not there tonight (and if he had been, there probably would not have been a problem), but its a ten day festival and its not really reasonable to expect the landlord to be there all the time. The Old Barge is a great pub and the beers are generally kept very well. However, one beer tonight had gone off but the staff refused to admit it and continued to promote it. This, and the the way myself and a friend, were treated by certain members of staff tonight, suggests we will certainly not be in any hurry to return.

I'm not criticising the Old Barge specifically, but I think Aelles observation is more indicative of a lack of knowledge or interest (or both) in the licensed trade that I have often witnessed in various pubs round and about. I was once moaned at for ordering a pint of Abbot 'because I don't like pouring them on the handpump' [8)](I kid you not) and pouring a pint of Guinness correctly is definitely a dying art. I suppose if I just wanted the top taken off a bottle of some strange coloured concoction like WKD [xx(]I'd be all right.

Aelle, I apologise for the (apparent) poor quality of beer and service. It's tricky getting 25 real ales to perform at the time thay are required. However the staff issue is a bit of a worry. Are you seriously telling me that my staff are drunk and physically threatening towards you ? If this is the case, I suggest you make a formal complaint, or come and see me in person to discuss these very serious issues. Aelle, this is quite a malicious way to go about raising a complaint. I think it would have been wise to wait and raise the problem verbally with the landlord first. I must say that I have always found the staff to be friendly and have never witnessed this type of behaviour at The Barge.

I went into the Barge for a quick pint today. I didn't fancy any of the real ales so I opted for a pint of Westons cider from the handpump instead. To my amazement the barman asked for for £4. I thought he'd made a mistake so I got him to confirm the price but he insisted it was £4. Has anyone else been caught out by this unusually high price? I think the landlord must be using the wrong supplier if he has to sell it at £4 a pint to make a profit. I certainly don't think it was value for money.

You can buy 12 litres (winebox style) direct from Westons for under £40 including delivery which equates to about £2 a pint. I agree £4 seems on the high side.

Ah I thought the Westons reffered to Weston's scrumpy which they sometimes have on, which is a bit less alcoholic but still packs a punch. To be honest I had never noticed that Old Rosie was a Weston's brand as well, so I've learnt something there

Leo Densian - when you say 'you' can buy 12 litres of cider from Westons at the price you quote you may be correct - however 'I' cannot sell anything on the hand pumps that hasn't been sold to me by Punch Taverns - and beleive me, they do not charge me £2 per pint. The mark up on that product is about average - when you take into account how much I have to pay for that product.

That's the problem with this kind of lease, which is the most common these days. They leave very little for the publican. "20% discount" per keg, they offer (on a price that's 40% above wholesale). Then of course they'll want 50% of your fruit machine takings, a proportion of your food trade, all your soft drinks.......... If you are making living out of this, you're doing better than many of their tenants.[;)] The cost is to do with property prices. Think about what the Barge and it's car park would be worth if it were not a pub, or even just a plot. How much does that investment have to return to be viable? We can all buy cheap booze, but when you visit a pub, the booze is not really what you are paying for.

I see the Punch 'charter' states: Maximise the overall profitability of every site Optimise our share of the available profit If you are tied into their drink and a 50% cut of the fruit machine takings I do see why you are charging 4 quid a pint. Not a pint I will be buying at that price I hasten to add but I wish you well regardless.

I guess it depends on what environment you like to enjoy your tipple in. I personally like fresh clean surroundings and a sparkling clean glass filled with very chilled dry white wine. In my experience, that is not what I,ve had the last couple of times I,ve visited this pub. Spitfire is correct in stating that I should have complained at the time but I also feel that at just under £10.00 for a glass of wine and pint of beer I am entitled to expect good quality. Other pubs / hotels in the town mage it quite successfully.

OK. Thanks for the comments, both positive and ,erm, constructive. We have the pub cleaned every day so I'm surprised to learn that you found the pub dirty. Parts of the Old Barge are over 200 years old, and we like it to look like an old pub, a bit frayed at the edges but much loved all the same. Fresh, clean surroundings sounds a bit like maybe baroosh, but clean we always try hard to do. As Spitfire says, you SHOULD expect chilled wine in a sparkling clean glass and we try hard to deliver, but, this long after the problem occured, there is little I can do to fix it. Steve- I'm sorry about the fatuous comment but every now and then, even overpaid underworked publicans get the hump. apologies.

Both guests are pretty tasty at the moment - Oxford Gold and (I think) Haven. Tried both on Saturday night. Can't say I found the pub dirty or smelly. It looks and feels like a boozer should.

