Hi there - I'm looking to move to Hertford soon and am interested in finding various sports facilities... Does anyone know if there is a wakeboarding club nearish by? I'm looking for one that enables tows behind a boat not a cable. Alternatively is there some water that allows private boats + wakeboard/waterski?...there seem to be many blobs of blue on my map that look promising?!

Well I can't say I've ever heard of wakeboarding and I'm not aware of any blue blobs. We've only got the river and narrowboats. Have you visited the town? And what draws you here?

Perhaps Sparks means the Lea Valley, plenty of water down there. Sparks........on Hertford's waterways you'll probably find canoeists, ducks and possibly Rosie and Jim. I guess you will have to travel a bit further afield for wakeboarding....... Thanks for the responses - and the website links of course Blue blobs are indeed mainly the Lea Valley area. May try my luck with the ducks in a canoe at some stage if all else fails. To answer Steve, yes - have spent many a weekend day wandering the streets of Hertford and decided it's the place to be. Finally decided to escape London (though working there still)and have family up north so Hertfordshire/ North Bucks made sense. Hertford beat Gerrards Cross/ Amersham/ Chesham/Chalfonts/Berkhamsted etc etc as the place to settle for a while. This forum has helped - have both enjoyed and found it useful; wit appears to be alive and kicking despite the best efforts of the train companies etc!

Thanks Sparks. We are seeing alot of people moving into Hertford from London and I'm always interested to know so many are doing so. Could you be more specific about the characteristics of the town that you find attractive, and what you're keen to leave behind in London!

Similar for us Sparks. Moved from London but still work there. The commute isn't too bad and definately worth it to live in a great town.

Hertford has a good feel to it. The people we've met have been down to earth and pleasant. It has different styles of area which makes it interesting and it's large enough that it won't be such a shock after London; though compact enough that you can walk/ cycle everywhere. There seem to be good local amenities - enough pubs/ restaurants for a varied social life (we've tried Lussmans, Baroush, Barge, Snug and the Woolpack so far), the supermarkets are big enough (having a Waitrose appeals to my snobbier side) and the common (noted Steve!) in the middle (tennis courts/ swimming pool/ gym) plus rivers look like they give an appealing centre to activities. Then there's the surrounding countryside and woods (plenty of walks/ cycle rides?), easy links to get up north (important for my regular pilgrimage to the KC Stadium!), a Ryman league football team (yes total sucker for the game), a lack of litter, historic connections, and the two different train lines the start in Hertford and terminate 5 mins from our workplaces. The houses are affordable and the schools seem decent should a family develop! So apart from a lack of wakeboarding lake close by, and the lack of a cinema (train ride to Stevenage?) it's all looking rosy at the moment (please don't shatter my illusions just yet!). I like London very much and have had a great 16 years here - but I'm at the stage where I'd like life to revolve more around a home and a home town - it's hard in London to separate business life, which I do enjoy, from a home life - just doing things like arranging a game of tennis then getting to the court on time seem to be a big effort. I could also do without the daily scrum to get on the train plus the litter is starting to get to me. So..house hunting contines tomorrow in Hertford!

Back to odd watery thing - don't know but it could be worth trying Stanbrogh Lakes in WGC - they do funny things in Wetsuits and stuff! Apologies for the rubbish spelling - it is early on a Saturday morning. Back to bed me thinks [|)]

Steve - 'park' duly edited - lovely to find a fellow pedant ;) Thanks Ewoowar - unfortunately unsuccessful last weekend - 'in need of modernisation' being something of an understatement! Tigger - appreciate the early morning input - wetsuits and water sounds just the job - I'm going to have to go there to investigate I think tho' because googling on any version of Stanbrogh/brough/borough I can think of seems to bring up only a) fishing references (extreme fishing in wetsuits?) and b) a fleeting reference to some rather dubious night time activity best left off this site I suspect! Still..if we've solved the wakeboarding problem, I now just need to solve the house problem..so if you see any 3 bed houses lying around for under £300K let me know!!

Brilliant! Clearly must improve googling skills! Most of the sport seems to be unpowered (which I do admit is the much more environmentally friendly way to enjoy the water but there's nothing quite like zipping across the water on a board!) but they do appear to do 'power boat' courses which means that they might be amenable to wakeboarders. Will call! Thanks for tip re: Mercury - will get one tomorrow!
