ref a Gay pub or bar in Hertford

Hertford is growing by the day,and as it's got, everything else, even a sex shop, its time it had a gay pub or bar like other towns and cities in England.Gay people are now very high profile in all things ,and can even have civil partnerships,( a lot of local hotels etc in the area offer gay people good deals for this),so why not a gay bar in Hertford, perhaps not right in the town centre, but nearby, the Barge would be ideal ,anyone got any ideas,or will Hertford go down as the most homephobic town in England

I think its more a case that most pubs in Hertford are already swamped. I Dont think any publicans feel there is any need to risk an untried venture at this point when you only have to open the front door of a pub in Hertford and the tills start ringing.... Maybe further out of town like you say but the Barge is deff considered in town.

I think it would be unfair to say Hertford is THE most homophobic town in the country. It is probably ONE OF THE most homophobic twons in the country, due to its middle class, ageing, conservative population. There was some talk on a previous thread about a pub in Hertingfordbury being pink. Might have changed now.

The Prince of Wales ,Hertingfordbury was ran by two gay gays from june 2004 to june2005 ,and was very good for what it was,but they did not have the money to make it better,so left, who could blame them

that sounds a bit off - the gay friends I have don't have an issue with 'drinking with the rest of us' I am unsure if a completely gay venue would go down well in Hertford totally but an adventurous landlord might be willing to put on a theme night once a month perhaps

What proves your point ??!! If you class the Barge as Out Of Town then fine, each to their own but its only 3 min walk from all the other Bars and Restaurants. To me thats not out of town. Quite aggressive for a new boy !

Far from it you must be very thick if you think this is not genuine,my original question why not a gay bar in Hertford, that was answered quite quick ,its a yob town with chavs who could not cope with it,everywhere else in England yes ,but not "dear lovely old "Hertford. For what it is worth ,I do not eat ,drink ,socialise in this town what so ever, but it must be very hard for young gay guys and girls in this town, who have not come out, to cope with such a alien social scene.Im "out of here" early next year, and before anyone says why am I here ,my mother's family is one of East Herts oldest farmimg families, and my fathers's family go back generations in Hertford., so I know a lot about this town

rgs_rick, if you want a gay pub so badly, why don't you just move? There's a great one in Hampstead called William IV, so get on the train from Hertford with a one-way ticket if you think Hertford's so bad.

I was prepared to be a voice of reason here but you've just lost me with a whole load of nonsense. If you've got nothing sensible to say and are just here to spout vitriole and trade insults, I suggest you keep your mouth shut. Whatever you may think, you don't know it all, and people here ARE prepared to accept others from different backgrounds, with different faiths and beliefs, even to the extent of accepting homosexuality in the local community. What people won't accept is the ones who go about with a chip on their shoulder feeling let down and hard done by.

Wow - I go away for 2 days and come back to all this sh**e! Sill not convinced if its a wind up... Sorry Rick but I can't believe your attitude can do your obvious 'cause' any good - if you are so needing of a gay bar why dont you open one - if theres the demand in the town it will do well and good luck to it. I object to the homophobic slur on the town too [:(!]- gay/straight, black/white it should make no difference - but yet again it seems that only white heterosexuals can be bigots. And do you think that in Spain you are going to avoid the yob culture with which you tar Hertford? You have stirred up a hornets nest with your post my friend - unfortunately with it you will only succeed in reinforcing the predudices some parts of society have. Reading rgs_rick's original post again I think he was doing okay until he wrote, "or will Hertford go down as the most homephobic town in England". The suggestion that the fact that no one has decided to open a gay pub in the town classes it as homophobic is nonsense and was provocative. It smacks of a minority lashing out. Gay people have as much opportunity to open a gay bar as heterosexuals. So I assume the fact that none of Hertford's gay citizens have opened a gay bar either means they are also homophobic.