Probably the thing I like best about The Old Barge is the way it looks, the way it feels, the general ambiance of the place. It's old, it's somewhere to have a pint drawn from a hand pump, rather than a bottle of fizzy stuff. It's a bit dark, with it's low ceilings and wooden beams but that does not mean dirty. It has character and that's why I enjoy popping in for a pint now and again. Rather here than The Six Templars or Baroosh, with their contemporary styling and modern fittings.

Ok, I'd consider myself a regular (well, if once a week counts as such) and I can't say I've ever considered it to be dirty, or with sticky floors, or with worn out furniture, so I honestly can't understand those comments. I'm also *really* picky about my beer (ok, I don't often drink wine, so I can't comment on that) and I've always found both the guest and regular ales in very good condition (the Spitfire last night in particular was wonderful, as good as I've had anywhere - and that includes Shepherd Neame pubs only a very short distance away from the brewery in Faversham!). So I can't understand sunshine's comments at all.. If those problems were genuinely experienced then all I can suggest is that they were, to use a football term, most definitely 'against the run of play' and not to let it influence your opinion on what I think is one of the best pubs in Hertford.

I have to agree with Pez, I've been going in about once a week in recent months, and used to frequent the Barge a lot last year too. I've never had a problem with either the cleanliness, food, drinks (beer or wine or spirits) or furnishings. It's not exactly clinical, but then I wouldn't like it if it was, but it's far from dirty and scruffy.

I would like to say that as a regular visitor to the Barge, i have always found it clean and the staff cheerful and polite. Simon and Sally do a great job. Personally i think it is wrong to make comments on here, if you are not prepared to make them at the time while you are there giving Simon and Sally the opportunity to put things right and deal with your complaint.

The Barge is a great pub, full of character. I've seen the weird duck, will we be seeing it on the menu? No need for hoi sin if it's already in orange sauce though.

Noticed the clock behind the bar was put forward fifteen minutes early last sunday!.. cheeky early finish for the landlords birthday! That's fair enough thats the gaffer's perogative.. but why not just be honest with the customers? Felt the bar staff were a bit ignorant by insulting the punters intelligence??????

And a big well done to The Barge for getting into the 2009 CAMRA Good Beer Guide which just thudded through my letterbox. [:D] Nigel (White Horse) & Bev at the OX are now regulars (well done to both) but I know Sally & Simon have been trying hard for this one. For those unacquainted with the mechanisms, pubs are chosen by members of the Campaign, it’s a tough audience to persuade & numbers are limited by population; a town the size of Hertford would normally be lucky to get two pubs in..

No, the Black Horse is not in this year. It was withdrawn when we knew we were moving, hence a vacancy for Hertford. The Old Barge replaced the Black Horse. The people at the BH at the moment are only temporary and the future unknown. The pub itself has to be recommended by a CAMRA member before 31st January to be included in the GBG survey for the following year's guide. South Herts branch has a certain number of entries allowed and that number is split into regions within the branch area. All very complex!! Yes, The Woodman at Chapmore End is still in the GBG. Because we were known GBG tenants with a good reputation, the members voted to keep the Woodman in the guide.

The pub clock is 5 minutes fast. I double checked. Exactly 5 minutes. I put it like that so we have a 5 minute head start when closing the pub, and to deter people intentionally ordering large rounds at the very last knockings, because they invariably take ages to finish them. Here's a tip. Listen to the first bell. last orders finishes exactly 10 minutes after that one.[8D] Thanks for the positive !![:D]

The pub seems to be a little cleaner because my shoes were not sticking to the floor, I never met Sally but I think I bumped into Olive never got a chance to introduce my self though unfortunately. that has to be one of the worst reviews ever! All it does is moan about the place but not a single reason to back up any issues? If you've not eaten there, why did you influence your friends to eat elsewhere? If you had eaten there, maybe you'd have realised that the food is excellent, especially the skillets. My feet have never stuck to the floor - you should check for chewing gum on your shoes in future - publandlord may not appreciate you ruining his floorboards!!!

Where did I say that my feet stuck to the floor on this occasion? read the post again, perhaps I should have said it's over 3 years since I last visited The Old Barge and my shoes were sticking to the floor then, however I don't recall having chewing gum stuck to my shoes. Thankyou for the information if I do visit again I will check the soles of my shoes just before I enter the building because I have no intention to upset publandlord. I did comment in my post that the pub is looking a little cleaner so how is that negative? No problems I just did not like the atmosphere in the pub and decided that I would like to eat elsewhere with friends. This is only my opinion, perhaps I may go back in the near future, taste the food and enjoy the atmosphere, whatch this forum for further comments.

