I have just had a leaflet drop through my door from a company called Clothing Ltd REG No 5482825 .... email [email protected]. They say they are collecting clothes for the Third World and could we leave our clothes out for collection BEFORE 8am on FRIDAY? .. I'm a little suspicious of this, so I wondered if any member of the police could check if this is Bona Fidae, as I'd hate to give clothes to a non-reputable organisation.

Dear Azzza Having checked the Charity Commission website there is no such charity either in name or number. It is also unusual for a small(Supposed)charity to also register as a limited company (As in this case) as it tends to be the larger charities that register as a limited company. e.g Marie Curie Cancer Care who also have a trading arm. Although I am not a police officer my job is to advise charities and this does not sound like a legitimate organisation - I would bin the leaflet. The Reg number (if it were the company reg number not charity one) comes up with a company called Pajurys Ltd in MK. Incorporated 16/6/05, so pretty new. This leaflet certainly smells.

I have had a similar leaflet claiming to be from Pajurys Ltd but with the same company registration number (and the same email address). Clearly a company registration number cannot belong to two different companies so I have reported this matter to Companies House, to the Trading Standards Office and to Hemel Hempstead Police. It would seem clear that no-one should donate anything to this company.

I had yet another one of these leaflets through the door today... this time from a 'company' called 'LAIRATEX Ltd'reg no. 5698510 phone number 07786 712016 ... they are planning on collecting on WEDNESDAY between 9am-6pm... they cheekily say they will accept jewellery and mobile phones!.... the people who delivered this looked wholly undesirable. If anyone from the Mercury is reading this, I suggest you hangout around Townsend St, Villiers st and Currie street to try and scoop an interview with these people!.. if not, the public need to be made aware of these dodgey operations

Watchdog have featured a company that collects clothes for 'the third world' but actually sell the clothes in Eastern Europe (not for charity), so there certainly are dodgy companies out there. I would recommend that anyone thinking of donating clothes and unwanted goods contacts the British Heart Foundation, they will collect items from your door (you don't have to wait for the big collections they do), and you will be assured that the money is going to a good cause.

This needs wider publicity than the forum to ensure the charitable of Hertford who receive these leaflets do not have their good will abused.

Worth remembering that any organisation that: a) Trades only from a mobile phone number (as above) is probably dodgy b) Wants to collect goods but does not even give you anything in which to put those goods is dodgy Has anyone rung the number to see what sort of customer service they give?

Even with "legitimate" charities, it is worth checking who is collecting for them and what commission they get, how much of your donation is likely to reach it's implied destination and whether the organisation uses it's activities for evangelistic religious propaganda, which may, or may not match your own opinions. I have also noticed these cards and yes, they are a scam, but one I got was carefully worded with ambiguous phases like "for distribution to poorer nations" and in small print, "not a registered charity". They may not be prosecutable.

A few years ago when the BBC Programme "That's Life" was still on, they highlighted a scam in Croydon of so called charitable collections of clothing that did not benefit the third world or poorer nations, the clothes were being sold off!!!!!! I only ever take my clothes to either the recycling clothes bins or to the Oxfam/Isabel Hospice shops in person, difficult but worth getting it to the heart of things. I just recycled the flyers from this fictitious lot!!!

The is clothing scam is becoming wide spread. Only give to charities you know!