I have a few lads and lassies (gay freinds) that come in my pub. On asking them a question related to this thread of gay bars in Hertford they replied why would we want one bar when we can go where we like. If we had one bar it would be a target and not very nice for straights that go there. In my opinion the selection of people that come into my pub are happy to share there space with anyone and everyone (except ronaldo). I would think this of any pub in Hertford of which I know many and find them all to be friendly places

Having read Rick's posts on this issue, I am struck by the sweeping generalisations, paranoia, hostility and prejudice that characterises his submissions. People that might otherwise have had some sympathy with his postion are attacked and insulted without any attempt at rational discussion. I can only conclude that he is deeply uncomfortable with his sexuality and can only deal with this by blaming everyone else. In fact I suspect that his problems may extend beyond his sexuality. There is a strong "victim" mentality to his childish postings. I'm sorry to appear personal but Rick appears to be very unhappy - an unhappiness that I suspect is very much of his own making. Unfortunately, blaming everyone else for his problems and running away to Spain will not resolve them.

There used to be a well known gay and lesbian friendly pub in Hertford, it was well frequented by all members of the community, gay lesbian and straight.... It used to be known as the Three Tuns in St. Andrews Street, and was a great place for a night out as they used to hav the most lively party nights. The great thing about this place was everyone rubbed shoulders with everyone else, and everyone respected the others point of view / sexuality..... What has happened to this pub? Following several rapid changes in management it is now a Thai Restuarant... What happened to the people that used to frequent this pub? They are now scattered across Hertford enjoying what the town has on offer for everyone! A gay friendly pub, is only so while there is the commitment of the landlords for it to be such, there doesn't seem to be that much financial gain in doing it anymore, and at the end of the day it's profit and targets that matters to those owning the pub.

am amazed at the negative response to this topic. i don't believe rick is asking too much for one pub in hertford to be labelled a 'gay' bar/pub. this is quite standard and for people showing their true feelings in straight pubs, this is usually quite uncomfortable and i know of a lot of hostility and sometimes violence towards gay couples in hertford. maybe hertford isn't the cosmopolitan town you all think it is?

Rick's original post was okay until he suggested that Hertford was going to be the most homophobic town in England unless someone opened up a gay bar.

Agree with Jay that you create a stigma if you label something "The Gay Bar". Why should we have a pub/restaurant or whatever for one group of people. It is as prejudiced as Hertford is apparently homophobic. Jay is also right in that people would be intimidated or even attacked for drinking in there whereas they can drink anywhere without necessarily being targeted due to their sexual choice.

Stirred up a right " hornets nest" here,I have one last point to make on all this.Never said we want a high profile "Gay Bar " in Hertford ,but just say a out of the way bar, were gay people can be thereselves etc.I was in Luton yesterday ,a multi cultured town if ever there was one, bigger then Hertford yes,two gay pubs ,two gay clubs,no problem ,there whatsoever, and they cannot be no mistake they are gay because of the gay flags outside. If a place like Luton can do it ,why not Hertford.Although I must say,I think not, because returning to Hertford last night at 9pm,the town seemed to be full of kids who looked about 15,shouting and screaming, and girls who looked like cheap"hookers",and Hartham Common is just awful, gangs of kids, who should be home in bed just wandering around ,what was once a nice park and safe even at night.I conclude and concede on all this ,no Hertford will never have a so called " gay bar " ever, but thats its lost, but a further deterioration of a once pround county town, which now is "yobsville",thank god I not be here to see much more of it.By the way Ware is still a very nice town ,most of the time

You should have read the Terms and Conditions before you registered, not now! For someone who has only been registered for two days, you have managed to tally up more posts than some who have been here a year! As for your 'beef', I for one am sick of reading your opinion that everyone is against a pub for gay people. I have many friends who have gay and lesbian tendancies and they do not want to 'stand out in the crowd'. They are quite happy using the same clubs, pubs and bars as everyone else, and have been for years. Why shouldn't they? The way you go on gives me the impression that you consider yourself a number one priority in the sexuality stakes. You are not. If you can't bring yourself to use the clubs, pubs and bars that are already at your disposal, leave town, sooner rather than later. The gay couples that come into our pub, and I say this as a licensee in Hertford, are treated no different to anyone else. They don't need to be. We are all flesh and blood regardless of the colour of our skins, our religions or our sexual preferences. For goodness sake, GET A LIFE. You are 48 years old according to your profile - grow up.