As taken from wiktionary.org A country mile means 'A long way, a great distance' :-) (not sure how to add smilies) Anyhoo the barge is my No.1 pub in town as is has such a good choice of real ale as well as cider and for me that's what matter most in a pub. Plus the fact the location is spot on, it all adds up to a very nice pub. The OXT is a nice pub too. Hope that clears things up.

I actually drink copious quantities of McMullens AK and Cask. The Country Bitter however always gives me an upset stomach, and that's not just one pub's beer either. Having said that, Country does seem to be available in fewer and fewer pubs. Back on topic, The Barge is an excellent all round pub and we shall be there tonight for the Jazz.

Apologies if mentioned already...not got time to read 18 pages [:I] We (a team of 6-8 people) go to The Old Barge Sunday night quiz every fortnight and thoroughly enjoy ourselves [:D] However what we have noticed is that the cheating (and it does go on, seen it myself a few times) invariably happens in the long pause between the end of the quiz and the results being announced. We all feel that this would be greatly reduced if the answer forms were collected in the same way as the 'Beer Round' i.e you get 2/3 minutes to get your answers in to be marked or you are excluded. Either that or the forms are simply collected ASAP. I know this makes me sound like a boring old f*rt but it does spoil the fun when you know people have been cheating. Thanks for listening [:D] great pub.

You will notice that as soon as the Students go back to Uni, there are smaller groups and far less, if not zero, cheating. They come back from Uni and would do anything to win 70 quid, and have a more 'robust' attitude to the quiz in general. I'm not knocking them, half of them have worked for me at some time in the past few years, but this is definitely what happens. Roll on 2 weeks time (we'll get our quiz back!). Hi Mr P. Landlord. You've certainly taken to the forums like things that take to other things I see. I notice today that Punch and Judy are trying desperately to raise a few quid to pay their rent by the end of the year. How ironic that they should have the tables turned having given their tenants such a hard time of things recently. Sounds like they are the bottom 500 performers in the estate (of well over 8,000) and they were all written down in value just before Xmas by up to 60%. Whether any were actually viable or not, I can't really say, but the fact is that Punch are really desperate for any cash, so if you were to make them a 'reasonable' offer for the place, you may well get lucky. If you'd like (i.e. need) to have a sleeping partner in on the purchase, just let me know on here and I'll pop down for a chat. Not in it for the money, just want a really good free house with lots of choice. Yours is probably one of the best little pubs in town... well run too.

The Jazz night at the Old Barge this evening was quite simply fantastic, one of the best I've been to in my opinion - the quartet played some highly original stuff, a lot of it based on European folk music. It was well worth the FREE entry (And the couple of bottles of Racers & Rascals we worked our way through ...) Thanks to John W for all of the hard work he puts in to book the acts!

I was in the Barge last Friday night and they P'eed off a lot of customers, including myself. I hate it when bar staff ring the bell over 5 mins early. They rang the bell, and whisked the till drawers away with much haste. I mean in seconds. It was quite clearly early, and when me and about four or five other customers queried it and tried to get a drink, they simply said (the smirking bar staff), their watches all said 11. When I asked to see one of the watches, they refused. Needless to say, we'll be taking our custom elsewhere next week.

In these difficult times, pubs and shops need all the customers they can get, so having a bit of patience and being flexible with closing time will help keep customers happy and coming back. Upset them and they will go elsewhere.

Just back from the "Rather Posh" wine tasting evening held at The Old Barge this evening. It was an absolutely brilliant night out and very good value for money with some exceptional wines accompanied by a well thought out selection of tasting dishes. A premium champagne, two very interesting whites, three great reds plus a desert wine that went oh so well with the St Augere cheese, all followed by a stunningly good port. Well done to Simon & Sally for laying on something just a little bit different - when's the next one please??

Nice pint. Gotta say I had a very very nice pint of Orkney, Red McGregor today. Lovely pint 4%, nice amber colour. Had to have a second just to make sure. Publandlord - have you ever had that in the barge?

visited the Barge Friday lunchtime, can't fault the beer great pint of Deuchars, bit pricey at £3.20. But disappointed with the sausage sandwich I got for lunch. Basically two sausages in a bun with bit of wilted lettuce and couple cherry toms, not worth the £5 I paid for it.[:(]

I love the Barge but I'm always freaked when I go to the loo due to the transvestite/Peeping Tom Vic Reeves. Any chance he'll be vacating the premises soon?

I'd no idea that Vic Reeves was a Barge regular. Respect Simon, an ace bloke! Would never have thought he was a tranny/peepy type, thankfully he's not an alleged friend of Peter File as well. Maybe Mr Anorak should piss in the canal for safety... beware of the candirú though....

Apologies for the inadvertent gender reassignment Ms Anorak. You have my sympathies. Whatever Simon earns from running this advert is not worth the trauma caused. In retrospect, the canal seems a far better choice.

