Vegetarian

Over the last year I have visited Dublin, Edinburgh and Exeter all of whom have some really good vegetarian restaurants. I wish someone in this area would open one. I know there is the Sunflowers in Ware but an evening venue would be great and I am sure very popular in Hertford. Yes I know you can get good "veggie" food in some places but to go to a restaurant and be able to order anything on the menu is great. I am not vegetarian but I have two daughters who are!

I would expect that a purely vegetarian restaurant would struggle. I'm not familiar with Sunflowers so I can comment on the robustness of their business, but I think it would be a foolish restauranteur who excluded meat eaters from his or her establishment. Vegetarians are well catered for given the proportion of the population that they represent and I see no reason for there to be 'exclusive' eateries.

As a vegetarian I used, many years ago, to visit vegetarian restaurants and was generally disappointed by their menus and standards. In more recent years the choice of reasonable vegetarian food in restaurants has grown and the need for such places has diminished. It is good to be able to order anything off the menu but that menu is so often lacklustre or dull except in some cuisines where vegetarian is the norm (e.g. in some of the good South Indian restaurants in major cities). My feeling is that quite a number of vegetarian restaurants feel that being just that is more important than being a good restaurant irrespective of the food served

I agree, my other half is a vegetarian, but avoids vegetarian restaurants deliberately as they're rarely any good, and have any imagination beyond mushroom risotto! It wouldnt work in hertford... you'd be better off lobbying existing restaurants for better options..

Agreed! I am vegetarian and I have never had a good meal in a purely vegetarian resturant....they tend to try too hard on the vegan front and omit eggs/cheese and milk and then cater for other diets as well such as non carbohydrates, then what is left to eat? salad? As well as that my otherhalf eats anything that ever had a pulse (my polar opposite). I would recommend the Hillside, although usually only one or two options they change regularly enough and are always yummy!!!! or the Bhan Thai (excuse spelling) down Fore Street caters well for veggies as well!

My daughters' arguments are over food preparation. Yes the Thai restaurant do have good "vegetarian" food but do they use fish oil? Is the food prepared near meat or fish? I am surprised that the vegetarian amongst you have not been to good restaurants. Anyway I can see there is no interest!! I will try the Hillside some time - it's a shame there are so many "franchise" restaurants in the town and not many independent ones.