Here here rooster. I'm a licencee and find the gay population that use my pub to be great to be around, drink with and have a good old sing song. Now you seem to be of the opinion that we are all homophobic. I know for a fact that myself and all my regulars straight, bi, lesbian or gay we are all happy for new, old or in the closet to share our space, our town, our beer. Why would you want to alienate yourself or your social group when you can walk into any pub in Hertford and be welcomed with open arms? I get the impression that you have had a bad experiance in Hertford and I for one am sorry that you have. My gay friends who have come from London, Stevenage and Luton have all said how nice they find Hertford. I have a friend called Kevin who has just come back from Spain and said how nice it was to be home in a town where he can be himself (he was originally in Ware before he left). You seem very hard to bring round but I will say this please don't put everyone in Hertford down in the same catagory as the ones that upset you or think that anyone on this site is against you in anyway because we are not. If there was a call for a gay bar in Hertford there would of been one by now. The reason that this has not happened is there is no need, we all live in a town where we can all get along I havent seen a gay hate crime in this town and the only thing you might do is cause a problem yourself by talking and being this way. I hope you don't air your views out in public like the way you have on this site, the gay community of Hertford are more than free to do as they please in this town just the same as anyone else we dont live in the dark ages we know what the deal is. You're gay it doesnt make you special in anyway you're the same as everyone else in this town please feel free to come into my pub at anytime, you are more than welcome. I'm not a gay bar, I'm a pub where everyone is welcome no matter what their point of view sexual, religious or otherwise and I'm sure that goes for the rest of the pubs in Hertford. I hope if and when you move that where ever you go you are happy and you find what you are looking for what ever it is but please just know this one final thing Hertford is not the be all and end all but it is our home and we love it and it is what you make of it. Hertford loves you to be happy its summer[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

One very final word on this topic, and also my very last vist to this site.I see over 1200 people have read this topic which in some way is very good, but just a small amount have commented on the topic,so by the odds of things, perhaps many other people agree with me.Why this as been turned about to be a inquest over me,then my origanal topic ,"why not a gay bar in Hetford" says more about the people who have said some really nasty things about someone they do not know, then the topic itself.Let me come to the two publicians, the guy jayzee sounds a real nice guy,and I take on board what he says(I know his pub very well over the years)and by the way I have never heard so many nasty comments on this guys posts ref his grammer, for god sake the guy is dyslectic, which reinforces my view that there are some very nasty people on this website, anyway thank you jayzee for your comments. To the other landlord (rooster I think)for all his bluster about he is happy with all types of people in his pub,let me put this to him,if a gang of gay guys come into his crowded pub and started to held hands and kiss each other ,he soon be asking them to stop it,if a gang of straight boys and girls done the same thing in the pub, nothing would be said, and before you say the gay guys would not be treated like that ,I seen that happen in a pub in Hertford recently, and the guys were ask to leave the pub.Its a fact till the whole world is just more tolarant ,they always be gay bars etc,and ref the gay people that go into straight pubs to be accepted it says more about them, and not really being there true selves, and deep down they want to be straight.Hertford I will always love, its been part of my whole life,as my father's family have been here for a very long time, but the people of Hertford now ,and what they have done to this town ,is something I hate and next year will leave it for ever. One day I know for sure there will be a gay bar in Hertford,(there always be gay bars its part of the gay culture they never die out),and if that happens if I am well enough and be able to get back I be there flying the gay flag even if i live to 100.Thats my last word on all this, its been intresting, but also sad.

Rick, Why do you assume that I am a landLORD?? You have no idea at all. We (my partner and I) welcome all to our pub. We have had gay couples holding hands and kissing but they still come back. WHY? because they were never asked to leave on the previous occasions. I have been in the company of many lesbian friends for many years and I treat no-one any differently. I have gay friends in Hertford who specifically come to see us and drink here because we are their friends and they do not feel alienated here. A pub/club/bar specifically for gay/lesbian people really is not needed in Hertford, surely you can see that. I am sure you are a very sensible and loving person, but please get off your 'high horse' and as I said before, grow up and get a life.

I am going to say one word, 'paragraphs', they are brilliant things, another one is 'sentences' another cunning little device. I must admit I was always a bit of a smart arse when we did syntax, but I realy do think this thread is the perfect illustration of why these little devices are so important. Some of the posts are really difficult to follow!