I'm not sure what's going on, but my last couple of visits to The Old Barge have been very disappointing. Most recently was a visit for a Sunday roast yesterday afternoon. Aside from the fact it looked like the food had been thrown at the (far too small) plate, the quality of the meat was absolutely terrible. The meat was barely recognisable as beef and was fatty to the point of being inedible. In fact, I'm not even sure the amount of meat was greater than the fat attached to it! The roast I had at Van Hages a few weeks ago was a few pounds more expensive, but was vastly better in quality and in quantity (served on properly sized plates for the portions offered too). On my previous visit I had an evening when it seemed almost every cask ale was rotten. I took the first one back and accepted an alternative, only to find that it and subsequent alternatives were equally as rank. In the end I accepted defeat and moved on to run-of-the-mill bottled beers. I can't say I find it particularly tempting to return any time soon. This is particularly frustrating because when I first moved to Hertford 5 years ago The Old Barge was a haven of good food and good beer.

What were the responses you received when you informed the management of your complaints for both food and beer?

Woody, on both occasions the staff were very polite and offered to replace the food/beer.

It's good to hear that the staff were polite in responding to you. It will be interesting to hear Pub Landlord and/or Olive's management perspective as their ale and food does, generally, have a good reputation.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, kerralexander, I can only apologise for what seems to be an unfortunate run of events. The meat in question was a fore rib of beef obtained from Butlers the butchers, who are usually very good at providing us with meat. I'm sure you'll be aware that it does have marbles of fat in that cut, but we beleive that this imparts alot of flavour into the joint. It may be the case that the slices we bought to your table were particularly fatty, but I'm glad to hear that they were replaced politely. As for the beer, I'm surprised to hear that no less than 3 of our beers were actually rotten at the same time. I can understand that sometimes a particular beer (especially if from a smaller microbrewer - they can go off more quickly)can go bad fairly quickly at the end of the barrel, but 3 (or more) that were actually 'rank' at once shocks me. I will needless to say, double my efforts to keep a good range of beers in first class order, but it would be a great help if you could remember the specific night in question, so that I can check back and see what beers we were serving at the time. Once again, I apologise. Si

Thanks for your reply Publandlord. I should stress that I've enjoyed previous Sunday roasts at The Barge, but this beef was like no beef I'd been served by you before. I definitely agree that meat needs fat to add flavour and stop the meat from drying out during cooking, but this really does depend on the meat being properly cooked. It did seem fairly busy when we were in, so I'm not sure how much pressure the kitchen was under. I'm not sure of the exact date of my visit with regards to my earlier visit. From memory it was a quiz night towards the end of November or start of December. I must admit it did put me off coming again as we'd taken friends there on the promise of good ale. Sadly they were disappointed. Thanks again for taking the time to respond. I am sure I've just been unlucky, but given my usual good experiences it was disappointing to have two poor experiences in a row.

Popped into the barge on St Paddys day. As usual the staff were quite excellent, we sat down the bottom and they popped an Irish film on to accompany the Guinness we were drinking. Great atmosphere and top class service along with some tasty food I was surprised was still being served at that time. Cheers!

I reckon the Barge is selling the best real ale in Hertford! I used to think it was too expensive but the others have now caught up and the standard is spot on at the Barge!! Had Tribute and Colley's Dog last night. Just a shame you can't take dogs in (whoof whoof ones).

Agreed And. I would use the barge much more often if I could take the dog in. As i'm always walking him past there but can't stop for a real ale. Guess the dog is happy but I miss out on a good beer..

Just wanted to thank The Barge for an enjoyable Sunday evening. The wife & I went out in the early evening for a meal at one of the town's many restaurants to celebrate my impending birthday and decided to stop in here on the way back home for a drink or two as we were informed by our babysitters (the in-laws) that we weren't to return before 10.30pm as they were watching a BBC drama! We strolled in and found ourselves somewhere to sit without realising/remembering that the weekly quiz was soon to start. Anyway the pair of us entered, finished respectably somewhere mid-table and spent a thoroughly enjoyable (and unexpected) couple of hours there....I wonder if the in-laws would be willing to come over again soon for us to return and aim for an improved finish!

Should I suppose go under Local History but a very enjoyable Murder Mystery enactment last night. Done with the help of the UoH it referred to the Thurtell murder case from 1823 (OK, Admin, it happened in Rsdlett, but it was tried in Hertford). Basically the re-enactment was that of the Coroner's Inquest & 11 good men (well, ok ,locals from the pub) were chosen to determine the cause of death of one William Weare. Great interactive performances from all; damn good night. Thanx Sally & Si. [:)]'
