Is The Mercury just a Tabloid?
During my usual Friday 'read' of the Mercury today I was horrified to see the section named 'PET IDOL' where people send in picures of their pets so people can vote for their favourite. (not forgetting that only a few weeks ago we had 'baby Idol')
How on earth can The Mercury justify this tabloid lower class trash as local news? ... doesn't this go against their Memorandum and Articles of Association?
Also, whatever next? ... Grandma Idol? ..... or god forbid 'Chav Idol'? .......... what other 'Idol' format can people come up with?

I don't quite see the point. If they called it 'Pet of the month' would that be better or ar you against the whole idea of 'idol'?

Azzza, I share the uneasy relationship that many local residents have with The Mercury. Its journalism is shabby, its writing poor but apart from this website it's all we've got for local news - The Merc's only competition, the Hertford Times (from the Welwyn Times stable) was even worse and folded after a year or so.
Did you notice that last week the Mercury had a whole page devoted to a review of a play put on by a private theatre company in someone's garden? Only friends of the garden owner and the cast could attend! How elitist is that and how can it possibly be of interest to the wider community, none of whom could watch the play even if they wanted to! My neighbour's kids are putting on a little play in their garden right now, the Mercury might as well send along a reviewer to that!
But Mercury, all is forgiven following Pet Idol. [8D] It's brilliant, the funniest thing I've seen in a local paper. [:)] People have sent in snapshots of their pets which include many startled-looking cats, dogs in comedy hats, terrifying close-ups of small rodents, Honky the Donkey and something that appears to be a sea-anemone, but on closer inspection is a rather poor photo of a long-haired dog. It's priceless and Azzza, if you can peruse this utterly British bit of fun without a smile, then I fear for your cold black soul [;)][:D]

How about Idle Idol?
How about a Beer Belly Idol (male and/or female), or Most Expensive Stick-On Go Faster Junk on Worthless Car idol? You'll laugh so much it will make you weep......
Quality.