What gets on my nerves about gays is that they're on a mission all the time. Generally, everyone is tolerated so long as they go about their business (or leisure) without making a nuisance of themselves. So why must gays keep whingeing about things? I'm a bachelor. I don't think it's quite normal to be one at my age, 43, when most people are married with children. But I don't rant, and start demanding "Bachelor Bars". And I don't seek to promote myself either.

Paul, you're obviously sticking to your "voice of reason" stance. Perhaps I could have been less emphatic, and I should say I don't believe all gays are on a mission. Don't you see my point though? Anyone in Hertford, or most towns, can go out for a drink in whatever pub they happen to chance by. I've worked behind a bar (still do, as a matter of fact), and when people walk in you don't think "are they gay?" You get on and serve them. When you get to know them, most of them have some problem or other - they've been waiting months for an operation; they've been on the housing list for years with no joy - but they don't blame the rest of the human race.

This is moving off topic a bit but you are in danger of making rick's point for him by stereotyping and making sweeping generalisations. Perhaps rick could have his own little corner in a designated bar where he could go and have a moan with all the other gay people in the area to keep them away from your bar?

Reply ID 20889

Believe me, customers moan whatever their sexual orientation! I think your last sentence comes close to being a generalisation too. I think that if you look for prejudice you will find it, because you've convinced yourself it's there. I was born in Hertford, and lived there until my twenties, after which I've lived and worked in a few different places. One of these was Wantage, a nice little country town at the foot of the Berkshire Downs. The criticism I used to hear about Wantage is very similar to that you hear about Hertford - ageing population, middle class, conservative, and so on. I used to defend the place as if it were my home town, because I liked it. But I often think these critics, who seem to remain in the place they despise, would never be happy anywhere for long. When you consider what Hertford does have, I think the issue of whether or not there's a gay bar is relatively minor. Few other towns have a large green area (Hartham) so close to the town centre. Up the Warren from there is St Leonard's Church, the oldest in the county. Moreover the town centre is very attractive: the unique pargeting in Fore Street, and the charm of St. Andrew's Street, for example. Let us not forget, either, the world's oldest Friends' Meeting House and its lovely brickwork. No doubt there are more enlightened and progressive places, with glass and concrete looking all very smart and new. My own preference, though, is for these ageing, conservative towns and their quirky characters.

One of the reasons that Hertford doesn't have a "gay pub" is probably quite simple, economics. There simply isn't a big enough resident gay population to keep one in business imo. (Sorry if this point has been made before but I couldn't be bothered to read every post in the thread)

There is a good chance that some of us are gay, in which case we might want to frequent the bar you propose. Are we not allowed because we don't originate from within 10 yards of Gravesons? What about the money and investment that we bring to the town? And where do you think we come from - we fall out of the trees? And to think I thought I was the only one out there! I wasn't going to contribute to this thread as it was getting too...heated, but then saw the above cry for comradeship and had to respond. "Outoftowners" can imply born and bred in the next village/town, the language of my home county calls them "Locals"[:)]. "Incomers" meant the next county (or worse: a "City"[:0]) and their accents were completely different so they got ignored for the first 20 years[:)]. I've "not been a local" for all my varied life; Hertford is the first place where I feel at home and accepted. It's a good town. My new, normal[V], family always tease me about being Wiltshire-born, but now I can tell them that there are others out there like me and they'd better shut up or I'll send out the call to my femur-collecting brothers & sisters and, boy will they be sorry! I wondered if there was a reason my mother won't talk about certain things, particularly when asked why I was the only kid in the valley to go to a primary school called Porton Down Biological Research Facility. Do you find the webbed feet are great for swimming, too? I would have been in the olympic team if they could only find me a swimming goggle for my one eye. Hello Rick, "Ageing", "quirky", and "conservative" apply to me? Yes, they probably do. The one thing we both seem to have in common is a dislike of yobs. As these tend to be younger than we are, we can both be described as "ageing", at least in attitude towards them. "Quirky"? Yes that probably applies to me too, in that I'm interested in things the majority of people don't appear to be. Are you? "Conservative"? (With a small 'c'.) That certainly applies to me. I'm uneasy about change, and suspicious when it appears to have been introduced without any consultation - you may or may not have read my complaint about them closing paths on the Meads. But I think you have conservative characteristics too; regarding newcomers to the town, for example.

