We ate at the Peking House again tonight, and we felt it was at least as good as it has always been. My ratings: Food 4, Service 5, Atmosphere 3, Facilities n/a (we didn't use them!), Value 4. What we need in Hertford is a Chinese that offers a bit of a different menue. Does anyone know where there are any such places in the surrounding areas?

Finally got round to trying Restaurant 22 and we were not disappointed. Especially welcome was the absence of MSG in the food, which all tasted delicious. Also, they don't allow smoking, and the atmosphere/decor is really good. Portion sizes a bit mean if you are a greedy pig like me. Main negative is the price, but this wasn't a surprise. However, the £1 per head "cover charge" is not welcome (tiny dish of peanuts to start plus mint imperials to help the bill go down).

Long's is opposite where the Kwik Fit used to be in Hertford... near Tesco or maybe thats Lams? I've lost it! lol Wok-U-Like are in Ware my bad, I meant Hertford AND Ware need decent chinese takeaway! :S Peking House is superb indeed, as is paddy Fields, but they dont do takeaway afaik? :(

Paddy Fields does do takeaway I had some last night! You have to go a pick it up though but that doesn't matter much. And very nice it was too.

Oh my god, I think I was on drugs last night - not literally I dont touch them! lol.... god knows what was on my brain yesterday lol. What I meant was a delivery service, I suppose I've got to get off my back side and collect the food if I want decent stuff :-) Paddy Fields is very good though!

I like the carrot sculptures, birds, flowers and pagodas, that one of the staff or owner makes. I took one home once and put it in the freezer and its still there. I’ll have to defrost it and eat it at some point.

I agree about a chinese takeaway delivery service......I have often wondered why the ones in Hertford dont deliver.....Use Wok U Like but it took over an hour the other day.....

^ yep... Wok U Like used to be pretty good but now the quality of the food isnt that great, avoid the sweet & sour chicken.... :-(

and be careful to do the maths before you phone them. They always try to charge us the £1 delivery charge even though we're always over the £15 minimum and qualify for free delivery. They've never quibbled our quibble, the food's good, the hot & sour soup needs a dash more vinegar but that's personal preference and yes, we have them most because they deliver.

One of the established Chinese either restaurant/t'away could do good business delivering in Hertford. & to be honest prepared to pay a small(repeat small) addition to save the hassle of going back out & collecting (& I live in the town centre....!) particularly in the winter months. Oh dear Mrs CP not looking too pleased about this..... Anyway maybe starting to stray off-topic.. I think the initial thread was for something different from the "normal" menus we've had for years

I suppose Chinese food is likely to be very like.......Chinese food. If it was significantly different it would be just food, prepared by Chinese staff, which is not the same thing. Is this standard fare authentic in any way or based on anything Chinese? It seems identical in France, Spain, USA or wherever purchased. Maybe, like McDonalds, standardisation is the aim and altering the menu away from the old favourites considered unwise. One can order from one take away, using the menu from another! Maybe the majority like it that way and find it comfortable. Maybe we would be as unlikely to find sweet and sour pork balls in China as Chicken Tikka Masala in India. Any Chinese persons in catering or otherwise on this forum?

I tried out a new Chinese in Hoddesdon on Friday night called Long's - very good they were too, the food was fantastic..... however they dont do deliveries to Hertford even though they put the menu through my door - I mentioned that to them..... :/
