Parish Boundaries
I noticed on my recently arrived, hiked up council tax bill, that our address (in Bengeo) is under Hertford Town Parish. If it were under Bengeo Parish it would be substantially cheaper.
I queried this with Herts CC who snootily told me that no mistake had been made.
Is there any way to check which addresses are within which parishes?
Thanks..[:(!]

As far as the electoral roll goes Folly Island is within Bengeo. As for anything else it is definetely town centre. I don't understand it either.

At HCC I have a map which shows the parish boundaries but I can not see this on the public website, or on the Hertford Town Council website. I would suggest you telephone Hertford Town Council to confirm where their boundaries are; contact details are on the Hertford Town Council website http://www.hertford.gov.uk
I have just had a look on the parish map, and it does show that Bengeo Rural starts beyond what I know as Bengeo on the B158 just before you get to Rickneys Quarry, running north.
I can't explain the Folly Island business, as my map shows it to be in Hertford Town..

Bengeo rural parish council covers a rural area north of Hertford and has no real geographical connection with Bengeo. I believe the name derives from the fact that the Bengeo eclesicatical parish covered areas such as Tonwell and Chapmore End. In the early days of local government in the late 19th century eclesiatical and civil parishes were very closely linked. This is no longer the case, the civil parishes being groupings of wards. So Bengeo itself is within one of the Hertford wards which is sensible as it is part of Hertford town. The higher tax reflects the services that Hertford town council provides that could not be provided in a rural area.