So rick, when you lived in Ware you were a troublesome outoftowner or does that not count because you were relatively local? What a wonderful world you advocate, where everyone stays in the village, borough or whatever they come from. It is hard to imagine what that would be like. Hang on.... didn't you say you wanted to become an expat in Spain? You are indeed a mass of contradictions.... unless the rules only apply to others and not to yourself. I wish you well, and hopefully you won't meet others in Spain as biased and narrowminded as yourself.

rgs_rick By your reckoning the pubs in Hertford are Homophobic, Sexist, Racist and any other form of prejudice you can think of. We don't have Women Nights, Asian Nights for Asians, Men Nights, Straight Nights etc. Why does not having a gay night make us homophobic?

Have not read all the posts so apologies if I am repeating anything. I think anyone who thinks that Hertford is Homophobic are very much mistaken. Just because there is no particular bar does it mean that Gay's feel like outcasts. I have quite a few friends who are Gay and a while ago was discussing the very same subject with them. They felt there was not a need and in fact it could cause problems for the Gay individuals. They may not have 'come out' to friends, family, employers, etc. A would not frequent such a place. To be accepted in any environment is far better than to hide away.

One final thing about gay pub in Hertford,a few years back a gay guy managed the Blackbirds(what a awful place now) and quite a few gay people want there. Also the Three Tuns (now a Thai eating place)was managed by a gay guy ,then later by two gay girls, with a lot of gay people going there. But with the state of Hertford now, that would not be possable today I think.

You know, I don't like labels much. I think pubs (and everything else, for that matter) should be run by Ian and Jenny, or Sarah and Sue, or Dave and Paul. It should be irrelevant what their tastes are in private life. Tchaikovsky wrote wonderful music, and he was homosexual. Mozart also wrote some wonderful music, and he was heterosexual. Would you only listen to Tchaikovsky?

I used to go in the Three Tuns when the ladies ran it. It wasn't what I would call a gay pub. In fact I recall the regulars as being a bunch of football shirt wearing Arsenal supporters. Perhaps they were gay. I always saw it as a normal, every day pub that just happened to be run by a couple of gay girls.

Come off it Ewoowar, there were regularly loads of gay women in there! The Two Tuns was never a very popular pub though. Although I do take the point that rqs.rick made about gay people not feeling free to hold hands or show affection in public (one of the few good points he has made), they probably would be commented upon and stared at. However, there really does not seem to be the demand for a gay pub! if the Two Tuns is anything to go by. I think public attitudes have moved on quite a bit over the past ten years or so, but clearly not enough.

I had more of a problem with the Arsenal fans than the supposed mass of gay people that Rick dreamt he saw. How about a petition banning Arsenal fans. Hertford is a Tottenham town!!! Seriously though I don't mind ANY people holding hands in public but I do object to people groping each other. I think that Rik in a perverse sort of way is more stereotypical in his thought process than all us Hertfordians put together.

Glad you liked it. I was offered a job in Brighton. I spent some time down there to check out the town itself and the neighbnouring towns and villages. Brighton had more homeless and street beggars than I ever saw when I worked in central London. I would not move there for plenty of reasons but none of these are linked to the way the town embraces it's gay culture. I guess the two towns could learn a lot from each other. In many ways they are very different. However Hertford doesn't have to become like Brighton in order to improve, nor does Brighton have to change to become more like Hertford.

Steve. My point - Does anyone point the finger at you because you live where you do? Does anyone question what you do? Why should the people of Hertford be compared to the people of Brighton beacause of their sexual preference. We are all the same. Ewoowar might have an opinion of her own, but I disagree with it. She has suggested that Brighton and Hertford are not alike. The people here in Hertford are the same for God's sake. Can't anyone realise that?

