The answer? Nothing. No cinema, No real shops, No real entertainment, Nothing unique to Hertford. Whilst i am not against travel, This town needs to be subject to serious changes. There is nothing for people of any age. Any ideas of what could put hertford on the map? Please reply. Expess yourself!

Now, Tristan - I think you haven't been looking properly! We have beautiful countryside, parks and rivers. We have more than enough pubs to do a variety of decent pub crawls. Restaurants and cafes of most descriptions (including some pretty impressive non-chain ones). Drama and bands virtually every week (check the Mercury). Sports facilities and teams of all levels. Clubs ranging from geology to the Women's Institute..... I could go on. As for something unique to Hertford - how about a real working set of wooden stocks and a supply of rotten tomatoes? Then we can frighten all those yobs who visit from less "interesting" places into behaving themselves. If you check the local rag you will see that 95% of the fights and vandalism reported are carried out by people from places like Cheshunt, Enfield and Stevenage who just can't keep away. We must have something...

I shouldn't recommend pub crawls to those under 18s. But I do think your reply highlights that there is little for youngsters to do here. no skatepark , bowling alley, ice rink, cinema etc. I'm not sure its the height of cool for a teenager to join the geology club or the WI. I know Tristan does visit Hertford Town but thats a couple of hours in a week. We shouldn't moan at the kids hanging around the town centre as we give them b****r all else to do.

Well - obviously I didn't know that Tristan was under 18 else I wouldn't have mentioned the pubs - and the Geology and WI were just examples of the diverse clubs you can find around here. How about different sports or fantasy role playing games, volunteering, taking up an NEW hobby? There is loads to do if you really want to get out every night. I can't see why people think that a cinema is the answer to every young person's boredom. How many nights a week can you afford to go to the cinema? Now - a skatepark - that, I can see a point in. It's cheap to build, good exercise and hits that certain age of youth when you are in between wanting to attend organised groups and not old enough for socialising in pubs and cafes. However, what percentage of that age group are interested in skateboarding? You might entertain some of them, but not all - what about the girls?

Hey Justin - how about the Hillside having a night for young people only - soft drinks, bar snacks etc? Perhaps they'll let you have a go on a skateboard....

Heard last night that 'Beyonce' has actually turned out to be Roy Castle's love-child - she is said to be pleased by the news but has decided not to take his surname.

I think your suggestions miss the point of what teenagers want. I would like to point out that this is not personal memories (I am too old to remember what I wanted as a teenager) but more watching my children and their friends. But every person is different and wants different things. The plus points about the type of venues I mentioned as lacking in Hertford is that there is little organisation required to participate and in most cases not too expensive. There isn't a "learning experience" involved in visiting these places. Many teenages have done their learning at school and need the equivalent of the pub - somewhere to wind down. I agree a cinema isn't the answer but then no one venue is the answer. Hertford may not be big enough to support a Stevenage style leisure park but ignoring the bad points of this area, it does give the people of Stevenage somewhere to hang out with their mates and importantly a choice of activities. As Hertford grows I do hope that the planners take this on board and include leisure facilities for all ages in their plans. I do accept that I am a 40 odd year old trying to pontificate on what teenagers want - perhaps Tristan or someone else could make some suggestions

Skate parks are a good idea but there are so many (male + females) who would want to use it, if one was built it would have to be the size of Hartham! I personally do enjoy going to see Hertford play on sautrdays, perhaps more so than going to a skatepark, but there are many who dont. However there are other alternatives, for example i am going to see alf garnett at castle hall, which should be a laugh, & previously i beared witness to a chas 'n Dave concert.
In many ways i am in agreement with david, somewhere to unwind would be the best option, that would cater for most, if not all tastes. But when i started this thread i was not just refering to lack of entertainment for youngsters, but adults to. Despite pubs, what is there for the older generation? Expess yourself!

I know this is quite an old topic.... but what about the Marquee? I would have said was good for people under 18.

I grew up in Hertford and always had a problem with being able to do things like going to see the latest film (cinema)or going bowling, going to the places my friends blah blah blah went because my mum didn't drive at the time and many of these places are nowhere near a train station. I'm not saying that Hertford should get these places but I think people forget that not everyone drives or can ferry their children about so the young people who want to stay safe either have to try and go somewhere that is right next to the station or stay in Hertford. As we have said taxis are also extortionate so they are quite limited. Difficult subject I guess! [?][:)]