I guess the two towns could learn a lot from each other. In many ways they are very different.
Ewoowar. They are just towns. Put your Daily Mail down. Are you another scare mongerer? Let people be. There is nothing to learn. Gay people have been around for years and there are many gay people in Hertford. This topic of 'should we, shouldn't we?' is a joke. Do you pick your nose? Do you ride a bike? The very very last point im making on this topic, its now geitting very round and round, but it comes back to the point that Hertford will never have a gay pub or bar because of the people that live in the town, the ref to Brighton is not off topic at all,Brighton as far more poor people then Hertford, but as far more gay people too ,but it still as gay bars for gay people so in a open town like that ,gays go and be with like minded people, why cannot the people on here accept that, they can go to there footie type pubs etc so many of them in Hertford ,all i ask and a lot more gay people in Hertford too is ONE maybe Small gay bar MAYBE just out of town , not much to ask,and by the way i was begged for mony in Hertford the other day,so please do not put Brighton down like that.I do take onboard all the people have said about this topic on here, its as got so boring i give up ,only one person really upset more,a very rude person called "Bob a Job" how dare this person comment on me,they know nothing about me and my connection to Hertford ,to be fair none of the other comments have been so personal,by the way I meet the film director Woody Allen in Brighton this week,he is going to make is next film in England ,about a group of gay people living in a small english county town, and how hard is is for them to "come out" there, wonder were that can be,end of story ,end of topic no more ,have a nice rest of year. p.s. I might stay in Hertford till the new Weatherspoons pub opens, but I think that be 2050 so I think i go !!!!

Deep breath rgs, deep breath! Agree with you, but if it was slap bang in the town centre it wouldn't bother me. Don't pander to some of the numpties you have come across, if you want to be gay and proud then be gay and proud. It's fine by me.

I think the people here DO accept that people will want to go and be with like minded others. However it feels like you are waiting for someone to set it up for you and blaming Hertford people for it not happening. I think you antagonised people by suggesting that Hertford was homophobic and thereby making statements relating to those who post on this web site. If you don't want people to judge you, and I don't by the way, then don't judge others.

Unfortunately Chavs have as much right to frequent the pubs in Hertford as Gay people - ultimately market forces will dictate the type of pubs in Hertford. If lots of Chavs frequent a pub then it is likely to become a Chav Pub, If lots of Gay people frequent a pub then it is likely to become a Gay Pub. Yes there are other factors involved like location, beer and ambience that will influence what type of clientelle visit an establishment, but ultimately it is the customers that drive the market not the pub itself.

Granted, there are probably some youths who are gay. I cannot see the problem in it, as long as a gay pub doesn't become a total no-go zone for any fights and abuse which, from experience, is not the case. I would welcome a gay pub to the town.

I used to run a nightclub, who's clientelle were predominently of direct african or west indian origin. We did not call it a black nightclub or discourage caucasian customers by doing so. One of my ex girlfriends was black, another bi-sexual. Nither wanted to be separated from the rest of the world for being so. Those who bandy about words like "homophobic" to describe a lack of segregation, might wish to be careful that it is not their own attitude causing predudice. I do not expect to have a "white hetero only" pub, just because of an accident of birth and certainly many of my gay friends would not use a pub which singled them out on the basis of their sexuality, rather than allowing a range of aquaintances. Does rgs rick wish to exclude me from this place, for being straight? Unless the pub is to be purely used as a pick up joint, the sexuality of it's clients is irrelevent.

I don't think it is unreasonable for rgs_rick to muse on the benefits/validity of an openly 'gay constitution' bar/club in Hertford. To me, Lombard House would be an ideal proving ground. I've never been to San Francisco but I can imagine the mist rolling in and romantically vignetteing the Old Barge. I'd be putty in anybody's hands

Do people think, "I know what, I will open a Gay Bar" How do people know it is going to be a Gay Bar before it opens? Do they put big signs up saying "GAY BAR"? Was the Admiral Nelson in Soho opened initially as a Gay Bar or did it come out after a few years? Surely bars become frequented by different types of people as they years go on?

Rick, I hope I speak for many when I say you don't need your gay bar. I'm sure that most would welcome your company in any one of a number of Hertford venues. I accept that there are a few with their own prejudices too, on many subjects, including homosexuality. People can latch on to the way another person is "different", but in reality, we all are. That's life! Good luck mate.

The Fact that The Admiral Duncan is in the gay part of London (Old compton st.) and is painted pink/purple, I think that kinda gives the game away that it is in fact, and has always been, and probably always will be a gay bar.

Yes Azza but the point that Victor is making is that this was not opened as a Gay Bar and has been there for Donkey's years. That area of London has not always been a gay area. I hope I am not being presumptious Victor, but the point is that you should not open a drinking establishment and stigmatise it from the outset as specifically for one set of people, whatever their gender, race or life preference.

Eggs Zackily! In the 60's did they open up Mod bars and Rocker Bars? or did Mods and Rockers just frequent a pub which made it either a Mod Pub or a Rocker Pub? If anything the posts made by Rick are discriminatory to anyone that is not Homosexual. Rick seems to label anyone drinking in Hertford that is not a homosexual a Chav, is that not discriminative? Just out of interest, how would the World react if I said I wanted to open a Heterosexual Bar?

Remember the Prince of Wales in Hertingfordbury used to be a gay pub? (Admin, it counts as Hertford becausde it's only 15 minutes stroll up the Cole Green Way from the football club). Then it stopped being gay and was rebranded by new management as family friendly (not that I'm suggesting the two are mutually exclusive [:)][;)] ) This troubled establishment has now changed hands three times in the last couple of months. The new managers, who have been there for less than a fortnight, are, I think, gay (I might be wrong [:I]) and whilst this doesn't necessarily mean it will be a 'gay' pub, I am sure it will be very gay friendly and I thought rgs_rick might like to know about it. [:)] Whether it's gay or not, it's still dingy, dirty and usually empty so I hope that the new managers will turn the place around where so many others have tried and failed. I have to say I just can't understand what the owner is trying to do with this pub. Is he just planning to run it into the ground to get change of use planning permish so he can sell it off for residential use? It could be a little goldmine as a well-run gastropub/B&B... let's hope the new managers make big improvements.

What a load of angst and hissy fitting. I couldn't care less what colour, race, religion, political affiliation, sexual orientation, shoe size, weight or ambidextrous ability anyone has, so long as when in ANY pub they are not insisting on forcing the aforementioned on me or anyone else. Likewise I have never been aware of any pub that has made people feel unwelcome...over-dressed maybe, but never unwelcome. Meanwhile, can we have a pub for people with 2 left feet who can only wear flip flips please?

You should read the thread Defoe Boy! Its worth it. Basically, If you don't agree with Rick, there is something wrong with you (in his eyes).

Berb, if you want a flavour, here are some of Ricks fantastic unprovoked comments! "Hertford is the most homophobic town in England" "Hertford is a awful town now run by chavs" "you narrow minded people in this forum and topic" And you have to admire his conviction to walk away.... "One very final word on this topic" "One final thing about gay pub in Hertford" "The very very last point im making on this topic" "Very last on this now boring topic I promise" and here's my favourite quote from the man who who slags us and Hertord off! "I do not eat ,drink ,socialise in this town what so ever" You will also notice that when asked to provide a quote concerning what he accuses others of saying, he doesn't provide a single one. Its all in his head. He's simply an attention seeker. But he's gone now!!!!!!!!........again.

Err.. What?? The question of why this town has not got a gay bar has been answered time and time again - you unfortunately seem too blinkered to understand it Rick. The Hertford townsfolk are NOT homophobic but by Christ you're having a good go at making it that way with your continued rants. We just don't need drinking establishments with labels, just good atmosphere, well kept beer and where all are welcomed irrespective of their sexual preferences, creed or colour. Please Admin, lock this topic down - its become repetitious and tiresome.

There is not one post here that says that. You were asked to quote an example before and you've not responded.

Yes is has, on several occasions.

Example? Of course, I don't expect a response, given that you've been invited to substantiate your allegations before and always chosen not to do so.

just like to tell you lot ,they is now a gay friendly bar in the Hertford area ,run by gay people, its not fair to say were it is,as im sure some of you lot ,will come to see the"freak show" (not my words) but the way some people look at it.Its very nice bar ,better then all the pubs in Hertford put together with exception of the Snug Bar(non smoking) the Woolpack and the Old Cross Tavern, as from my very first message on here, that as now been answered, very end of story.

I am not going to re-read the rest of the pages on this topic but from taking part in this discussion I do not recall the phrase 'freak show' being used. For someone who based their entire argument upon a suggested intolerance of the gay community by, as you called it, homophobic Hertford, you demonstrate a startling lack of understanding and tollerance. You may have received responses to your posts that you were not happy with but this is probably caused by the paranoid tone of your posts and your rampant stereotyping. The phrase 'freak show' may not be your words but it certainly is on this forum. How dare you have the audacity to imply that someone else here has posted such a comment. I don't care whether or not there is a gay pub in or around Hertford. If it is good pub then great. However, may I suggest that the only freakish thing in the entire establishment will be the size of the chip on your shoulder.

at last an end may be in sight i hope rick will be very happy in his new little haven where ever it may be and im sure that everyone that drinks in this new mystery bar cant wait to see or hear your opinion of hertford and its drinking public by all means print of the pages from this site and show your new found freinds just what has been said and how you nearly put the back up of all here on the forum please do because i have shown alot of my freinds and thay cant belieive some of the things you have said and how you can only respond to a topic that you twist and bend to fit your opinion and then throw it back on here in the begining i was on your side and would defend you but you just kept spouting more and more rubbish im glad you have a place that you feel is what you want but just remember you are welcome in any licenced premises and that the day a landlord of a pub is against you for your sexual prefrence then come and see me but as im sure that day will never come as all the licencees i have met and that i know in this town are very proffesional and members of there community to the hilt that day will not come rick i hope you and your partner are very happy in your new drinking hole and that your pint never be warm god bless and goodbye

My guess would be probably not. I think I know the pub to which Rick refers. Blithe it is not. In fact in my experience and that of a gay friend (by both meanings) who is female, it can be one of Hertford's most judgemental bar communities. Should suit anyone who believes that one who is not a male homosexual is automatically homophobic.

This is true but one pub in particular is more homo-friendly and well known on the "rainbow network". In any case its not actually in the town centre and its not strictly speaking a dedicated pub. Most locals can work out where it is.... I'll add i'm not gay and dont drink there but its pretty obvious where it is if youve been in there on one nights where a lot of gay people are in there.. edited to add that I did a quick google for the place and it is actually being activly marketed as a gay pub on a friday night. Glad youve found a place to drink and feel at ease anyway Rick.

Why for the love of god are we still speaking about this after all this time! Its quite simple really! If you care about the sexuality of other people in the pub you frequent ask them, most "openly" homosexual people will by definition be "open" If you don't care whats the problem?? BTW im not gay, I just dont care who is and who isnt, or where they drink or dont drink and i am certainly in NO WAY alligning myself with the starter of this thread, In my opinion the man/woman clearly "has issues"

Not the one I'm thinking of then. Love the term "rainbow network" even if I don't see how it relates to gays. Never have really worked out the jargon. I don't think pubs are either gay, or not gay. Anyway, I don't walk in to a pub announcing my own sexuality as I cross the threshold and I don't see why anyone should feel the need to.

I came across the term "rainbow network" when I did a google for the pub. I presume it refers to the rainbow sign which many pubs have in their windows or sign to signify they are a "gay" pub or not. I thought I would sling it into my post to make me sound all street and up to date with all the new lingo.

The new managers, who have been there for less than a fortnight, are, I think, gay (I might be wrong [:I]) and whilst this doesn't necessarily mean it will be a 'gay' pub, I am sure it will be very gay friendly and I hope they will turn the place around where so
See, Admin, that's the problem with letting threads get very long and boring and full of comments and opinions that are nothing to do with Hertford - no-one can be arsed to wade through the pages to read the few posts that are actually germaine to our community. I posted the above, which gives the identity of the local gay-friendly pub, back in August and here's a link to a more recent customer review http://rainbownetwork.com/topics/detail.asp?iData=72494&iCat=151&iChannel=9&nChannel=Topics I haven't been in for weeks to see how the place has improved under the new management but I've heard favourable comments from a (straight) friend who is a regular.

If you put gay pub hertford into google, the first thing that comes up links you to something being organised by someone called Richard S (shamieuk) who also put the review on the above link posted by Rachel. Obvious really. Rick clearly has found a great place to drink where he feels comfortable. Let's close this thread now and forget about it.
